Injective dimension of sheaves of rational vector spaces

The Cantor-Bendixson rank of a topological space X is a measure of the complexity of the topology of X. The Cantor-Bendixson rank is most interesting when the space is profinite: Hausdorff, compact and totally disconnected. We will see that the injective dimension of the Abelian category of sheaves of rational vector spaces over a profinite space is determined by the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the space.Comment: 17 page

Understanding the Effect of Moral Transgressions in the Helping Professions: In Search of Conceptual Clarity

    Get PDF
There is a vast academic literature on the moral dimensions and ethical dilemmas of what are commonly referred to as the helping professions (e.g., nursing, medicine, social work, counseling, teaching). Over the past several decades, increasing attention has been paid to the issue of moral transgressions perpetrated, witnessed, or experienced by these professionals and their accompanying psychological and social outcomes. Scholars seeking to understand moral transgressions and their effects have proposed and examined a variety of constructs, including moral distress, demoralization, and moral injury. This article examines to what extent constructs related to moral transgressions and their associated psychological, emotional, and social effects overlap and diverge to describe similar or distinct phenomena and proposes a unified conceptual model of moral suffering. Understanding the moral dimensions of the helping professions is critical for effective research and just, ethical practice

Development and characterisation of monolithic silica stationary phases for ion chromatography

Silica based monolithic HPLC columns have received much attention in recent years, particularly those modified for reversed-phase separations. However, for ionexchange, silica based monolithic columns have received only limited attention. Therefore, the aim of this work was the development and characterisation of novel monolithic stationary phases for the rapid separation o f inorganic and organic ions. A 10 cm bare silica monolith has been modified on-column with iminodiacetic acid (IDA) groups and characterised for its selectivity toward alkali, alkaline earth and selected transition metal cations. The applicability of this IDA silica monolithic column for the rapid determination of alkaline earth metals in complex matrices was demonstrated. A second 10 cm bare silica monolith was functionalised with lysine (2 ,6 -diaminohexanoic acid) groups, and both the cation- and anion-exchange properties of the lysine functionalised monolith were evaluated, with a separation of 6 UV absorbing anions achieved in less than 100 seconds. By dynamically modifying the surface of the lysine functionalised silica monolith with copper (II) ions, it was possible to separate L-amino acids via ligand-exchange chromatography, using flow rates up to 7 mL/min. Finally, the ion-exchange properties o f a bare silica monolith were evaluated. The separation of alkaline and transition metal ions on a 10 cm bare silica monolith was possible using acetonitrile or methanol based ammonium and sodium acetate buffered eluents. The effects o f eluent ionic strength, organic content and pH on cation retention were evaluated, and in addition, the effect of solvent polarity on cation selectivity was also investigated

Gender identity asylum seekers in Ireland:A critical step for the trans liberation movement

    Get PDF
This paper explores the social and legal issues gender identity asylum seekers face when seeking international protection in Ireland. It argues that these issue compound the oppression of gender minorities. Through interviews with professionals involved in the asylum process and analysis of Refugee Status Determination decisions, the challenges gender identity asylum seekers face are revealed. Drawing on queer and intersectional perspectives, as well as theories from contemporary transgender studies, this paper critically assesses the legal landscape as it pertains to transgender and gender diverse individuals. It arrives at the conclusion that there are many, unique issues facing gender identity asylum seekers in. It similarly concludes that the law requires a conceptual shift to better promote and protect gender minorities from oppression under the cis-heteropatriarchy and to achieve equality and fairness for gender identity asylum seeker

Moral Injury Among Professionals in K–12 Education

    Get PDF
This article presents the quantitative portion of a mixed methods study of moral injury among professionals in K–12 public education. Using a cross-sectional correlational survey design, 218 licensed K–12 professionals from 68 schools in one urban school district in the Midwest completed an on-line survey that included measures of moral injury and emotional and behavioral correlates. The K–12 professionals exhibited levels of moral injury similar to those experienced by military veterans. Correlational analyses found that experiences of moral injury were associated with feelings of guilt, troubled conscience, burnout, and the intention to leave one’s job. Linear regression analyses demonstrated that professionals working in high-poverty, racially segregated schools were significantly more likely to endorse experiences of moral injury. These findings reinforce the significance of the intersectionality of race and class in reproducing oppressive and immoral educational practices and outcomes. A deeper understanding of and greater attention to potential sources of moral injury is critical in order to foster a more just and ethical education system
