    Gauge coupling Unification and SO(10) in 5D

    We analyze the gauge unification in minimal supersymmetric SO(10) grand unified theories in 5 dimensions. The single extra spatial dimension is compactified on the orbifold S^1/(Z_2 x Z_2') reducing the gauge group to that of Pati-Salam SU(4)_c x SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R. The Standard Model gauge group is achieved by the further brane-localized Higgs mechanism on one of the fixed points. There are two main different approaches developed in literature. Higgs mechanism can take place on the Pati Salam brane, or on the SO(10) preserving brane. We show, both analytically and numerically, that in the first case a natural and succesfull gauge coupling unification can be achieved, while the second case is highly disfavoured. For completeness, we consider either the case in which the brane breaking scale is near the cutoff scale or the case in which it is lower than the compactification scale.Comment: 18 Pages and 8 PostScript Figure

    Fermion masses and proton decay in a minimal five-dimensional SO(10) model

    We propose a minimal SO(10) model in 5 space-time dimensions. The single extra spatial dimension is compactified on the orbifold S^1/(Z_2 x Z_2') reducing the gauge group to that of Pati-Salam. The breaking down to the standard model group is obtained through an ordinary Higgs mechanism taking place at the Pati-Salam brane, giving rise to a proper gauge coupling unification. We achieve a correct description of fermion masses and mixing angles by describing first and second generations as bulk fields, and by embedding the third generation into four multiplets located at the Pati-Salam brane. The Yukawa sector is simple and compact and predicts a neutrino spectrum of normal hierarchy type. Concerning proton decay, dimension five operators are absent and the essentially unique localization of matter multiplets implies that the minimal couplings between the super-heavy gauge bosons and matter fields are vanishing. Non-minimal interactions are allowed but the resulting dimension six operators describing proton decay are too suppressed to produce observable effects, even in future, super-massive detectors.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figure

    Scaling Behavior of Anomalous Hall Effect and Longitudinal Nonlinear Response in High-Tc Superconductors

    Based on existing theoretical model and by considering our longitudinal nonlinear response function, we derive a nonliear equation in which the mixed state Hall resistivity can be expressed as an analytical function of magnetic field, temperature and applied current. This equation enables one to compare quantitatively the experimental data with theoretical model. We also find some new scaling relations of the temperature and field dependency of Hall resistivity. The comparison between our theoretical curves and experimental data shows a fair agreement.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Instability, Intermixing and Electronic Structure at the Epitaxial LaAlO3/SrTiO3(001) Heterojunction

    The question of stability against diffusional mixing at the prototypical LaAlO3/SrTiO3(001) interface is explored using a multi-faceted experimental and theoretical approach. We combine analytical methods with a range of sensitivities to elemental concentrations and spatial separations to investigate interfaces grown using on-axis pulsed laser deposition. We also employ computational modeling based on the density function theory as well as classical force fields to explore the energetic stability of a wide variety of intermixed atomic configurations relative to the idealized, atomically abrupt model. Statistical analysis of the calculated energies for the various configurations is used to elucidate the relative thermodynamic stability of intermixed and abrupt configurations. We find that on both experimental and theoretical fronts, the tendency toward intermixing is very strong. We have also measured and calculated key electronic properties such as the presence of electric fields and the value of the valence band discontinuity at the interface. We find no measurable electric field in either the LaAlO3 or SrTiO3, and that the valence band offset is near zero, partitioning the band discontinuity almost entirely to the conduction band edge. Moreover, we find that it is not possible to account for these electronic properties theoretically without including extensive intermixing in our physical model of the interface. The atomic configurations which give the greatest electrostatic stability are those that eliminate the interface dipole by intermixing, calling into question the conventional explanation for conductivity at this interface - electronic reconstruction. Rather, evidence is presented for La indiffusion and doping of the SrTiO3 below the interface as being the cause of the observed conductivity

    High expression of cell adhesion molecule 2 unfavorably impacts survival in non-small cell lung cancer patients with brain metastases

    Background: Lung cancer is one kind of malignant tumor with a high risk for morbidity and mortality compared to other solid organ malignancies. Brain metastases occur in 30-55% of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Prognosis of NSCLC patients with brain metastases is very poor. Our previous study showed that cell adhesion molecule 2 (CADM2) could regulate the development of brain metastasis in NSCLC cells. Therefore, the objective of the study is to evaluate the effect of CADM2 on the prognosis of NSCLC patients with brain metastases.Methods: The expression of CADM2 was detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) in the tissue of the primary tumor. Patients were followed up and overall survival (OS) was calculated. The relationships between CADM2 and clinicopathological features were analyzed using the chi-square test. Kaplan-Meier analysis was carried out to demonstrate the influence of CADM2 on the OS of patients. Univariate and multivariate Cox analyses were used to determine the prognosis of NSCLC patients with brain metastases.Results: A total of 139 NSCLC patients with brain metastases from the Affiliated Cancer Hospital & Institute of Guangzhou Medical University, treated between January 2015 and December 2017 were evaluated retrospectively. The expression level of CADM2 in patients ranged from 1 to 17.2677, with a median of 6.0772. Chi-square analysis showed that CADM2 gene expression level was not significantly associated with gender, age, tumor location, histological subtype, tumor T stage, extracranial metastasis, or smoking status. However, CADM2 expression was notably associated with risk for lymph node metastasis. The results of the Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that high expression [CADM2 messenger RNA (mRNA) >= 6.0772] of CADM2 was markedly associated with poor prognosis. Univariate and multivariate Cox analyses demonstrated that CADM2 was an independent risk factor for survival in NSCLC patients with brain metastases (P<0.05).Conclusions: CADM2 expression is up-regulated and closely associated with disease progression and poor prognosis in NSCLC patients with brain metastases. CADM2 expression warrants special consideration given its potential prognostic significance that might help inform clinical decision making.Pathogenesis and treatment of chronic pulmonary disease

