Economic benefits of Mt. Cook National Park
Market and non-market valued decisions are associated with New Zealand's system of national parks. The use benefits of Mount Cook National Park are not priced by the market mechanism, whereas many of the inputs necessary to operate and maintain the Park are priced. Estimates of the economic benefits are relevant information when deciding upon the allocation of resources to, and within, a system of national parks.
In 1984, the consumers' surplus for adult New Zealand visitors was about 58. These expenditures give rise to secondary economic benefits and create opportunities for regional development. Visitor expenditures in the Mackenzie Basin area are associated with 6.8 million of additional regional income, and 196 jobs. These effects derive their significance from regional objectives; they are not indicators of the national benefits associated with Mount Cook National Park
Probing Solar Convection
In the solar convection zone acoustic waves are scattered by turbulent sound
speed fluctuations. In this paper the scattering of waves by convective cells
is treated using Rytov's technique. Particular care is taken to include
diffraction effects which are important especially for high-degree modes that
are confined to the surface layers of the Sun. The scattering leads to damping
of the waves and causes a phase shift. Damping manifests itself in the width of
the spectral peak of p-mode eigenfrequencies. The contribution of scattering to
the line widths is estimated and the sensitivity of the results on the assumed
spectrum of the turbulence is studied. Finally the theoretical predictions are

Reentrant ventricular arrhythmias in the late myocardial infarction period. 12. Spontaneous versus induced reentry and intramural versus epicardial circuits
One to 5 days after one-stage ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery in dogs, reentrant excitation can be induced by programmed premature stimulation in the surviving electrophysiologically abnormal, thin epicardial layer overlying the infarct. In experiments in four dogs, reentrant excitation occurred “spontaneously” during a regular sinus or atria) rhythm. A tachycardia-dependent Wenckebach conduction sequence in a potentially reentrant pathway was the initiating mechanism for spontaneous reentrant tachycardias and was the basis for both manifest and concealed reentrant extrasystolic rhythms. In all dogs showing spontaneous reentry, reentrant excitation could also be induced by premature stimulation at cycle lengths much shorter than those associated with spontaneous reentry, and induced reentrant circuits were always different from those during spontaneous reentry. In two dogs, the reentrant circuit was located intramurally in close proximity to a patchy septal infarction.The study illustrates that irrespective of the anatomic localization of reentrant circuits (epicardial or intramural), their dimension (large or small) or their mechanism of initiation (programmed premature stimulation or “spontaneous”), reentrant excitation always occurred in a figure 8 configuration (or a modification thereof). The figure 8 model, rather than the ring model or the leading circle model, may be the common model of reentry in the mammalian heart
Engendered Expressions of Anxiety: Men's Emotional Communications With Women and Other Men.
While the contemporary therapeutic discourse inveigles us to talk about our personal problems, a countervailing neo-liberal healthist discourse, aligning with conventional masculinity norms, presumes that we will manage any issues independently. This discursive tension can be difficult to navigate, especially for men confronted with still powerful traditional expectations around masculinity (e.g., self-reliance; personal control; restricted emotionality). Although qualitative research has examined how men negotiate masculinities with respect to depression, to date there has been scant attention focused on men experiencing anxiety. This article reports on an interview study with men, some with anxiety diagnoses and some without (N = 17). Thematic analysis highlights that participants can and do talk about their anxieties, most readily with significant women in their lives (e.g., partners; mothers)-although this is not always straightforward. Talking to other men was more fraught, and while participants were wary of sharing problems with male friends, or signaled issues indirectly, they also highlighted situations where they would open up e.g., workspaces where they felt safe; with best friends. Those who had gone through a therapeutic process over many years tended to me more comfortable talking to others, male or female, about their mental health-and were also keen to other support to others where they could. Our analysis suggests that despite stereotypical notions of silent, self-contained men, there are many contexts where men may feel comfortable sharing their stories of pain and suffering. This chimes with wider cultural changes and the reported experiences of some mental health initiatives

