    Validación de método de registración CT-MR aplicado a pacientes epilépticos

    El objetivo de este trabajo es la validación de un método de registración que permite cuantificar su eficacia para determinar la transformación espacial que mejor ajusta la conversión de coordenadas desde el espacio de la Tomografía Computada (CT) al espacio de Resonancia Magnética (MR) para su aplicación en pacientes epilépticos. Los resultados obtenidos del Error de Registración (TRE del inglés Target Registration Error) y los resultados obtenidos del error en cada punto marcado presentan una marcada variación entre ellos. Esta variación también es observada entre los valores de los distintos sujetos. Los resultados obtenidos en la validación de este método son aceptables desde el punto de vista de la registración de imágenes. Para la determinación de la posición espacial del foco epileptógeno se encuentra en el límite superior de lo tolerable. Los valores de error de registración en los tres casos analizados son superiores, aunque en el mismo orden de magnitud del máximo error permisible.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativ

    Efficacy of anthropometric measures for identifying cardiovascular disease risk in adolescents: review and meta-analysis.

    INTRODUCTION: To compare the ability of Body Mass Index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and waist to height ratio (WHtR) to estimate cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk levels in adolescents. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed after a database search for relevant literature (Cochrane, Centre for Review and Dissemination, PubMed, British Nursing Index, CINAHL, BIOSIS citation index, ChildData, metaRegister). EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: The study included 117 records representing 96 studies with 994,595 participants were included in the systematic review, 14 of which (13 studies, N.=14,610) were eligible for the meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis showed that BMI was a strong indicator of systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and insulin; but not total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein or glucose. Few studies were eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis considering WC or WHtR (N.≤2). The narrative synthesis found measures of central adiposity to be consistently valid indicators of the same risk factors as BMI. CONCLUSIONS: BMI was an indicator of CVD risk. WC and WHtR were efficacious for indicating the same risk factors BMI performed strongly for, though there was insufficient evidence to judge the relative strength of each measure possibly due to heterogeneity in the methods for measuring and classifying WC

The aim of the study was to explore how British men’s online accounts construct a male pill as a potential contraceptive option for family planning. The two online articles reported the scientific innovations, as well as the production and marketing, of a nonhormonal, plant-based pill for men. Discourse analysis was used to analyze the online comments, from which two discourses emerged: (a) “Men as responsible health consumers” and (b) “‘Killing sperm’ and other side effects on semen.” When provided with the opportunity to take future responsibility for family planning, male readers were found to be unlikely to use a contraceptive pill. The men expressed the need for new options of contraception but, overall, felt a male pill was not the solution

    Disease prevention is an umbrella term embracing individual-based or population-based interventions aimed at preventing the manifestation of diseases (primary prevention), reducing the impact of a disease that has arisen (secondary prevention), or mitigating the impact of an ongoing illness (tertiary prevention). Digital health has the potential to improve prevention of chronic diseases. Its application ranges from effective mHealth weight-loss intervention to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes in overweight adults to the cost-effective intervention on the provision of mental-health care via mobile-based or Internet-based programs to reduce the incidence or the severity of anxiety. The present contribution focuses on the effectiveness of eHealth preventive interventions and on the role of digital health in improving health promotion and disease prevention. We also give a practical overview on how eHealth interventions have been effectively implemented, developed, and delivered for the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of chronic diseases

    Effectiveness landscape of crop pollinator assemblages: Implications to pollination service management

