Mantle-to-crust metal transfer by nanomelts
The transfer of chalcophile metals across the continental lithosphere has been traditionally
modeled based on their chemical equilibrium partitioning in sulfide liquids and silicate magmas.
Here, we report a suite of Ni-Fe-Cu sulfide droplets across a trans-lithospheric magmatic
network linking the subcontinental lithospheric mantle to the overlying continental crust.
Petrographic characteristics and numerical calculations both support that the sulfide droplets
were mechanically scavenged from the mantle source during partial melting and transported
upwards by alkalinemagmas rising through the continental lithosphere. Nanoscale investigation
by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) documents the presence of
galena (PbS) nanoinclusions within the sulfide droplets that are involved in the mantle-to-crust
magma route. The galena nanoinclusions show a range of microstructural features that are
inconsistent with a derivation of PbS by exsolution from the solid products of the Ni-Fe-Cu
sulfide liquid. It is argued that galena nanoinclusions crystallized from a precursor Pb(-Cu)-rich
nanomelt, which was originally immiscible within the sulfide liquid even at Pb concentrations
largely below those required for attaining galena saturation. We suggest that evidence of
immiscibility between metal-rich nanomelts and sulfide liquids during magma transport would
disrupt the classical way by which metal flux and ore genesis are interpreted, hinting for
mechanical transfer of nanophases as a key mechanism for sourcing the amounts of mantlederived

Metallogenic fingerprint of a metasomatized lithospheric mantle feeding gold endowment in the western Mediterranean basin

from Tallante (southeast Spain) record the
mineralogical and geochemical fingerprint
of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle
(SCLM) evolution beneath the southern Iberian
margin. Mantle metasomatism in fertile
lherzolites caused the crystallization of clinopyroxene
+ orthopyroxene + spinel clusters
through the percolation of Miocene subalkaline
melts during the westward migration of
the subduction front in the western Mediterranean.
In the Pliocene, heat and volatiles
provided by alkaline host-magmas triggered
very low melting degrees of metasomatic
pyroxene-spinel assemblages, producing
melt quenched to silicate glass and reactive
spongy coronae around clinopyroxene and
spinel. Refertilization of the Tallante peridotites
induced the precipitation of base-metal
sulfides (BMS) included in metasomatic
clino- and orthopyroxene. These sulfides
consist of pentlandite ± chalcopyrite ± bornite
aggregates with homogeneous composition
in terms of major elements (Ni, Fe, Cu)
and semi-metals (Se, As, Te, Sb, Bi), but with
wide variability of platinum-group elements
(PGE) fractionation (0.14 < PdN/IrN < 30.74).
Heterogeneous PGE signatures, as well
as the presence of euhedral Pt-Pd-Sn-rich
platinum-group minerals (PGM) and/or Auparticles
within BMS, cannot be explained by
conventional models of chalcophile partitioning
from sulfide melt. Alternatively, we suggest
that they reflect the incorporation of distinct
populations of BMS, PGM, and metal
nanoparticles (especially of Pt, Pd, and Au)
during mantle melting and/or melt percolation.
Therefore, we conclude that Miocene
subalkaline melts released by asthenosphere
upwelling upon slab tearing of the Iberian
continental margin effectively stored metals
in metasomatized domains of this sector
of the SCLM. Remarkably high Au concentrations
in Tallante BMS (median 1.78 ppm)
support that these metasomatized domains
provided a fertile source of metals, especially
gold, for the ore-productive Miocene magmatism

Gravimetric anomalies of the Guadix-Baza basin (Betic Cordillera, Spain)
Se han realizado los mapas gravimétricos de anomalías de Bouguer, regional y residual en la cuenca de Guadix-Baza (Cordillera Bética, sur de España) a partir de 3.648 nuevas estaciones de medida. El mapa de de anomalías residuales pretende ayudar a establecer las estructuras de la parte superior de la corteza y muestra claramente la existencia de varios depocentros importantes, en particular el del sector de Baza, controlados por fallas NNO-SSE en sus bordes orientales y occidentales, mientras que la zona de falla de Cádiz-Alicante los limita por el norte. Las facies sedimentarias y el espesor del relleno de la cuenca son congruentes con la posición de los depocentros: en el sector de Baza abundan en mayor proporción las facies lacustres que en los sectores de Guadix y Freila-Gorafe. La existencia de los depocentros está claramente determinada por la extensión ENE que afecta a la Cordillera.Gravimetric anomaly maps (Bouguer and residual) of the Guadix-Baza basin (Betic Cordillera, southern Spain) have been accomplished from the acquisition of 3648 new measurements. The residual anomaly map aims to evidence the features of the shallow crustal structures and clearly show the existence of several important depocentres (particularly that of the Baza sector) controlled by NNW-SSE faults in their eastern and western borders, while the northern borders are limited by the Cadiz-Alicante fault zone (s). The sedimentary facies and the thickness of the filling of the basin are consistent with the position of the depocentres: in the Baza area lacustrine facies are more abundant than in the depocentres of Guadix and Freila-Gorafe. Brain connectivity and cognitive functioning in individuals six months after multiorgan failure
Abstract
Multiorgan failure (MOF) is a life-threating condition that affects two or more systems of organs not involved in the disorder that motivates admission to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Patients who survive MOF frequently present long-term functional, neurological, cognitive, and psychiatric sequelae. However, the changes to the brain that explain such symptoms remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To determine brain connectivity and cognitive functioning differences between a group of MOF patients six months after ICU discharge and healthy controls (HC).
