Constraining the primordial spectrum of metric perturbations from gravitino and moduli production
We consider the production of gravitinos and moduli fields from quantum
vacuum fluctuations induced by the presence of scalar metric perturbations at
the end of inflation. We obtain the corresponding occupation numbers, up to
first order in perturbation theory, in terms of the power spectrum of the
metric perturbations. We compute the limits imposed by nucleosynthesis on the
spectral index for different models with constant . The results show
that, in certain cases, such limits can be as strong as , which is
more stringent than those coming from primordial black hole production.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, 5 figures. Corrected figures, new references

Is null-point reconnection important for solar flux emergence?
The role of null-point reconnection in a 3D numerical MHD model of solar
emerging flux is investigated. The model consists of a twisted magnetic flux
tube rising through a stratified convection zone and atmosphere to interact and
reconnect with a horizontal overlying magnetic field in the atmosphere. Null
points appear as the reconnection begins and persist throughout the rest of the
emergence, where they can be found mostly in the model photosphere and
transition region, forming two loose clusters on either side of the emerging
flux tube. Up to 26 nulls are present at any one time, and tracking in time
shows that there is a total of 305 overall, despite the initial simplicity of
the magnetic field configuration. We find evidence for the reality of the nulls
in terms of their methods of creation and destruction, their balance of signs,
their long lifetimes, and their geometrical stability. We then show that due to
the low parallel electric fields associated with the nulls, null-point
reconnection is not the main type of magnetic reconnection involved in the
interaction of the newly emerged flux with the overlying field. However, the
large number of nulls implies that the topological structure of the magnetic
field must be very complex and the importance of reconnection along separators
or separatrix surfaces for flux emergence cannot be ruled out.Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures. Added one referenc
Superstring in a pp-wave background at finite temperature - TFD approach
A thermodynamical analysis for the type IIB superstring in a pp-wave
background is considered. The thermal Fock space is built and the temperature
SUSY breaking appears naturally by analyzing the thermal vacuum. All the
thermodynamical quantities are derived by evaluating matrix elements of
operators in the thermal Fock space. This approach seems to be suitable to
study thermal effects in the BMN correspondence context.Comment: 15 pages, revtex4, references added, typos correcte
Is nonperturbative inflatino production during preheating a real threat to cosmology?
We discuss toy models where supersymmetry is broken due to non-vanishing
time-varying vacuum expectation value of the inflaton field during preheating.
We discuss the production of inflatino the superpartner of inflaton due to
vacuum fluctuations and then we argue that they do not survive until
nucleosynthesis and decay along with the inflaton to produce a thermal bath
after preheating. Thus the only relevant remnant is the helicity \pm 3/2
gravitinos which can genuinely cause problem to nucleosynthesis.Comment: 10 pages, Updates to match the accepted version in Phys. Rev.
Emergence of Anti-Cancer Drug Resistance: Exploring the Importance of the Microenvironmental Niche via a Spatial Model
Practically, all chemotherapeutic agents lead to drug resistance. Clinically,
it is a challenge to determine whether resistance arises prior to, or as a
result of, cancer therapy. Further, a number of different intracellular and
microenvironmental factors have been correlated with the emergence of drug
resistance. With the goal of better understanding drug resistance and its
connection with the tumor microenvironment, we have developed a hybrid
discrete-continuous mathematical model. In this model, cancer cells described
through a particle-spring approach respond to dynamically changing oxygen and
DNA damaging drug concentrations described through partial differential
equations. We thoroughly explored the behavior of our self-calibrated model
under the following common conditions: a fixed layout of the vasculature, an
identical initial configuration of cancer cells, the same mechanism of drug
action, and one mechanism of cellular response to the drug. We considered one
set of simulations in which drug resistance existed prior to the start of
treatment, and another set in which drug resistance is acquired in response to
treatment. This allows us to compare how both kinds of resistance influence the
spatial and temporal dynamics of the developing tumor, and its clonal
diversity. We show that both pre-existing and acquired resistance can give rise
to three biologically distinct parameter regimes: successful tumor eradication,
reduced effectiveness of drug during the course of treatment (resistance), and
complete treatment failure
New Strings for Old Veneziano Amplitudes III. Symplectic Treatment
A d-dimensional rational polytope P is a polytope whose vertices are located
