Efectos de la actividad económica sobre el individualismo-colectivismo
Economic reality is an essential element in the life of individuals. Thus, it is relevant to understand the psychological and cultural effects of economic activity. We developed an integrated theory based on an ecocultural perspective, rooted in historical materialism and symbolic interactionism, that shows how certain psychological and cultural dynamics are impacted by economic activity. Specifically, we individually analysed the different stages of economic activity (i.e. production, distribution, and consumption) and how each one promotes individualist-collectivist dynamics. This integrated theory highlights the relevance of analysing macrosocial factors to obtain a more integral understanding of human reality.La realidad económica es un elemento esencial de la vida de las personas por lo que entender cómo nos afecta psicológica y culturalmente es fundamental. Basándonos en la perspectiva ecocultural, enraizada en el materialismo histórico y el interaccionismo simbólico, en este trabajo llevamos a cabo una integración teórica en la que exponemos cómo la activad económica afecta a la realidad cultural y psicológica de las personas. En concreto, nos hemos centrado en analizar separadamente cómo las distintas fases de la actividad económica —producción, distribución y consumo— fomentan diversas dinámicas individualistas-colectivistas. Esta integración teórica pretende subrayar la importancia de analizar los factores macrosociales con el objetivo de conseguir una compresión más integral de la realidad humana
The Multiwavelength Survey By Yale-Chile (MUSYC) Wide K-Band Imaging, Photometric Catalogs, Clustering, And Physical Properties Of Galaxies At Z Similar To 2
We present K-band imaging of two similar to 30' x 30' fields covered by the Multiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile (MUSYC) Wide NIR Survey. The SDSS 1030+05 and Cast 1255 fields were imaged with the Infrared Side Port Imager (ISPI) on the 4 m Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) to a 5 sigma point-source limiting depth of K similar to 20 (Vega). Combining these data with the MUSYC optical UBVRIz imaging, we created multiband K-selected source catalogs for both fields. These catalogs, together with the MUSYC K-band catalog of the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDF-S) field, were used to select K 20 BzK galaxies over an area of 0.71 deg(2). This is the largest area ever surveyed for BzK galaxies. We present number counts, redshift distributions, and stellar masses for our sample of 3261 BzK galaxies (2502 star-forming [sBzK] and 759 passively evolving [pBzK]), as well as reddening and star formation rate estimates for the star-forming BzK systems. We also present two-point angular correlation functions and spatial correlation lengths for both sBzK and pBzK galaxies and show that previous estimates of the correlation function of these galaxies were affected by cosmic variance due to the small areas surveyed. We have measured correlation lengths r(0) of 8.89 +/- 2.03 and 10.82 +/- 1.72 Mpc for sBzK and pBzK galaxies, respectively. This is the first reported measurement of the spatial correlation function of passive BzK galaxies. In the Lambda CDM scenario of galaxy formation, these correlation lengths at z similar to 2 translate into minimum masses of similar to 4 x 10(12) and similar to 9 x 10(12) M(circle dot) for the dark matter halos hosting sBzK and pBzK galaxies, respectively. The clustering properties of the galaxies in our sample are consistent with their being the descendants of bright Lyman break galaxies at z similar to 3, and the progenitors of present-day > 1L* galaxies.Astronom
Changing attitudes toward redistribution: The role of perceived economic inequality in everyday life and intolerance of inequality
