British and American expressions of politeness in anger-evoking contexts: a cultural-relativistic approach

Drawing on a contrastive analysis of TV talk shows Kilroy and Jerry Springer, this paper examines how participants exploit different politeness strategies in talk-show conflict, and how they build public identities for themselves and their opponents through discourse. More precisely, this article argues that the study of face management in British and American confrontational episodes makes it possible, not only to justify a cultural-relativistic approach to the expression of politeness, but also to characterise and define different notions of face in this specific anger-evoking context.Basándose en el análisis contrastivo de los programas televisivos de confrontación, Kilroy y Jerry Springer, británico y estadounidense respectivamente, el presente artículo examina las diferentes maneras en las que los invitados utilizan estrategias de cortesía lingüística en los momentos de enfrentamiento televisivo, con el propósito de construir una identidad pública propia y la de su oponente a través del discurso. Se argumenta que el estudio del concepto de administración de la «imagen lingüística» en episodios televisivos de confrontación hace posible justificar una línea de investigación cultural-relativista con respecto a las expresiones de cortesía en los ámbitos británico y estadounidense, al mismo tiempo que permite identificar y definir diversas nociones de «imagen lingüística» en tales contextos específicos de instigación de la ira

Attitude-behaviour discrepancy and cognitive disonance: tactics for enhancing compliance in persuasive discourse

In this paper I take a conversation analytic approach to examining persuasive strategies for enhancing compliance in talk show interaction. Basing my analysis on the discursive analysis of transcriptions of verbal aggression taken from the former UK TV talk show “Kilroy”, I argue that confl ictual episodes must not be viewed as an expressive act which results from a temporary loss of self-control but instrumentally. The discussion focuses on how guests’ persuasive strategies are based on their ability to find a balance between expressing their (violent) emotions and eliciting personal information from their opponents. Personal information disclosure is therefore key to allowing guests to build alignment and inducing compliance in talk show verbal confl ict sequences. Desde un enfoque pragmatico-discursivo, el presente estudio examina las estrategias persuasivas que facilitan la adhesion a un punto de vista concreto en talk shows. A partir del análisis de diferentes extractos extraídos del talk show británico Kilroy, se argumenta que los episodios de habla conflictiva no deben ser entendidos como un acto expresivo producto de una pérdida momentanea de autocontrol sino como un acto premeditado e instrumental. El análisis revela que las estrategias persuasivas que los invitados usan se basan en la habilidad de hallar un equilibrio entre la expresión de las emociones propias de un enfrentamiento verbal y la obtención de información personal por parte de sus oponentes. Es pues la manipulación de esta información frente a la audiencia la que permite a los invitados atraer a los demás a su punto de vista y hacer que la estrategia de persuasión sea efectiva

Laddish Behaviour and Gender Performativity in British and Spanish Personal Weblogs

The relationship between the speaking patterns of women and their social identities have previously been analysed in both oral interaction and written texts. The present paper examines contrastively British and Spanish female gender identity in personal weblogs, one of the latest modes of virtual communication. More specifically, this study is concerned with the tribulations of the British and Spanish teenage female self in narrating their love-lives in personal weblogs. It will be acknowledged that the construction of the teenage female self is still unstable in the twenty-first century. The results suggest these tribulations shed further light on the underlying ideological process which reveals the fight between the persistence of traditional patriarchal feminine behaviours and the appearance of culturally based androgynous behaviour patterns in both British and Spanish societies

Edublogs : un enfoque globalizador de las competencias básicas en el currículo de lengua extranjera

En los últimos años nuestro sistema educativo\ud ha sufrido dos reformas significativas que\ud comparten la necesidad imperiosa de mejorar\ud la calidad de la enseñanza en general y los\ud resultados académicos de nuestros alumnos\ud y alumnas en el área de lengua extranjera en\ud particular. El presente estudio nace de la falta de concreción del que adolecen el planteamiento y desarrollo de las competencias básicas en los currículos de la Ley Orgánica (2/2006) de Educación de Enseñanzas Mínimas en primaria (R.D. 1513/2006) y en secundaria (R.D.1631/2006). Sobre esta base, se analiza el uso\ud de los weblogs con fines educativos como\ud una herramienta para implantar las nuevas\ud tecnologías en el aula de lengua extranjera.\ud El objetivo principal es demostrar que estos\ud blogs no sólo son una herramienta de apoyo\ud imprescindible en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje, sino que además, desde un enfoque globalizador, se convierten en un elemento clave para la concreción de las competencias básicas.At the beginning of the twenty-fi rst century,\ud Spanish society is convinced both of the need\ud to improve the quality of education, but also to\ud ensure that the benefi ts reach all young people,\ud without exception. Among some other aims, to\ud encourage lifelong learning means providing\ud young people with an all-round education which\ud covers the knowledge and basic competences\ud necessary in today’s society, which allows\ud them to develop values which encourage\ud the practice of active citizenship, community\ud life and social cohesion, which stimulates in\ud them the desire to continue learning and the\ud capacity to learn autonomously. In this context,\ud the present study weighs the pros and cons\ud of using weblogs in education. In doing so, it\ud is argued that these particular weblogs are\ud not only a useful tool in the teaching-learning\ud process of a foreign language, but they are also\ud key to characterising and helping developing\ud students’ basic competences