METHODS: 22 MOF patients and 22 HC matched by age, sex, and years of education were recruited. Both groups were administered a 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including structural T1 and functional BOLD, as well as a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation that included tests of learning and memory, speed of information processing and attention, executive function, visual constructional abilities, and language. Voxel-based morphometry was used to analyses T1 images. For the functional data at rest, functional connectivity (FC) analyses were performed.
RESULTS: There were no significant differences in structural imaging and neuropsychological performance between groups, even though patients with MOF performed worse in all the cognitive tests. Functional neuroimaging in the default mode network (DMN) showed hyper-connectivity towards sensory-motor, cerebellum, and visual networks. DMN connectivity had a significant association with the severity of MOF during ICU stay and with the neuropsychological scores in tests of attention and visual constructional abilities.
CONCLUSIONS: In MOF patients without structural brain injury, DMN connectivity six months after ICU discharge is associated with MOF severity and neuropsychological impairment, which supports the use of resting-state functional MRI as a potential tool to predict the onset of long-term cognitive deficits in these patients.Similar to what occurs at the onset of other pathologies, the observed hyper-connectivity might suggest network re-adaptation following MOF.This research was founded by Ministerio Economia, Industria y Competitividad, Spain and FEDER (grant no. Levelling Profiles and a GPS Network to Monitor the Active Folding and Faulting Deformation in the Campo de Dalias (Betic Cordillera, Southeastern Spain)
The Campo de Dalias is an area with relevant seismicity associated to the active tectonic deformations of the southern boundary of the Betic Cordillera. A non-permanent GPS network was installed to monitor, for the first time, the fault- and fold-related activity. In addition, two high precision levelling profiles were measured twice over a one-year period across the Balanegra Fault, one of the most active faults recognized in the area. The absence of significant movement of the main fault surface suggests seismogenic behaviour. The possible recurrence interval may be between 100 and 300 y. The repetitive GPS and high precision levelling monitoring of the fault surface during a long time period may help us to determine future fault behaviour with regard to the existence (or not) of a creep component, the accumulation of elastic deformation before faulting, and implications of the fold-fault relationship
Treatment with tocilizumab or corticosteroids for COVID-19 patients with hyperinflammatory state: a multicentre cohort study (SAM-COVID-19)
Objectives: The objective of this study was to estimate the association between tocilizumab or corticosteroids and the risk of intubation or death in patients with coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) with a hyperinflammatory state according to clinical and laboratory parameters.
Methods: A cohort study was performed in 60 Spanish hospitals including 778 patients with COVID-19 and clinical and laboratory data indicative of a hyperinflammatory state. Treatment was mainly with tocilizumab, an intermediate-high dose of corticosteroids (IHDC), a pulse dose of corticosteroids (PDC), combination therapy, or no treatment. Primary outcome was intubation or death; follow-up was 21 days. Propensity score-adjusted estimations using Cox regression (logistic regression if needed) were calculated. Propensity scores were used as confounders, matching variables and for the inverse probability of treatment weights (IPTWs).
