    Nuevos recursos didácticos para el aula digital: tradiciones antroponímicas del Madrid multicultural

    Este proyecto plantea un trabajo centrado en la elaboración, aplicación docente y evaluación de instrumentos didácticos on-line sobre antroponimia y sus tradiciones en el Madrid multicultural. Persigue aglutinar materiales educativos a disposición de los alumnos a través del Campus Virtual de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y de las páginas web de los dos Grupos de Investigación implicados en el equipo: “Onomástica y deonomástica” (www.ucm.es/onomastica-deonomastica) y “Organización territorial y administrativa del concejo de Madrid (ss. XIII-XVIII)” (www.ucm.es/documad/). La temática permite ofrecer a todos nuestros alumnos nuevas perspectivas y materiales sobre los estudios antroponímicos que, aunque enmarcados por lo general en el ámbito filológico, han sido también con frecuencia abordados por los historiadores

    La Fisiología es una disciplina científica básica, de carácter integrador, cuyo objetivo último es entender el funcionamiento de los organismos vivos a todos sus niveles, desde el molecular hasta el sistémico-orgánico, en su estado de salud y considerando su interacción con el medio ambiente. Con esta finalidad, la Fisiología se constituye como una disciplina básica en las áreas de conocimiento de ciencias y ciencias de la salud y puede considerarse como la base de la patología y de la farmacología. En España, los profesionales de la Fisiología (investigadores y docentes) se reúnen en la Sociedad Española de Ciencias Fisiológicas (SECF). La SECF tiene como misión promover la Fisiología como ciencia y actividad profesional a todos los niveles, dando a conocer su importancia para el desarrollo del conocimiento y, en definitiva, su valor socia

    Preclinical characterization of antagomiR-218 as a potential treatment for myotonic dystrophy

    Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a rare neuromuscular disease caused by expansion of unstable CTG repeats in a non-coding region of the DMPK gene. CUG expansions in mutant DMPK transcripts sequester MBNL1 proteins in ribonuclear foci. Depletion of this protein is a primary contributor to disease symptoms such as muscle weakness and atrophy and myotonia, yet upregulation of endogenous MBNL1 levels may compensate for this sequestration. Having previously demonstrated that antisense oligonucleotides against miR-218 boost MBNL1 expression and rescue phenotypes in disease models, here we provide preclinical characterization of an antagomiR-218 molecule using the HSALR mouse model and patient-derived myotubes. In HSALR, antagomiR-218 reached 40-60 pM 2weeks after injection, rescued molecular and functional phenotypes in a dose- and time-dependent manner, and showed a good toxicity profile after a single subcutaneous administration. In muscle tissue, antagomiR rescued the normal subcellular distribution of Mbnl1 and did not alter the proportion of myonuclei containing CUG foci. In patient-derived cells, antagomiR-218 improved defective fusion and differentiation and rescued up to 34% of the gene expression alterations found in the transcriptome of patient cells. Importantly, miR-218 was found to be upregulated in DM1 muscle biopsies, pinpointing this microRNA (miRNA) as a relevant therapeutic target.This work was funded by research grants from Instituto de Salud Carlos III, including funds from FEDER, to M.P.-A. and B.L.     Matching microscopic and macroscopic responses in glasses

    Primero reproducimos en las computadoras Janus y Janus II un experimento importante que mide la longitud de la coherencia de los hilados de vidrio a través de la reducción de las barreras de energía libre inducidas por el efecto Zeeman. En segundo lugar, determinamos el comportamiento de escala que permite un análisis cuantitativo de un nuevo experimento informado en la Carta complementaria [S. Guchhait y R. Orbach, Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 157203 (2017)]. El valor de la longitud de coherencia estimada a través del análisis de las funciones de correlación microscópicas resulta ser cuantitativamente consistente con su medición a través de las funciones de respuesta macroscópica. Además, las susceptibilidades no lineales, recientemente medidas en líquidos formadores de vidrio, se escalan como potencias de la misma longitud microscópica.We first reproduce on the Janus and Janus II computers a milestone experiment that measures the spin glass coherence length through the lowering of free-energy barriers induced by the Zeeman effect. Secondly, we determine the scaling behavior that allows a quantitative analysis of a new experiment reported in the companion Letter [S. Guchhait and R. Orbach, Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 157203 (2017)]. The value of the coherence length estimated through the analysis of microscopic correlation functions turns out to be quantitatively consistent with its measurement through macroscopic response functions.     Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

    BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.     Differential clinical characteristics and prognosis of intraventricular conduction defects in patients with chronic heart failure

    Intraventricular conduction defects (IVCDs) can impair prognosis of heart failure (HF), but their specific impact is not well established. This study aimed to analyse the clinical profile and outcomes of HF patients with LBBB, right bundle branch block (RBBB), left anterior fascicular block (LAFB), and no IVCDs. Clinical variables and outcomes after a median follow-up of 21 months were analysed in 1762 patients with chronic HF and LBBB (n = 532), RBBB (n = 134), LAFB (n = 154), and no IVCDs (n = 942). LBBB was associated with more marked LV dilation, depressed LVEF, and mitral valve regurgitation. Patients with RBBB presented overt signs of congestive HF and depressed right ventricular motion. The LAFB group presented intermediate clinical characteristics, and patients with no IVCDs were more often women with less enlarged left ventricles and less depressed LVEF. Death occurred in 332 patients (interannual mortality = 10.8%): cardiovascular in 257, extravascular in 61, and of unknown origin in 14 patients. Cardiac death occurred in 230 (pump failure in 171 and sudden death in 59). An adjusted Cox model showed higher risk of cardiac death and pump failure death in the LBBB and RBBB than in the LAFB and the no IVCD groups. LBBB and RBBB are associated with different clinical profiles and both are independent predictors of increased risk of cardiac death in patients with HF. A more favourable prognosis was observed in patients with LAFB and in those free of IVCDs. Further research in HF patients with RBBB is warranted

    El libro reúne trabajos en los que se exponen resultados de investigaciones presentadas por investigadores de Argentina, Chile, Brasil, España, Italia y Alemania en el XII Congreso de la Sociedad Argentina de Lingüística (SAL), Bicentenario: la renovación de la palabra, realizado en Mendoza, Argentina, entre el 6 y el 9 de abril de 2010.