    There is a growing consensus that the world is facing a pollination crisis. To mitigate crop pollination deficits, some management strategies include the massive introduction of managed bee species, yet quite often they are applied blindly, as information on crop pollination effectiveness for each single pollinator species of assemblages is usually not available. Therefore, the introduction on managed species is not always the best option to improve crop yields. Here, by using the highly pollinator-dependent alfalfa crop (Medicago sativa L.) as a case study, we propose the use of the effectiveness landscape framework to identify key crop pollinator species. According to this framework, in a mutualistic interaction, each species´ effectiveness is represented by the product of a quantitative component and a qualitative one, these being measures of the outcomes of this interaction. We applied this framework for two managed and four wild bee species that visit alfalfa in fields southwest of Buenos Aires province, Argentina. We dissected the quantity components of the pollinator effectiveness landscape by estimating two quantitative subcomponents: visitation rate and flower tripping rate. Also, we estimate pod set as a qualitative component without dissecting it in subcomponents. Our results showed that the contribution of both components and the resulting pollinator effectiveness varied among pollinator species, indicating a contrasting effectiveness of different bee species on alfalfa pollination. For example, pollinator effectiveness was higher for managed than for wild bees, as consequence of their very high visitation rate, however, wild bee flower tripping rate and pod set were as high as managed ones. In fact, wild bees were more effective in promoting flower tripping than one of the managed bees (A. mellifera). This approach allowed us to assess which effectiveness components and subcomponents make pollinator species more or less effective, thus providing valuable information to identify key species to be enhanced to help in closing yield gaps.     Critical observations on and suggested ways forward for healthcare communication during COVID-19: pEACH position paper

    Objective: Communication in healthcare has influenced and been influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this position paper, we share observations based on the latest available evidence and experiential knowledge that have emerged during the pandemic, with a specific focus on policy and practice. Methods: This is a position paper that presents observations relating to policy and practice in communication in healthcare related to COVID-19. Results: Through our critical observations as experts in the field of healthcare communication, we share our stance how healthcare communication has occured during the pandemic and suggest possible ways of improving policy and professional practice. We make recommendations for policy makers, healthcare providers, and communication experts while also highlighting areas that merit further investigation regarding healthcare communication in times of healthcare crises. Conclusion: We have witnessed an upheaval of healthcare practice and the development of policy on-the-run. To ensure that policy and practice are evidence-based, person-centred, more inclusive and equitable, we advocate for critical reflection on this symbiotic relationship between COVID-19 and the central role of communication in healthcare. Practice implications: This paper provides a summary of the key areas for development in communication in healthcare during COVID-19. It offers recommendations for improvement and a call to review policies and practice to build resilience and inclusive and equitable responsiveness in communication in healthcare

    eHealth and mHealth to Manage Distress in Patients with an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator

    One of the main benefits of the eHealth and mHealth approach is that it overcomes those limitations associated with the traditional, restricted and highly expensive in-patient treatment of many chronic pathologies, by reducing complications from a clinical, organizational and economic prospective. Mobile communication devices, therefore, may be an effective way to ensure long-term maintenance and improvement of health outcomes among patients with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). Employment of eHealth and mHealth usually increases participation, compliance, and engagement toward treatment and helps clinicians by motivating patients in remote settings to withstand medical treatments and to cope with chronic conditions, also in a stepped-care approach. Clinical experiences and best practices regarding mHealth based strategies used to tele-monitor patients with an ICD are reported/highlighted in this chapter which discusses methodological, clinical and technological issues. At the end of the chapter future trends of eHealth\u2013 mHealth applications for ICDs are discussed

    Tracking Hurricanes using GPS atmospheric precipitable water vapor field

    Tropical cyclones are one of the most powerful severe weather events that produce devastating socioeconomic and environmental impacts in the areas they strike. Therefore, monitoring and tracking of the arrival times and path of the tropical cyclones are extremely valuable in providing early warning to the public and governments. Hurricane Florence struck the East cost of USA in 2018 and offers an outstanding case study. We employed Global Positioning System (GPS) derived precipitable water vapor (PWV) data to track and investigate the characteristics of storm occurrences in their spatial and temporal distribution using a dense ground network of permanent GPS stations. Our findings indicate that a rise in GPS-derived PWV occurred several hours before Florence’s manifestation. Also, we compared the temporal distribution of the GPS-derived PWV content with the precipitation value for days when the storm appeared in the area under influence. The study will contribute to quantitative assessment of the complementary GPS tropospheric products in hurricane monitoring and tracking using GPS-derived water vapor evolution from a dense network of permanent GPS station
