    Long-term variability of AGN at hard X-rays

    Variability at all observed wavelengths is a distinctive property of AGN. Hard X-rays provide us with a view of the innermost regions of AGN, mostly unbiased by absorption along the line of sight. Swift/BAT offers the unique opportunity to follow, on time scales of days to years and with a regular sampling, the 14-195 keV emission of the largest AGN sample available up to date for this kind of investigation. We study the amplitude of the variations, and their dependence on sub-class and on energy, for a sample of 110 radio quiet and radio loud AGN selected from the BAT 58-month survey. About 80% of the AGN in the sample are found to exhibit significant variability on months to years time scales, radio loud sources being the most variable. The amplitude of the variations and their energy dependence are incompatible with variability being driven at hard X-rays by changes of the absorption column density. In general, the variations in the 14-24 and 35-100 keV bands are well correlated, suggesting a common origin of the variability across the BAT energy band. However, radio quiet AGN display on average 10% larger variations at 14-24 keV than at 35-100 keV and a softer-when-brighter behavior for most of the Seyfert galaxies with detectable spectral variability on month time scale. In addition, sources with harder spectra are found to be more variable than softer ones. These properties are generally consistent with a variable power law continuum, in flux and shape, pivoting at energies >~ 50 keV, to which a constant reflection component is superposed. When the same time scales are considered, the timing properties of AGN at hard X-rays are comparable to those at lower energies, with at least some of the differences possibly ascribable to components contributing differently in the two energy domains (e.g., reflection, absorption).Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    We are proud to announce the re-launch of Hereditary Cancer in Clinical Practice (HCCP). Moving from a classical printed journal, first published in 2003, to the open access, online format of BioMed Central will allow for a quicker and much wider distribution of published articles. Further improving exposure of articles, the journal has also been accepted for indexing by PubMed, and is now on track to receive it's first Impact Factor in 2010 after being accepted for inclusion in Thomson Reuters' Science Citation Index Expanded and the Journal Citation Reports. In addition, the Editorial Board of the journal has been expanded in acknowledgement of the continuing growth of the field of clinical cancer genetics

    Characterization of the c.190T>C missense mutation in BRCA1 codon 64 (Cys64Arg).

    In the Milan area (Northern Italy), we identified a family characterized by a high prevalence of ovarian and breast cancer cases (5 out of 6 subjects, over 3 generations), and a predominant prevalence of ovarian lesions (4 out of 5 patients). Analysis of BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes allowed the identification of the missense c.190T>C mutation in codon 64 (Cys64Arg) of BRCA1. The aims of the present investigation were to characterize the functional implications of the c.190T>C mutation at the molecular level, and to search whether additional polymorphisms might be linked to the peculiar phenotypic features observed in the Italian pedigree. Molecular modelling studies suggested that substitution of the cysteine 64 with an arginine likely disrupts the architecture of the BRCA1 RING finger domain, responsible for the interaction with BARD1, essential for the tumor-suppressor activity of the BRCA1-BARD1 complex. By splicing site information analysis, exonic splicing enhancer site characterization, and analysis of transcript fragment length and sequence, we showed that the c.190T>C mutation was able to modulate the splicing of exon 5 in a fashion opposite to the c.190T>G transversion, responsible for the functionally-related Cys64Gly amino acid substitution. Genotyping of BRCA1 and BRCA2 in the Italian family revealed the presence of two significant polymorphisms: the cancer-associated c.2612C>T SNP in BRCA1, and the c.-26G>A SNP in the BRCA2 gene, acting as an ovarian cancer risk modifier in carriers of deleterious BRCA1 mutations. Analysis of these SNPs in a genotypically-unrelated Polish family, characterized by prevalent breast neoplasms in carriers of the c.190T>C mutation, revealed a genetic profile consistent with the hypothetic role of both polymorphisms

