Rehabilitating, repairing and restoring against demolishing, tearing down and destroying: the recovery of the military fort for the Santa Pola town museum

This communication develops the process of interventions of the Renaissance fortress of a new plant built in 1554–57 in Santa Pola. It is one of the earliest examples built with reference to military architecture theoretical treaties (XV–XVI) and best preserved. The study runs its own story from its initial military use, through the use of civil equipment until the final cultural and Museum Center. First, the project of Italian origin is examined and its use as barracks for troops for a duration of three centuries (1557–1850), pointing out the architectural constants of war machinery in a defense position and its origin as a rainwater collector and cistern: a perfect square with two bastions in which a plan of the uprising is preserved (1778). Secondly, we study the changes in the mentioned architecture throughout a century and a half (1850–1990) after its change of ownership (from the state to the municipality), and as a result of the new use as a city hall and public endowment: a market and health and leisure centre, which meant the demolition of defensive elements and the opening up to the outside of the inner parade ground. And thirdly, the new transfer of the municipal offices brings in the beginning of a project of transformations (1990–2015) that retrieves the demolished elements at the same time as it assigns the entire fort for a cultural centre: exhibition, research and history museum, promoting the identity between the citizens and the building which stands in the foundations of their city. The conclusions take us through an interesting route that goes from the approach of defensive tactics, its use as administrative headquarters to the current cultural policy of preservation. In addition, all the known plans of the fort are recovered (of military, civil and cultural use), some unpublished, as well as the project of the North wing that has guided the last operation and which has been set as a pattern of reference

This project interprets and analyzes René Girard's Mimetic Theory, its nuances, concepts and reaching in terms of what the French thinker aims to develop as a fundamental anthropology. The aforementioned analysis is carried out in three moments which I consider essential in R. Girard s thinking and work. First, the one related to the concept of mimetic desire, when the problem about conflicts and interpersonal rivalries is set out as a consequence of the most exacerbated mimesis, as well as the other s role in the subjectivity constitution and development. Second, in the light of the concept of scapegoating, there is an examination of the jump from the mimetic violence of interindividual relationship to the social relationships, where notions as these of mimetic crisis, sacrifice, arbitrary victim, rituals and myths are promoted. Finally, it is developed that what Girard s himself sees as The Gospel and Christ contribution to an anthropological and philosophical knowledge of planetary interest, from which the huge opportunity to shrink ourselves to our own violence is exposed, revealing what is hidden since the foundation of the world.Filósofo (a)Pregrad

Localization of Active Brain Sources From EEG Signals Using Empirical Mode Decomposition: A Comparative Study

The localization of active brain sources from Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a useful method in clinical applications, such as the study of localized epilepsy, evoked-related-potentials, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The distributed-source model is a common method to estimate neural activity in the brain. The location and amplitude of each active source are estimated by solving the inverse problem by regularization or using Bayesian methods with spatio-temporal constraints. Frequency and spatio-temporal constraints improve the quality of the reconstructed neural activity. However, separation into frequency bands is beneficial when the relevant information is in specific sub-bands. We improved frequency-band identification and preserved good temporal resolution using EEG pre-processing techniques with good frequency band separation and temporal resolution properties. The identified frequency bands were included as constraints in the solution of the inverse problem by decomposing the EEG signals into frequency bands through various methods that offer good frequency and temporal resolution, such as empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and wavelet transform (WT). We present a comparative analysis of the accuracy of brain-source reconstruction using these techniques. The accuracy of the spatial reconstruction was assessed using the Wasserstein metric for real and simulated signals. We approached the mode-mixing problem, inherent to EMD, by exploring three variants of EMD: masking EMD, Ensemble-EMD (EEMD), and multivariate EMD (MEMD). The results of the spatio-temporal brain source reconstruction using these techniques show that masking EMD and MEMD can largely mitigate the mode-mixing problem and achieve a good spatio-temporal reconstruction of the active sources. Masking EMD and EEMD achieved better reconstruction than standard EMD, Multiple Sparse Priors, or wavelet packet decomposition when EMD was used as a pre-processing tool for the spatial reconstruction (averaged over time) of the brain sources. The spatial resolution obtained using all three EMD variants was substantially better than the use of EMD alone, as the mode-mixing problem was mitigated, particularly with masking EMD and EEMD. These findings encourage further exploration into the use of EMD-based pre-processing, the mode-mixing problem, and its impact on the accuracy of brain source activity reconstruction

A Sigmoidal Model for the Interpretation of Quantitative PCR (QPCR) Experiments

    Get PDF
Real-time or quantitative PCR (qPCR) is the most commonly used technique for estimating the amount of starting nucleic acids in a PCR or RT-PCR reaction. Quantification of PCR product is achieved in real time by measuring the increase in fluorescence of intercalating dyes, labeled primers or oligonucleotides in the presence of double stranded DNA. This amplification curve follows a sigmoid behavior and is used to estimate the relative and/or absolute amount of template using different methods and assumptions. Estimation of C0 normally requires the measurement of a threshold cycle and some assumption about the efficiency of the reaction. An accurate estimation of efficiency is paramount for a precise determination of template levels at time zero. Several non-linear fitting methods have been implemented to model the sigmoid behavior using different empirical models with varying amounts of parameters; however, interpretation of the corresponding parameters is not straightforward. In this paper a model of PCR amplification is deduced and used in the interpretation of qPCR experiments. A non-linear regression analysis of this equation gives a direct estimation of C0 and automatically calculates a parameter k related to the reaction efficiency. This model takes into account non-idealities in the amplification reaction and avoids a priori assumptions about efficiency

Analytical Modeling and Experimental Validation of NB-IoT Device Energy Consumption

The recent standardization of 3GPP Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) paves the way to support low-power wide-area (LPWA) use cases in cellular networks. NB-IoT design goals are extended coverage, low power and low cost devices, and massive connections. As a new radio access technology, it is necessary to analyze the possibilities NB-IoT provides to support different traffic and coverage needs. In this paper, we propose and validate an NB-IoT energy consumption model. The analytical model is based on a Markov chain. For the validation, an experimental setup is used to measure the energy consumption of two commercial NB-IoT user equipments (UEs) connected to a base station emulator. The evaluation is done considering three test cases. The comparison of the model and measurements is done in terms of the estimated battery lifetime and the latency needed to finish the control plane procedure. The conducted evaluation shows the analytical model performs well, obtaining a maximum relative error of the battery lifetime estimation between the model and the measurements of 21% for an assumed interarrival time (IAT) of 6 min. This work was supported in part by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the European Regional Development Fund under Project TEC2016-76795-C6-4-R and in part by the H2020 European Project TRIANGLE under Grant 688712
