La encrucijada bilingĂĽe en la literatura. Reflexiones sociolingĂĽĂsticas y literarias en torno a "L’últim home que parlava catalĂ " de Carles Casajuana
Taking the Catalan case as an example, this article analyses the impact of language choice of writers who live and write between languages and cultures. After a first part in which the linguistic dilemma is depicted by offering a general view of the frontier authors in the Catalan context, this essay focuses on the study of L’últim home que parlava catalĂ (Carles Casajuana 2009), a novel in which the construct of fiction and metafiction serves both to analyse the question of literary bilingualism –the bilingual crossroad in literature– and to highlight certain controversial aspects of Catalonia’s particular sociolinguistic map, its language policies and the underlying ideological tensions.
Fourteen-year status report of fatal illnesses in captive chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera)
Fur ranching has been a prosperous industry for decades. Despite its worldwide distribution, little published information is available regarding the importance of the various causes of death in chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera). In the period 1999–2013, 698 captive chinchillas from different commercial ranches were presented for necropsy at the Pathology Department (UNLP). Two-hundred and forty-four animals (35.0%) had classical enteritis, 198 (28.4%) had pneumonia, 63 (9.0%) had other infections, 40 (5.7%) had traumatic injuries, 109 (15.6%) had miscellaneous conditions, meanwhile 44 (6.3%) had no significant lesions. Although some disease processes may be underrepresented (i.e. heat stroke and the shock syndrome), the data were collected from a field wide enough and over a sufficient period to give a reliable overview of the fatal problems of this rodent in captivity.Fil: Martino, Pablo Eduardo. The Importance of the Entrepreneur’s Perception of “Success”
Purpose - In spite of the fact that the success of new ventures has been a widely studied topic in the field of entrepreneurship, no consensus on what is understood by the success of a firm can be found in the literature. Thus, the objective of this work is to discover what the entrepreneur really understands by the success of his/her business in its early years. To that end, this study clarifies the principal indicators used by entrepreneurs and analyses the relationship between how entrepreneurs understand the success of their business and the performance of that business. Design/methodology/approach – In a logit regression model, the research data are analyzed, using a sample of 98 entrepreneurs who are the heads of new firms in various sectors of activity. Findings - The study shows that there is a relationship between the way in which the entrepreneur measures how the business is doing and the performance of that business. More specifically, this research reveals that it is not the use of a greater number of indicators to measure the success that identifies the successful newly-created business from the unsuccessful, but the fact that those indicators are from different perspectives. Moreover, the results show that customer-related indicators are more effective than financial indicators to distinguish between successful and unsuccessful organizations. Research limitations/implications – Future research including qualitative interviews will help to further investigate the relationship between the entrepreneur’s perception of success and company performance. Practical implications – As a result of this research, the entrepreneurs can be conscience about how important it is the way they understand “the success” before they constitute their business. The results of this study mean a valuable knowledge to the academics that research in the entrepreneurship field, specifically to those that are focused on the success factors study. Originality/value – This research is pioneering in relating the way that the entrepreneur measures his company’s success and demonstrating its importance.Entrepreneur’s perception of success; new ventures; entrepreneurship.
The IStReS database: Reflections on the configuration of the field of Iberian Studies
This paper discusses the objectives and methodologies of the IStReS (Iberian Studies Reference Site) project. IStReS (http://istres.letras.ulisboa.pt) is an online platform that provides tools for researchers in the field of Iberian Studies, which include a searchable bibliographic database, a “Who’s who” of relevant scholars in the field, and frequent news updates about happenings in the discipline. On the other hand, it presents an analysis of the 1,786 references that are currently included in the database in order to obtain a more detailed image of the status of Iberian Studies today. The results will allow to draw some conclusions on the current configuration of the field