    Long-term Survey and Assessment of Large-River Fishes in Illinois, 2018

    This report presents a summary of those data collected during segment 30 (2018-2019) of the Long-term Survey and Assessment of Large-River Fishes in Illinois (LTEF), an annual survey by members of the Illinois Natural History Survey, with funds administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Sampling for the LTEF program was conducted on: six reaches of the Illinois River Waterway and four segments or pools of the Mississippi River. In all segments of the LTEF program, all fish species collected were accurately identified, tallied, measured, and weighed. The catch rates of sportfish species were calculated as the number of individuals collected per hour (CPUEN ± standard error). Structural indices [Proportional Size Distribution (PSD) and Relative Weight (Wr)] were also calculated for several species of interest to regional managers. Catch rates and species varied among all sampling locations and sampling periods. Gizzard Shad and Emerald Shiners comprised the majority of the individuals caught, and Silver Carp and Common Carp accounted for the greatest proportion of the biomass collected in most sampling areas of the survey. Emerald Shiners and Gizzard Shad comprised the majority of the individuals caught, and Silver Carp and Common Carp accounted for the greatest proportion of the biomass collected in most sampling areas of the survey. The analysis of CPUEN and PSD trends in sportfish populations sampled by the program may indicate inter-annual recruitment patterns in sportfish populations around the state.     52. Development of network of cancer family syndrome registries in eastern Europe

    It has been proven that organizing the registries of families affected by CFS is very helpful in research leading to: 1. Identification of new genes of CFS, 2. Better knowledge of correlations in CFS, 3. Identification of external factors having impact on mutated genes, 4. Description of mutation characteristic for particular populations.Thus, development of CFS registries is very important for increasing pre-clinical and clinical research facilities. Direct positive consequence will also be the improvement of quality of life by better management of patients affected by CFS. Without registries these patients are very often not identified and deprived of appropriate recommendations concerning prophylactics, surveillance and treatment. Development of CFS registries leads also to further improvement of quality of life by progress in management in families with these tumours which can be achieved by better organizing of research on CFS. Better management in CFS families decreases also health-care costs by lowering the number of cancers and increasing the number of tumours detected at their earliest clinical stage when the treatment is less expensive.The scientific objectives of the project include:-elaboration of standards for a model cancer family syndrome registries in Eastern Europe-registration of ∼ 2000 families with different types of CFS in populations of East European countries (Czech, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland)-initiation of European collaborative studies with the use of material collected by East European CFS registries

    A decade of monitoring on Pool 26 of the upper Mississippi River System : water quality and fish data from the Upper Mississippi River Restoration Environmental Management Program

    Abstract: We present information gleaned from 10 years of data collected by the water quality component of the Upper Mississippi River Restoration Environmental Management Program’s Long Term Resource Monitoring Program (LTRMP) from Pool 26 of the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS). The Pool 26 reach of the UMRS includes the confluence with the Illinois River, and the confluence with the Missouri River just downstream of Mel Price Locks and Dam. The surrounding communities in both Illinois and Missouri benefit greatly from the natural resources provided by these rivers. We estimate that annual expenditures are 84and84 and 55 million for fishing and hunting, respectively, in the region surrounding Pool 26 based on license sales and state expenditure data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Additionally, there is a commercial fishery active in Pool 26, recreational boating, and the UMRS provides drinking water for many municipalities in this region. Finally, the Upper Mississippi River System is a major transportation system, and Pool 26 receives the greatest amount of barge traffic for any river reach in the UMRS. The LTRMP began collecting data in 1988, but the first years of the program were experimental. Currently followed monitoring protocols for water quality and fish monitoring were adopted in 1993; however, a major flood event in that year prevented full data collection for that year. Data from the LTRMP water quality component demonstrate that Pool 26 is a highly productive river reach. Long-term averages of chorophyll-a, total phosphorous, total nitrogen, and total inorganic solids are comparable to levels in eutrophic to highly eutrophic lakes. The average current velocity in the main channel of the Mississippi River in Pool 26 ranges from 0.364–0.414 m/sec. during the summer and fall. Even during the lowest discharge levels in a year, the reach has a residence time no longer than 2.7 days. Discharge was significantly related to many water quality parameters, including Secchi depth, turbidity, total suspended solids, total nitrogen, nitrate-nitrite, and total phosphorus. We observed a significant linear increase in mean water temperature in the main channel from 1994 to 2004. When these data were analyzed by season, positive linear trends were found during the spring (0.515°C per year) and fall (0.646°C per year). Continued monitoring is necessary to determine if these observations represent short term fluctuations or long-term trends and to detect any related effects on this river reach.is peer reviewe