Modern societies are characterized by economic inequality. Redistributive policies are one of the means to reduce it. We argue that perceived economic inequality in everyday life and intolerance of it are central factors to enhance positive attitudes toward redistribution. To test it, we conducted a four-wave longitudinal panel study in Chile with a sample of 1221 college students (at T1 – baseline, 960 at T2, 926 at T3, and 787 at T4; Mage = 18.89). As expected, a cross-lagged longitudinal analysis controlled by household income confirmed a positive relationship between perceived economic inequality in everyday life and intolerance of inequality, which in turn was positively associated with support for redistributive policies. These results were stable and consistent over time, supporting the idea that perceived economic inequality in everyday life enhances positive attitudes toward redistribution by increasing intolerance of it. The Multiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile (MUSYC): Deep Near-Infrared Imaging and the Selection of Distant Galaxies
We present deep near-infrared JHK imaging of four 10'x10' fields. The
observations were carried out as part of the Multiwavelength Survey by
Yale-Chile (MUSYC) with ISPI on the CTIO 4m telescope. The typical point source
limiting depths are J~22.5, H~21.5, and K~21 (5sigma; Vega). The effective
seeing in the final images is ~1.0". We combine these data with MUSYC UBVRIz
imaging to create K-selected catalogs that are unique for their uniform size,
depth, filter coverage, and image quality. We investigate the rest-frame
optical colors and photometric redshifts of galaxies that are selected using
common color selection techniques, including distant red galaxies (DRGs),
star-forming and passive BzKs, and the rest-frame UV-selected BM, BX, and Lyman
break galaxies (LBGs). These techniques are effective at isolating large
samples of high redshift galaxies, but none provide complete or uniform samples
across the targeted redshift ranges. The DRG and BM/BX/LBG criteria identify
populations of red and blue galaxies, respectively, as they were designed to
do. The star-forming BzKs have a very wide redshift distribution, a wide range
of colors, and may include galaxies with very low specific star formation
rates. In comparison, the passive BzKs are fewer in number, have a different
distribution of K magnitudes, and have a somewhat different redshift
distribution. By combining these color selection criteria, it appears possible
to define a reasonably complete sample of galaxies to our flux limit over
specific redshift ranges. However, the redshift dependence of both the
completeness and sampled range of rest-frame colors poses an ultimate limit to

A Public, K-Selected, Optical-to-Near-Infrared Catalog of the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS) from the MUltiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile (MUSYC)
We present a new K-selected, optical-to-near-infrared photometric catalog of
the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS), making it publicly available to
the astronomical community. The dataset is founded on publicly available
imaging, supplemented by original zJK imaging data obtained as part of the
MUltiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile (MUSYC). The final photometric catalog
consists of photometry derived from nine band U-K imaging covering the full
0.5x0.5 sq. deg. of the ECDFS, plus H band data for approximately 80% of the
field. The 5sigma flux limit for point-sources is K = 22.0 (AB). This is also
the nominal completeness and reliability limit of the catalog: the empirical
completeness for 21.75 < K < 22.00 is 85+%. We have verified the quality of the
catalog through both internal consistency checks, and comparisons to other
existing and publicly available catalogs. As well as the photometric catalog,
we also present catalogs of photometric redshifts and restframe photometry
derived from the ten band photometry. We have collected robust spectroscopic
redshift determinations from published sources for 1966 galaxies in the
catalog. Based on these sources, we have achieved a (1sigma) photometric
redshift accuracy of Dz/(1+z) = 0.036, with an outlier fraction of 7.8%. Most
of these outliers are X-ray sources. Finally, we describe and release a utility
for interpolating restframe photometry from observed SEDs, dubbed InterRest.