Multi-messenger astronomy of gravitational-wave sources with flexible wide-area radio transient surveys
We explore opportunities for multi-messenger astronomy using gravitational
waves (GWs) and prompt, transient low-frequency radio emission to study highly
energetic astrophysical events. We review the literature on possible sources of
correlated emission of gravitational waves and radio transients, highlighting
proposed mechanisms that lead to a short-duration, high-flux radio pulse
originating from the merger of two neutron stars or from a superconducting
cosmic string cusp. We discuss the detection prospects for each of these
mechanisms by low-frequency dipole array instruments such as LWA1, LOFAR and
MWA. We find that a broad range of models may be tested by searching for radio
pulses that, when de-dispersed, are temporally and spatially coincident with a
LIGO/Virgo GW trigger within a \usim 30 second time window and \usim 200
\mendash 500 \punits{deg}^{2} sky region. We consider various possible
observing strategies and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. Uniquely,
for low-frequency radio arrays, dispersion can delay the radio pulse until
after low-latency GW data analysis has identified and reported an event
candidate, enabling a \emph{prompt} radio signal to be captured by a
deliberately targeted beam. If neutron star mergers do have detectable prompt
radio emissions, a coincident search with the GW detector network and
low-frequency radio arrays could increase the LIGO/Virgo effective search
volume by up to a factor of \usim 2. For some models, we also map the
parameter space that may be constrained by non-detections.Comment: 31 pages, 4 figure
Hierarchy and Feedback in the Evolution of the E. coli Transcription Network
The E.coli transcription network has an essentially feedforward structure,
with, however, abundant feedback at the level of self-regulations. Here, we
investigate how these properties emerged during evolution. An assessment of the
role of gene duplication based on protein domain architecture shows that (i)
transcriptional autoregulators have mostly arisen through duplication, while
(ii) the expected feedback loops stemming from their initial cross-regulation
are strongly selected against. This requires a divergent coevolution of the
transcription factor DNA-binding sites and their respective DNA cis-regulatory
regions. Moreover, we find that the network tends to grow by expansion of the
existing hierarchical layers of computation, rather than by addition of new
layers. We also argue that rewiring of regulatory links due to
mutation/selection of novel transcription factor/DNA binding interactions
appears not to significantly affect the network global hierarchy, and that
horizontally transferred genes are mainly added at the bottom, as new target
nodes. These findings highlight the important evolutionary roles of both
duplication and selective deletion of crosstalks between autoregulators in the
emergence of the hierarchical transcription network of E.coli.Comment: to appear in PNA
Observations of Giant Pulses from Pulsar PSR B0950+08 using LWA1
We report the detection of giant pulse emission from PSR B0950+08 in 24 hours
of observations made at 39.4 MHz, with a bandwidth of 16 MHz, using the first
station of the Long Wavelength Array, LWA1. We detected 119 giant pulses from
PSR B0950+08 (at its dispersion measure), which we define as having SNRs at
least 10 times larger than for the mean pulse in our data set. These 119 pulses
are 0.035% of the total number of pulse periods in the 24 hours of
observations. The rate of giant pulses is about 5.0 per hour. The cumulative
distribution of pulse strength is a steep power law, , but much less steep than would be expected if we were observing the
tail of a Gaussian distribution of normal pulses. We detected no other
transient pulses in a dispersion measure range from 1 to 90 pc cm, in
the beam tracking PSR B0950+08. The giant pulses have a narrower temporal width
than the mean pulse (17.8 ms, on average, vs. 30.5 ms). The pulse widths are
consistent with a previously observed weak dependence on observing frequency,
which may be indicative of a deviation from a Kolmogorov spectrum of electron
density irregularities along the line of sight. The rate and strength of these
giant pulses is less than has been observed at 100 MHz. Additionally, the
mean (normal) pulse flux density we observed is less than at 100 MHz.
These results suggest this pulsar is weaker and produces less frequent giant
pulses at 39 MHz than at 100 MHz.Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, typos correcte
