    Correlation functions and emission time sequence of light charged particles from projectile-like fragment source in E/A = 44 and 77 MeV 40Ar + 27Al collisions

    Two-particle correlation functions, involving protons, deuterons, tritons, and alpha-particles, have been measured at very forward angles (0.7 deg < theta_lab < 7 deg), in order to study projectile-like fragment (PLF) emission in E/A = 44 and 77 MeV 40Ar + 27Al collisions. Peaks, originating from resonance decays, are larger at E/A = 44 than at 77 MeV. This reflects the larger relative importance of independently emitted light particles, as compared to two-particle decay from unstable fragments, at the higher beam energy. The time sequence of the light charged particles, emitted from the PLF, has been deduced from particle-velocity-gated correlation functions (discarding the contribution from resonance decays). Alpha-particles are found to have an average emission time shorter than protons but longer than tritons and deuterons.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Nuclear Physics

    Quantum corrections for pion correlations involving resonance decays

    A method is presented to include quantum corrections into the calculation of two-pion correlations for the case where particles originate from resonance decays. The technique uses classical information regarding the space-time points at which resonances are created. By evaluating a simple thermal model, the method is compared to semiclassical techniques that assume exponential decaying resonances moving along classical trajectories. Significant improvements are noted when the resonance widths are broad as compared to the temperature.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    Use of Cooking Fuels and Cataract in a Population-Based Study: The India Eye Disease Study.

    BACKGROUND: Biomass cooking fuels are commonly used in Indian households, especially by the poorest socioeconomic groups. Cataract is highly prevalent in India and the major cause of vision loss. The evidence on biomass fuels and cataract is limited. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association of biomass cooking fuels with cataract and type of cataract. METHODS: We conducted a population-based study in north and south India using randomly sampled clusters to identify people ≥ 60 years old. Participants were interviewed and asked about cooking fuel use, socioeconomic and lifestyle factors and attended hospital for digital lens imaging (graded using the Lens Opacity Classification System III), anthropometry, and blood collection. Years of use of biomass fuels were estimated and transformed to a standardized normal distribution. RESULTS: Of the 7,518 people sampled, 94% were interviewed and 83% of these attended the hospital. Sex modified the association between years of biomass fuel use and cataract; the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for a 1-SD increase in years of biomass fuel use and nuclear cataract was 1.04 (95% CI: 0.88, 1.23) for men and 1.28 (95% CI: 1.10, 1.48) for women, p interaction = 0.07. Kerosene use was low (10%). Among women, kerosene use was associated with nuclear (OR = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.04, 2.97) and posterior subcapsular cataract (OR = 1.71, 95% CI: 1.10, 2.64). There was no association among men. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide robust evidence for the association of biomass fuels with cataract for women but not for men. Our finding for kerosene and cataract among women is novel and requires confirmation in other studies.     A Survey of Music Therapists Working in Pediatric Medical Settings in the United States

    Music therapy is becoming a standard supportive care service in many pediatric hospitals across the United States. However, more detailed information is needed to advance our understanding about current clinical practice and increase availability of pediatric music therapy services. The purpose of this cross-sectional survey study was to collect and summarize data about music therapists working in pediatric medical settings. Specifically, we collected information about (1) therapist demographics, (2) organizational structure, (3) service delivery and clinical practice, and (4) administrative/supervisory responsibilities. Board-certified music therapists working in pediatric medical settings (n = 118) completed a 37-item online questionnaire. We analyzed survey data using descriptive statistics and content analysis. Findings indicated that there is a ratio of approximately one music therapist for every 100 patient beds, that one-third of respondents are the only music therapist in their setting, and that half of the surveyed positions are philanthropically funded. Prioritizing patient referrals based on acuity was common (95.7%, n = 110), with palliative care and pain as the most highly prioritized needs. More than half of respondents reported serving in high acuity areas such as the pediatric intensive care, hematology/oncology, or neonatal intensive care units. We recommend replication of this survey in five years to examine growth and change in service delivery among pediatric music therapists over time, with additional studies to (a) explore how therapist-to-patient ratios influence quality of care, (b) identify factors that contribute to sustainability of programs, and (c) determine how expansion of services support a broader population of patients and families

    Neurodevelopmental Correlates of True and False Recognition

    The Deese/Roediger–McDermott (DRM) false-memory effect has been extensively documented in psychological research. People falsely recognize critical lures or nonstudied items that are semantically associated with studied items. Behavioral research has provided evidence for age-related increases in the DRM false-recognition effect. The present event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging study was aimed at investigating neurodevelopmental changes in brain regions associated with true- and false-memory recognition in 8-year olds, 12-year olds, and adults. Relative to 8-year olds, adults correctly endorsed more studied items as “old” but also mistakenly endorsed more critical lures. Age-related increases in recollection were associated with changes in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) activation profile. Additionally, age-related increases in false alarms (FAs) to semantically related lures were associated with changes in the activation profile of left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, a region associated with semantic processing. Additional regions exhibiting age-related changes include posterior parietal and anterior prefrontal cortices. In summary, concomitant changes in the MTL, prefrontal cortex, and parietal cortex underlie developmental increases in true and false recognition during childhood and adolescence

    Introduction Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (STAT) 3 is an oncogenic transcription factor found constitutively activated in several tumours, where it exerts its functions both as a canonical transcription factor and as a non-canonical regulator of energy metabolism and mitochondrial functions. These two activities rely on different post-translational activating events; the phosphorylation on Y705 is involved in nuclear activities, while that on S727 is relevant for mitochondrial functions. Mitochondrial STAT3 increases aerobic glycolysis and decreases ROS production, partly by interacting with the Electron Transfer Complexes (ETC). Material and methods By means of cell fractionations, we tested STAT3 localization to the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) in breast cancer cell lines dependent or not on STAT3 activity. We then measured Ca2+ release and apoptotic response in the same cells. The physical interaction between inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor type 3 (IP3R3) and STAT3 was demonstrated by co-IP either of the endogenous proteins or of their truncated/mutated forms, while STAT3 role in the degradation of IP3R3 was tested by serum starvation and refeeding experiments, followed by WB. Results and discussions We describe here the previously undetected abundant localization of STAT3 also to the ER. In this cellular compartment IP3R3, a Ca2+ channel that allows Ca2+ release from the ER and the mitochondrial associated membranes (MAMs) in response to IP3, regulates the balance between mitochondrial activation and Ca2+-triggered apoptosis. We observed that STAT3 within the ER physically interacts with IP3R3 and, via its phosphorylation on S727, it down-regulates Ca2+ release and apoptosis. Indeed, STAT3 silencing enhances both ER Ca2+ release and sensitivity to apoptosis following oxidative stress in STAT3-dependent mammary tumour cells, correlating with increased IP3R3 levels. In line with this, basal-like breast tumours, which frequently display constitutively active STAT3, show an inverse correlation between IP3R3 and STAT3 protein levels. Conclusion Our results indicate that S727-phosphorylated STAT3 contribute to mammary tumour aggressiveness, also by localising to the ER and regulating Ca2+ fluxes. STAT3-mediated enhanced IP3R3 degradation leads to decreased Ca2+ release and thus to resistance to apoptosis. This new non-canonical STAT3 role appears to be particularly relevant in basal-like breast cancers, adding a new mechanisms through which STAT3 exerts its well established pro-oncogenic anti-apoptotic role