    The attenuation of central angiotensin II-dependent pressor response and intra-neuronal signaling by intracarotid injection of nanoformulated copper/zinc superoxide dismutase

    Adenoviral-mediated overexpression of the intracellular superoxide (O2·-) scavenging enzyme copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) in the brain attenuates central angiotensin II (AngII)-induced cardiovascular responses. However, the therapeutic potential for adenoviral vectors is weakened by toxicity and the inability of adenoviral vectors to target the brain following peripheral administration. Therefore, we developed a non-viral delivery system in which CuZnSOD protein is electrostatically bound to a synthetic poly(ethyleneimine)-poly(ethyleneglycol) (PEI-PEG) polymer to form a polyion complex (CuZnSOD nanozyme). We hypothesized that PEI-PEG polymer increases transport of functional CuZnSOD to neurons, which inhibits AngII intra-neuronal signaling. The AngII-induced increase in O2·-, as measured by dihydroethidium fluorescence and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, was significantly inhibited in CuZnSOD nanozyme-treated neurons compared to free CuZnSOD- and non-treated neurons. CuZnSOD nanozyme also attenuated the AngII-induced inhibition of K+ current in neurons. Intracarotid injection of CuZnSOD nanozyme into rabbits significantly inhibited the pressor response of intracerebroventricular-delivered AngII; however, intracarotid injection of free CuZnSOD or PEI-PEG polymer alone failed to inhibit this response. Importantly, neither the PEI-PEG polymer alone nor the CuZnSOD nanozyme induced neuronal toxicity. These findings indicate that CuZnSOD nanozyme inhibits AngII intra-neuronal signaling in vitro and in vivo

    Os sistemas agroflorestais (SAFs) representam uma alternativa agroecológica de produção, sob regime sustentável, para os agricultores familiares na várzea dos Rios Solimões/Amazonas, principalmente no que se refere ao manejo florestal, à diversidade de produtos e à geração de renda. Diante disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi compreender as diferentes formas de apropriação e de manejo dos recursos naturais através dos SAFs, nos subsistemas roça, sítio e lagos, como componente para a sustentabilidade dos agricultores familiares da localidade Costa da Terra Nova, município do Careiro da Várzea, Amazonas. O método empregado foi o Estudo de Caso com aplicação de questionários, entrevistas e observação participante. A produção familiar na Costa da Terra Nova é representada pelos SAFs, constituído pelos os subsistemas: roça quintal e lago, que proporcionam produtos tanto para subsistência quanto para comercialização local, e estabelecendo a agricultura como fundamental atividade na localidade. O principal produto para comercialização é obtido das hortaliças cultivadas na época da vazante no subsistema roça nas comunidades São Francisco e Nossa Senhora da Conceição; e do extrativismo pesqueiro no subsistema lago, na época da cheia, principalmente na comunidade São José. A criação de animal se dá no subsistema sítio e é apenas para subsistência, sendo as aves e os suínos os principais animais domésticos criados nas três comunidades. Portanto os SAFs tradicionais, constituídos pelos subsistemas, roça, sitio e lago, são responsáveis pela sustentabilidade socioeconômica da localidade pesquisada, servindo, como alternativa agrícola melhor adaptada às condições locais das áreas de várzea na Amazônia

    Search for single top quarks in the tau+jets channel using 4.8 fb1^{-1} of ppˉp\bar{p} collision data

    We present the first direct search for single top quark production using tau leptons. The search is based on 4.8 fb1^{-1} of integrated luminosity collected in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at s\sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with a final state including an isolated tau lepton, missing transverse energy, two or three jets, one or two of them bb tagged. We use a multivariate technique to discriminate signal from background. The number of events observed in data in this final state is consistent with the signal plus background expectation. We set in the tau+jets channel an upper limit on the single top quark cross section of \TauLimObs pb at the 95% C.L. This measurement allows a gain of 4% in expected sensitivity for the observation of single top production when combining it with electron+jets and muon+jets channels already published by the D0 collaboration with 2.3 fb1^{-1} of data. We measure a combined cross section of \SuperCombineXSall pb, which is the most precise measurement to date.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

    Search for pair production of the scalar top quark in the electron-muon final state

    We report the result of a search for the pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark (t~1\tilde{t}_1) in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb1^{-1}. The scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a bb quark, a charged lepton, and a scalar neutrino (ν~\tilde{\nu}), and the search is performed in the electron plus muon final state. No significant excess of events above the standard model prediction is detected, and improved exclusion limits at the 95% C.L. are set in the the (Mt~1M_{\tilde{t}_1},Mν~M_{\tilde{\nu}}) mass plane