Results: In all, 88, 117, 78 and 151 patients treated with tocilizumab, IHDC, PDC, and combination therapy, respectively, were compared with 344 untreated patients. The primary endpoint occurred in 10 (11.4%), 27 (23.1%), 12 (15.4%), 40 (25.6%) and 69 (21.1%), respectively. The IPTW-based hazard ratios (odds ratio for combination therapy) for the primary endpoint were 0.32 (95%CI 0.22-0.47; p < 0.001) for tocilizumab, 0.82 (0.71-1.30; p 0.82) for IHDC, 0.61 (0.43-0.86; p 0.006) for PDC, and 1.17 (0.86-1.58; p 0.30) for combination therapy. Other applications of the propensity score provided similar results, but were not significant for PDC. Tocilizumab was also associated with lower hazard of death alone in IPTW analysis (0.07; 0.02-0.17; p < 0.001).
Conclusions: Tocilizumab might be useful in COVID-19 patients with a hyperinflammatory state and should be prioritized for randomized trials in this situatio
Estudios de marcado y recaptura de especies marinas
Los resultados obtenidos del marcado y posterior recaptura de los ejemplares son una herramienta muy valiosa para contribuir a mejorar el conocimiento de la biología y ecología de una especie, examinando ciertos aspectos como son: el crecimiento, los movimientos o migraciones, la mortalidad o supervivencia, la abundancia y distribución de la especie, el hábitat y diferenciación de poblaciones o stocks. Actualmente la técnica de marcado se aplica a muchas especies, tanto terrestres como marinas, pertenecientes a diversos grupos zoológicos: peces, crustáceos, reptiles, moluscos y mamíferos. Este libro repasa algunos ejemplos de marcado de especies marinas de interés comercial. No todas las especies pueden ser marcadas, porque es necesario cumplir una serie de requisitos para poder llevar a cabo con éxito un experimento de marcado. En uno de los apartados de esta guía, se describen los distintos aspectos a tener en cuenta para obtener buenos resultados. Se describen los principales proyectos de marcado actualmente en ejecución o en marcha llevados a cabo por el Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO). En primer lugar, se describe brevemente la especie, su distribución, crecimiento, reproducción, alimentación, etc. A continuación, se presenta la información del marcado, es decir, campañas realizadas, número de ejemplares marcados y algunos de los resultados obtenidos hasta la fecha a partir de las recapturas disponibles. En algunas especies, los programas de marcado se llevan realizando desde hace más de 20 años, como es el caso del atún rojo, por lo que la información disponible es bastante amplia. En otros casos por el contrario como la merluza, los proyectos son relativamente recientes, no obstante los resultados son bastante interesantes y prometedores.Nowadays many different marine animals are being tagged. This book summarizes recent tagging programs carried out by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO). Although the objectives of these various studies mainly depend on the species and each project in particular, the general aim is to better understand the biology and ecology of these animals the structure and dynamics of their populations and their capacity to respond to human activities. This book provides an overview of different aspects of this technique such as a brief history of tagging, the types of tags currently used, including both conventional and electronic tags, where and how to put them on the marine animals, some recommendations regarding how to perform a tagging survey and where to go or what to do if anyone recovers a tagged fish or marine animal. The book then summarizes the main species tagged by the IEO, making a short description of their biology followed by some of the results obtained from tagging studies undertaken until now. Other applications are to know the spatial distribution (spawning or feeding areas), estimate growth parameters, mortality and survival rates, longevity, the size of the population or identifying stocks. Nowadays the advances in electronics have also open new fields such us the possibility of tracking an animal and knowing its habitat preferences and behaviour. Besides some of these tags have the capacity of recording this information during long periods and sending the data from long distances even without the need to recover the animal. Tagging activities constitute a very useful tool to improve the knowledge of many species and contribute to their management and conservation. For that reason this methodology is included in many IEO projects in which other activities like the monitoring of the fishery (landings, fishing effort, fleet characteristics, fishing areas, biological sampling, etc.) are carried out. Some projects are related with coastal pelagic fisheries including anchovy, sardine and mackerel or oceanic pelagic fisheries like tuna and billfish species and pelagic sharks. Others are focused on benthic and demersal species such as hake, black spot seabream, anglerfish, flatfish, etc. Nevertheless not all species can be tagged, as they have to survive being caught and handled before being release. For this reason, tagging techniques may not easily be applied to some species.Versión del edito
Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2
The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people. formed in Plio-Quaternary sediments, showing progressive unconformities in its limbs. At its ESE
prolongation, the recent glacis, Pleistocene in age, shows two flexions parallel to the fold hinge and limbs.
This fold has been probably controlled by the Tiscar fault and formed within a NNE-SSW compressive