    Arterial elasticity imaging: comparison of finite-element analysis models with high-resolution ultrasound speckle tracking

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The nonlinear mechanical properties of internal organs and tissues may be measured with unparalleled precision using ultrasound imaging with phase-sensitive speckle tracking. The many potential applications of this important noninvasive diagnostic approach include measurement of arterial stiffness, which is associated with numerous major disease processes. The accuracy of previous ultrasound measurements of arterial stiffness and vascular elasticity has been limited by the relatively low strain of nonlinear structures under normal physiologic pressure and the measurement assumption that the effect of the surrounding tissue modulus might be ignored in both physiologic and pressure equalized conditions.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This study performed high-resolution ultrasound imaging of the brachial artery in a healthy adult subject under normal physiologic pressure and the use of external pressure (pressure equalization) to increase strain. These ultrasound results were compared to measurements of arterial strain as determined by finite-element analysis models with and without a surrounding tissue, which was represented by homogenous material with fixed elastic modulus.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Use of the pressure equalization technique during imaging resulted in average strain values of 26% and 18% at the top and sides, respectively, compared to 5% and 2%, at the top and sides, respectively, under physiologic pressure. In the artery model that included surrounding tissue, strain was 19% and 16% under pressure equalization versus 9% and 13% at the top and sides, respectively, under physiologic pressure. The model without surrounding tissue had slightly higher levels of strain under physiologic pressure compared to the other model, but the resulting strain values under pressure equalization were > 60% and did not correspond to experimental values.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Since pressure equalization may increase the dynamic range of strain imaging, the effect of the surrounding tissue on strain should be incorporated into models of arterial strain, particularly when the pressure equalization technique is used.</p

    FGF receptor genes and breast cancer susceptibility: results from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium

    Background:Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies in women. Genome-wide association studies have identified FGFR2 as a breast cancer susceptibility gene. Common variation in other fibroblast growth factor (FGF) receptors might also modify risk. We tested this hypothesis by studying genotyped single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and imputed SNPs in FGFR1, FGFR3, FGFR4 and FGFRL1 in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium. Methods:Data were combined from 49 studies, including 53 835 cases and 50 156 controls, of which 89 050 (46 450 cases and 42 600 controls) were of European ancestry, 12 893 (6269 cases and 6624 controls) of Asian and 2048 (1116 cases and 932 controls) of African ancestry. Associations with risk of breast cancer, overall and by disease sub-type, were assessed using unconditional logistic regression. Results:Little evidence of association with breast cancer risk was observed for SNPs in the FGF receptor genes. The strongest evidence in European women was for rs743682 in FGFR3; the estimated per-allele odds ratio was 1.05 (95 confidence interval=1.02-1.09, P=0.0020), which is substantially lower than that observed for SNPs in FGFR2. Conclusion:Our results suggest that common variants in the other FGF receptors are not associated with risk of breast cancer to the degree observed for FGFR2. © 2014 Cancer Research UK

    All-sky LIGO Search for Periodic Gravitational Waves in the Early S5 Data

    We report on an all-sky search with the LIGO detectors for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency range 50--1100 Hz and with the frequency's time derivative in the range -5.0E-9 Hz/s to zero. Data from the first eight months of the fifth LIGO science run (S5) have been used in this search, which is based on a semi-coherent method (PowerFlux) of summing strain power. Observing no evidence of periodic gravitational radiation, we report 95% confidence-level upper limits on radiation emitted by any unknown isolated rotating neutron stars within the search range. Strain limits below 1.E-24 are obtained over a 200-Hz band, and the sensitivity improvement over previous searches increases the spatial volume sampled by an average factor of about 100 over the entire search band. For a neutron star with nominal equatorial ellipticity of 1.0E-6, the search is sensitive to distances as great as 500 pc--a range that could encompass many undiscovered neutron stars, albeit only a tiny fraction of which would likely be rotating fast enough to be accessible to LIGO. This ellipticity is at the upper range thought to be sustainable by conventional neutron stars and well below the maximum sustainable by a strange quark star.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur
