As public computer networks are becoming more and more popular, their use is shifting from sciencedominated use to commercial use. When considering rapidly growing inhomogeneous and geographically highly decentralized networks, security is of particular importance. The Internet with mobile users accessing the network through cellular phones, pagers, notebook computers or other kind of hand-held computing devices is the most famous example of such a highly vulnerable environment. In this paper we present an open architecture for distributed services for such a network which allows service providers to easily and securely install their electronic services. We state how mutual trust between a service provider and a, potentially mobile, customer is achieved. Additionally, we describe the accounting and authorization mechanisms which are aimed towards retaining a substantial degree of privacy and untraceability for the customer.
