Quand les pierres pensent. Remarques sur les messages politiques des demeures seigneuriales dans l'Italie de la Renaissance

International audienceDès la fin du XIIIe siècle, les formes de pouvoir familial et personnel se multiplièrent dans les villes de l’Italie centro-septentrionale. Si la plupart de ces expériences seigneuriales fut de courte durée, nombre d’entre elles parvint cependant à se maintenir pour prendre, dès la première moitié du XIVe siècle, un net tournant autoritaire. Une inscription délibérée dans l’espace urbain accompagna souvent l’établissement de la domination politique et sociale mais les demeures seigneuriales ne furent ni la traduction parfaite, dans la pierre, d’un plan tracé sur le papier, ni la matérialisation singulière d’un projet politique nouveau rompant avec les traditions antérieures. Le processus même de leur élaboration entretenait l’image d’une cité organique, stable et apaisée, dont l’ordre et la beauté auraient dû faire oublier les tensions sociales et politiques par lesquelles le gouvernement communal avait été dénaturé en un système de domination personnelle

The Gromov width of complex Grassmannians

We show that the Gromov width of the Grassmannian of complex k-planes in C^n is equal to one when the symplectic form is normalized so that it generates the integral cohomology in degree 2. We deduce the lower bound from more general results. For example, if a compact manifold N with an integral symplectic form omega admits a Hamiltonian circle action with a fixed point p such that all the isotropy weights at p are equal to one, then the Gromov width of (N,omega) is at least one. Displacing Lagrangian toric fibers by extended probes

In this paper we introduce a new way of displacing Lagrangian fibers in toric symplectic manifolds, a generalization of McDuff's original method of probes. Extended probes are formed by deflecting one probe by another auxiliary probe. Using them, we are able to displace all fibers in Hirzebruch surfaces except those already known to be nondisplaceable, and can also displace an open dense set of fibers in the weighted projective space P(1,3,5) after resolving the singularities. We also investigate the displaceability question in sectors and their resolutions. There are still many cases in which there is an open set of fibers whose displaceability status is unknown.Comment: 53 pages, 26 figures; v3: minor corrections and updated references.
