    Radon and King Solomons Miners: Faynan Orefeild, Jordanian desert

    Concentrations of 222Rn were measured in ancient copper mines which exploited the Faynan Orefield in the South-Western Jordanian Desert. The concentrations of radon gas detected indicate that the ancient metal workers would have been exposed to a significant health risk and indicate that any future attempt to exploit the copper ores must deal with the hazard identified. Seasonal variations in radon concentrations are noted and these are linked to the ventilation of the mines. These modern data are used to explore the differential exposure to radon and the health of ancient mining communities

    In vitro growth and differentiation of primary myoblasts on thiophene based conducting polymers

    Polythiophenes are attractive candidate polymers for use in synthetic cell scaffolds as they are amenable to modification of functional groups as a means by which to increase biocompatibility. In the current study we analysed the physical properties and response of primary myoblasts to three thiophene polymers synthesized from either a basic bithiophene monomer or from one of two different thiophene monomers with alkoxy functional groups. In addition, the effect of the dopants pTS- and ClO4 - was investigated. In general, it was found that pTS- doped polymers were significantly smoother and tended to be more hydrophilic than their ClO 4 - doped counterparts, demonstrating that the choice of dopant significantly affects the polythiophene physical properties. These properties had a significant effect on the response of primary myoblasts to the polymer surfaces; LDH activity measured from cells harvested at 24 and 48 h post-seeding revealed significant differences between numbers of cells attaching to the different thiophene polymers, whilst all of the polymers equally supported cell doubling over the 48 h period. Differences in morphology were also observed, with reduced cell spreading observed on polymers with alkoxy groups. In addition, significant differences were seen in the polymers\u27 ability to support myoblast fusion. In general pTS- doped polymers were better able to support fusion than their ClO4 - doped counterparts. These studies demonstrate that modification of thiophene polymers can be used to promote specific cellular response (e.g. proliferation over differentiation) without the use of biological agents. 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry

    Multi-Element Abundance Measurements from Medium-Resolution Spectra. IV. Alpha Element Distributions in Milky Way Dwarf Satellite Galaxies

    We derive the star formation histories of eight dwarf spheroidal (dSph) Milky Way satellite galaxies from their alpha element abundance patterns. Nearly 3000 stars from our previously published catalog (Paper II) comprise our data set. The average [alpha/Fe] ratios for all dSphs follow roughly the same path with increasing [Fe/H]. We do not observe the predicted knees in the [alpha/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] diagram, corresponding to the metallicity at which Type Ia supernovae begin to explode. Instead, we find that Type Ia supernova ejecta contribute to the abundances of all but the most metal-poor ([Fe/H] < -2.5) stars. We have also developed a chemical evolution model that tracks the star formation rate, Types II and Ia supernova explosions, and supernova feedback. Without metal enhancement in the supernova blowout, massive amounts of gas loss define the history of all dSphs except Fornax, the most luminous in our sample.     INCITE: A randomised trial comparing constraint induced movement therapy and bimanual training in children with congenital hemiplegia

    Background: Congenital hemiplegia is the most common form of cerebral palsy (CP) accounting for 1 in 1300 live births. These children have limitations in capacity to use the impaired upper limb and bimanual coordination deficits which impact on daily activities and participation in home, school and community life. There are currently two diverse intensive therapy approaches. Traditional therapy has adopted a bimanual approach (BIM training) and recently, constraint induced movement therapy (CIMT) has emerged as a promising unimanual approach. Uncertainty remains about the efficacy of these interventions and characteristics of best responders. This study aims to compare the efficacy of CIMT to BIM training to improve outcomes across the ICF for school children with congenital hemiplegia

    Skeletal muscle cell proliferation and differentiation on polypyrrole substrates doped with extracellular matrix components

    Conducting polymers have been developed as substrates for in vitro studies with a range of cell types including electrically-excitable cells such as nerve and smooth muscle. The goal of this study was to optimise and characterise a range of polypyrrole materials to act as substrates for electrical stimulation of differentiating skeletal myoblasts. Although all of the polymer materials provided suitable substrates for myoblast adhesion and proliferation, significant differences became apparent under the low-serum conditions used for differentiation of primary myoblasts. The significance of the work lies in the design and control of polymer materials to facilitate different stages of skeletal muscle cell proliferation and/or differentiation, opening up opportunities for engineering of this tissue. This paper therefore constitutes not just a biocompatibility assessment but a comprehensive study of how synthesis conditions affect the final outcome in terms of cell response

    New dimensions for hospital services and early detection of disease: a Review from the Lancet Commission into liver disease in the UK

    This Review, in addressing the unacceptably high mortality of patients with liver disease admitted to acute hospitals, reinforces the need for integrated clinical services. The masterplan described is based on regional, geographically sited liver centres, each linked to four to six surrounding district general hospitals-a pattern of care similar to that successfully introduced for stroke services. The plan includes the establishment of a lead and deputy lead clinician in each acute hospital, preferably a hepatologist or gastroenterologist with a special interest in liver disease, who will have prime responsibility for organising the care of admitted patients with liver disease on a 24/7 basis. Essential for the plan is greater access to intensive care units and high-dependency units, in line with the reconfiguration of emergency care due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This Review strongly recommends full implementation of alcohol care teams in hospitals and improved working links with acute medical services. We also endorse recommendations from paediatric liver services to improve overall survival figures by diagnosing biliary atresia earlier based on stool colour charts and better caring for patients with impaired cognitive ability and developmental mental health problems. Pilot studies of earlier diagnosis have shown encouraging progress, with 5-6% of previously undiagnosed cases of severe fibrosis or cirrhosis identified through use of a portable FibroScan in primary care. Similar approaches to the detection of early asymptomatic disease are described in accounts from the devolved nations, and the potential of digital technology in improving the value of clinical consultation and screening programmes in primary care is highlighted. The striking contribution of comorbidities, particularly obesity and diabetes (with excess alcohol consumption known to be a major factor in obesity), to mortality in COVID-19 reinforces the need for fiscal and other long delayed regulatory measures to reduce the prevalence of obesity. These measures include the food sugar levy and the introduction of the minimum unit price policy to reduce alcohol consumption. Improving public health, this Review emphasises, will not only mitigate the severity of further waves of COVID-19, but is crucial to reducing the unacceptable burden from liver disease in the UK