at the nodes of d-dimensional Z-lattice. Consider a number of points inside the
inflated polytope (with coefficient of inflation k, k=1,2, 3...). The Ehrhart
polynomial of P counts the number of such lattice points (nodes) inside the
inflated P and (may be) at its faces (including vertices). In Part I
(hep-th/0410242) of our four parts work we noticed that the Veneziano amplitude
is just the Laplace transform of the generating function (considered as a
partition function in the sence of statistical mechanics) for the Ehrhart
polynomial for the regular inflated simplex obtained as a deformation retract
of the Fermat (hyper) surface living in complex projective space. This
observation is sufficient for development of new symplectic (this work) and
supersymmetric (hep-th/0411241)physical models reproducing the Veneziano (and
Veneziano-like) amplitudes. General ideas (e.g.those related to the properties
of Ehrhart polynomials) are illustrated by simple practical examples (e.g. use
of mirror symmetry for explanation of available experimental data on pion-pion
scattering) worked out in some detail. Obtained final results are in formal
accord with those earlier obtained by Vergne [PNAS 93 (1996) 14238].Comment: 48 pages J.Geom.Phys.(in press, available on line
Metacognition and lifelong e-learning: a contextual and cyclical process
Metacognition is arguably an important conceptualisation within the area of lifelong e- learning, with many theorists and practitioners claiming that it enhances the learning process. However, the lifelong, cyclical and flexible aspects of 'before', 'during' and 'after' metacognitions within lifelong e-learning (inclusive of whether an 'input' necessarily leads to a completed 'output') seem marginal within current areas of practical and theoretical debate. This article analyses Reeves's (1997) model of web-based learning in the context of the ADAPT project; a study of lifelong learners based in small and medium sized enterprises. The article focuses upon an analysis of this model's view of metacognition, and in the light of the project findings and literature review, aims to put forward an extended and expanded version of the model with reference to lifelong e-learnin
Use of high-frequency ultrasound to study the prenatal development of cranial neural tube defects and hydrocephalus in Gldc-deficient mice
Objective: We used non-invasive high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) imaging to investigate embryonic brain development in a mouse model for neural tube defects (NTDs) and non-ketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH). Method: Using HFUS, we imaged embryos carrying loss of function alleles of Gldc encoding glycine decarboxylase, a component of the glycine cleavage system in mitochondrial folate metabolism, which is known to be associated with cranial NTDs and NKH in humans. We serially examined the same litter during the second half of embryonic development and quantified cerebral structures. Genotype was confirmed using PCR. Histology was used to confirm ultrasound findings. Results: High-frequency ultrasound allowed in utero detection of two major brain abnormalities in Gldc-deficient mouse embryos, cranial NTDs (exencephaly) and ventriculomegaly (corresponding with the previous finding of post-natal hydrocephalus). Serial ultrasound allowed individual embryos to be analysed at successive gestational time points. From embryonic day 16.5 to 18.5, the lateral ventricle volume reduced in wild-type and heterozygous embryos but increased in homozygous Gldc-deficient embryos. Conclusion: Exencephaly and ventriculomegaly were detectable by HFUS in homozygous Gldc-deficient mouse embryos indicating this to be an effective tool to study CNS development. Longitudinal analysis of the same embryo allowed the prenatal onset and progression of ventricle enlargement in Gldc-deficient mice to be determined
Leptogenesis and rescattering in supersymmetric models
The observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe can be due to the
violating decay of heavy right handed (s)neutrinos. The amount of the asymmetry
depends crucially on their number density. If the (s)neutrinos are generated
thermally, in supersymmetric models there is limited parameter space leading to
enough baryons. For this reason, several alternative mechanisms have been
proposed. We discuss the nonperturbative production of sneutrino quanta by a
direct coupling to the inflaton. This production dominates over the
corresponding creation of neutrinos, and it can easily (i.e. even for a rather
small inflaton-sneutrino coupling) lead to a sufficient baryon asymmetry. We
then study the amplification of MSSM degrees of freedom, via their coupling to
the sneutrinos, during the rescattering phase which follows the nonperturbative
production. This process, which mainly influences the (MSSM) flat
directions, is very efficient as long as the sneutrinos quanta are in the
relativistic regime. The rapid amplification of the light degrees of freedom
may potentially lead to a gravitino problem. We estimate the gravitino
production by means of a perturbative calculation, discussing the regime in
which we expect it to be reliable.Comment: (20 pages, 6 figures), references added, typos corrected. Final
