Global Well-posedness of Strong Solutions to the 3D Primitive Equations with Horizontal Eddy Diffusivity

In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem of the 3D primitive equations for oceanic and atmospheric dynamics with only horizontal diffusion in the temperature equation. Global well-posedness of strong solutions are established with H2H^2 initial data.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1312.603

Bootstrap testing for cross-correlation under low firing activity

    Get PDF
A new cross-correlation synchrony index for neural activity is proposed. The index is based on the integration of the kernel estimation of the cross-correlation function. It is used to test for the dynamic synchronization levels of spontaneous neural activity under two induced brain states: sleep-like and awake-like. Two bootstrap resampling plans are proposed to approximate the distribution of the test statistics. The results of the first bootstrap method indicate that it is useful to discern significant differences in the synchronization dynamics of brain states characterized by a neural activity with low firing rate. The second bootstrap method is useful to unveil subtle differences in the synchronization levels of the awake-like state, depending on the activation pathway.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figure

This research presents a content analysis of images of Physical Education textbooks published under the legal framework of the LOE - Organic Law of Education - 2/2006, 3rd May - . The aim was to identify the stereotypes in the body culture that is transmitted across the photographs of these copies for the stage of the Secondary Obligatory Education - ESO -. The sample is formed by a total of 539 images from two different publishing houses. For the data processing we have used the SPSS 15.0. Data have been subjected to univariate and bivariate descriptive analyses and Pearson's Ji-square test. The results show a clear inequality in favor of the presence of the masculine figure opposite to the feminine one and also there is different assignation of physical activities for men and women. The representation of the different racial groups is scanty and associated with the performance sport. The images perpetuate the invisibility of the handicapped people and also the elders.

The representation of disability in physical education textbooks in Spain

The objective was to identify the main characteristics of the way that people with disabilities are represented in secondary physical education textbooks. The study was empirical and descriptive. The sample comprised 6.773 photographs. The methodology employed was a content analysis using an ad hoc observational instrument which was scientifically validated through a pilot study, a consultation with experts and an inter-coding test. Univariate and bivariate analysis were carried out; statistical calculations utilised SPSS 20.0. Results showed that the representation of people with disabilities in physical education textbooks is very limited, both in terms of frequency and diversity. Some positive changes were noted with regards to similar, previously published research. There are signs of a move away from an elite sports model towards a more varied representation that includes artistic motor expression, physical fitness training and physical activities in natural environments which do not necessarily take place in the traditional educational environment.Xunta de Galicia | Ref. integrOmics: an R package to unravel relationships between two omics datasets

    Get PDF
Motivation: With the availability of many ‘omics’ data, such as transcriptomics, proteomics or metabolomics, the integrative or joint analysis of multiple datasets from different technology platforms is becoming crucial to unravel the relationships between different biological functional levels. However, the development of such an analysis is a major computational and technical challenge as most approaches suffer from high data dimensionality. New methodologies need to be developed and validated

Logarithmical hopping encoding: a low computational complexity algorithm for image compression

    Get PDF
LHE (logarithmical hopping encoding) is a computationally efficient image compression algorithm that exploits the Weber–Fechner law to encode the error between colour component predictions and the actual value of such components. More concretely, for each pixel, luminance and chrominance predictions are calculated as a function of the surrounding pixels and then the error between the predictions and the actual values are logarithmically quantised. The main advantage of LHE is that although it is capable of achieving a low-bit rate encoding with high quality results in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and image quality metrics with full-reference (FSIM) and non-reference (blind/referenceless image spatial quality evaluator), its time complexity is O( n) and its memory complexity is O(1). Furthermore, an enhanced version of the algorithm is proposed, where the output codes provided by the logarithmical quantiser are used in a pre-processing stage to estimate the perceptual relevance of the image blocks. This allows the algorithm to downsample the blocks with low perceptual relevance, thus improving the compression rate. The performance of LHE is especially remarkable when the bit per pixel rate is low, showing much better quality, in terms of PSNR and FSIM, than JPEG and slightly lower quality than JPEG-2000 but being more computationally efficient

Magnetic properties of nanostructured systems based on TbFe2

    Get PDF
The aim of this work is to study the magnetic properties of annealed [Fe3Ga/TbFe2]n heterostructures grown by sputtering at room temperature. The interest of investigating multilayers comprised of TbFe2 and Fe3Ga is their complementary properties in terms of coercivity and magnetostriction. We have studied the thickness combination which optimizes the magnetic and magnetostrictive properties of the annealed multilayers. The crystallization of the Laves phase upon the thermal treatment in heterostructures with thick TbFe2 layers promotes the increase of the coercivity. This crystallization seems to be prevented by the low mechanical stiffness of the Fe3Ga. [Fe3Ga/TbFe2]n heterostructures show promising characteristics, λ of 340 ppm and a HC of 220 Oe, for the development of new magnetostrictive devices

Recent Advances Concerning Certain Class of Geophysical Flows

This paper is devoted to reviewing several recent developments concerning certain class of geophysical models, including the primitive equations (PEs) of atmospheric and oceanic dynamics and a tropical atmosphere model. The PEs for large-scale oceanic and atmospheric dynamics are derived from the Navier-Stokes equations coupled to the heat convection by adopting the Boussinesq and hydrostatic approximations, while the tropical atmosphere model considered here is a nonlinear interaction system between the barotropic mode and the first baroclinic mode of the tropical atmosphere with moisture. We are mainly concerned with the global well-posedness of strong solutions to these systems, with full or partial viscosity, as well as certain singular perturbation small parameter limits related to these systems, including the small aspect ratio limit from the Navier-Stokes equations to the PEs, and a small relaxation-parameter in the tropical atmosphere model. These limits provide a rigorous justification to the hydrostatic balance in the PEs, and to the relaxation limit of the tropical atmosphere model, respectively. Some conditional uniqueness of weak solutions, and the global well-posedness of weak solutions with certain class of discontinuous initial data, to the PEs are also presented.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1507.0523