Particularly in concert with the wealth of already publicly available data in
the ECDFS, this new MUSYC catalog provides an excellent resource for studying

Fluctuation of Anti-Domain 1 and Anti-Β2 Glycoprotein I Antibody Titers Over Time in Patients with Persistently Positive Antiphospholipid Antibodies
OBJECTIVE: This work aims at evaluating longitudinally titers of antibodies against β2-glycoprotein I (β2GPI) and domain 1 (anti-D1), identifying predictors of the variation of anti-D1 and anti-β2GPI antibody titers and clarifying whether antibody titer fluctuations predict thrombosis in a large international cohort of patients persistently positive for antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL), the "APS ACTION Registry". METHODS: Patients with available blood samples from at least 4 time points were included. Anti-β2GPI and anti-D1 IgG were tested by chemiluminescence (BioFlash, INOVA Diagnostics). RESULTS: In a cohort of 230 patients, anti-D1 and anti-β2GPI titers decreased significantly over time (p<0.0001 and p=0.010, respectively). After adjustment for age, gender, and number of positive aPL tests, the fluctuation of anti-D1 and anti-β2GPI titers was associated with treatment with hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) at each time-point. Treatment with HCQ, but not immunosuppressors, was associated with 1.3-fold and 1.4-fold decrease in anti-D1 and anti-β2GPI titers, respectively. Incident vascular events were associated with 1.9-fold and 2.1-fold increase of anti-D1 and anti-β2GPI titers, respectively. Anti-D1 and anti-β2GPI titers at the time of thrombosis were lower compared to the other time-points: 1.6-fold decrease in anti-D1 titers and 2-fold decrease in anti-β2GPI titers conferred an OR for incident thrombosis of 6.0 (95%CI 0.62-59.3) and 9.4 (95%CI 1.1-80.2), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with HCQ and incident vascular events significant predicted anti-D1 and anti-β2GPI titer fluctuation over time. Cardiac responses to β‐adrenoceptor stimulation is partly dependent on mitochondrial calcium uniporter activity
Background and Purpose: Despite the importance of mitochondrial Ca2+ to metabolic regulation and cell physiology, little is known about the mechanisms that regulate Ca2+ entry into the mitochondria. Accordingly, we established a system to determine the role of the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter in an isolated heart model, at baseline and during increased workload following β-adrenoceptor stimulation. Experimental Approach: Cardiac contractility, oxygen consumption and intracellular Ca2+ transients were measured in ex vivo perfused murine hearts. Ru360 and spermine were used to modify mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter activity. Changes in mitochondrial Ca2+ content and energetic phosphate metabolite levels were determined. Key Results: The addition of Ru360, a selective inhibitor of the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter, induced progressively and sustained negative inotropic effects that were dose-dependent with an EC50 of 7 μM. Treatment with spermine, a uniporter agonist, showed a positive inotropic effect that was blocked by Ru360. Inotropic stimulation with isoprenaline elevated oxygen consumption (2.7-fold), Ca2+-dependent activation of pyruvate dehydrogenase (5-fold) and mitochondrial Ca2+ content (2.5-fold). However, in Ru360-treated hearts, this parameter was attenuated. In addition, β-adrenoceptor stimulation in the presence of Ru360 did not affect intracellular Ca2+ handling, PKA or Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent PK signalling. Conclusions and Implications: Inhibition of the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter decreases β-adrenoceptor response, uncoupling between workload and production of energetic metabolites. Our results support the hypothesis that the coupling of workload and energy supply is partly dependent on mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter activity.Centro de Investigaciones Cardiovasculare
Global warming and recurrent mass bleaching of corals
During 2015–2016, record temperatures triggered a pan-tropical episode of coral bleaching, the third global-scale event since mass bleaching was first documented in the 1980s. Here we examine how and why the severity of recurrent major bleaching events has varied at multiple scales, using aerial and underwater surveys of Australian reefs combined with satellite-derived sea surface temperatures. The distinctive geographic footprints of recurrent bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef in 1998, 2002 and 2016 were determined by the spatial pattern of sea temperatures in each year. Water quality and fishing pressure had minimal effect on the unprecedented bleaching in 2016, suggesting that local protection of reefs affords little or no resistance to extreme heat. Similarly, past exposure to bleaching in 1998 and 2002 did not lessen the severity of bleaching in 2016. Consequently, immediate global action to curb future warming is essential to secure a future for coral reefs
I know people who can and who cannot: A measure of the perception of economic inequality in everyday life
Versión preprintThis paper describes the development of the Perceived Economic Inequality in Everyday Life (PEIEL) scale. It is written and validated in Spanish. We first carried out an exploratory study, using a sample of 205 participants (52.2% men and 47.8% women; age: M = 24.69, SD = 8.95). We then conducted a confirmatory study with a sample size of 215 individuals (43.7% men and 56.3% women; age: M = 23.83, SD = 6.46). Results showed that the PEIEL scale is a valid and reliable unidimensional instrument. This scale negatively predicted tolerance of economic inequality over and above perceived inequality measured by wage gap estimates.