Sneaking gender into the EFL class

The present study was conducted to engage undergraduate students training to be Primary School Teachers in the personal study of gender differences. More precisely the project aims, on the one hand, at getting undergraduates to openly explore the understanding of gender in the practice of teaching Primary school students and, on the other, at raising awareness of gender biased attitudes both in society and the classroom. My concern is that these future practitioners will be well positioned as teachers to reinscribe inequitable and discriminatory practices with their future students.El presente estudio presenta un proyecto llevado a cabo con estudiantes universitarios de primer curso de Magisterio (especialidad de lengua extranjera) en la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares. From the Person to the Institution: Religious Freedom and Institutions in Democratic States

Based on the assumption that the fundamental rights of people in most democratic states are governed by the personalist principle and that, of course, the religious freedom of the individual is an indisputable fundamental right, this paper reflects on the implications of these premises in the institutional field. The article consists of four chapters: the first two chapters are of a more general nature, and the next two chapters apply the general principles to the Spanish context. The first part discusses the personalist foundation that forms the basis of laws in democratic states. The author highlights the fact that the ethical value of the dignity of every human person provides an axiological foundation for the rules and fundamental laws enacted in the democratic constitutional order. The second part of the paper is devoted to the principle of subsidiarity, which – in a way – constitutes a bridge that makes it possible to transpose the dignity of the person to the functioning of the institutions that operate within a democratic state. Subsidiarity is an essential complement to personalism as it prioritizes the activity of the person that should be supported by the institutions of the State. The application of these general principles to the situation in Spain exemplifies them in the context of the understanding and enforcement of the right to religious freedom. By presenting specific legal solutions implemented in Spain in recent years, the author illustrates the challenges that the right to religious freedom is facing in modern democracies. The paper offers a compelling study of the joint effect of the principle of secularism in a democratic State and the principle of cooperation between the State and religious institutions (a concept referred to in the Spanish model as “positive secularism”) as they act upon social life to guarantee the implementation of a fundamental right of human persons: the right to religious freedom.Od osoby do instytucji: wolność religijna a instytucje w państwach demokratycznych Opierając się na założeniu, że podstawowe prawa człowieka w większości państw demokratycznych podlegają zasadzie personalistycznej i że oczywiście wolność religijna osoby jest niekwestionowanym prawem podstawowym, autor zastanawia się w niniejszym artykule nad implikacjami tych kwestii w przestrzeni instytucjonalnej. Artykuł składa się z następujących elementów: dwa pierwsze mają charakter ogólny, dwa kolejne są aplikacją zasad ogólnych do kontekstu hiszpańskiego. Część pierwsza ukazuje personalistyczny fundament stanowiący podstawę prawną w państwach demokratycznych. Autor naświetla, iż etyczna wartość godności każdej osoby ludzkiej jest aksjologiczną podstawą dla zasad i podstawowych praw ustanawianych w demokratycznym porządku konstytucyjnym. Druga część tekstu poświęcona jest analizie zasady pomocniczości - która jest swoistym mostem pozwalającym przejść od godności osoby do funkcjonowania instytucji działających w ramach demokratycznego państwa. Zasada pomocniczości stanowi konieczne uzupełnienie zasady personalizmu, nadając priorytet aktywności osoby, która winna być wspierana przez instytucje państwowe. Aplikacja tych ogólnych zasad do sytuacji w Hiszpanii stanowi ich egzemplifikację w kontekście rozumienia i egzekwowania prawa do wolności religijnej. Autor, ukazując konkretne rozwiązania prawne podjęte w Hiszpanii w ostatnich latach, ukazuje trudności, z jakimi musi się mierzyć we współczesnej demokracji prawo do wolności religijnej. To znakomite studium możliwości współoddziaływania na życie społeczne zasady laickości demokratycznego państwa oraz zasady współdziałania państwa z instytucjami religijnymi (w modelu hiszpańskim ta koincydencja nosi nazwę sekularyzmu pozytywnego) w celu zagwarantowania realizacji podstawowego prawa osób ludzkich, jakim jest prawo do wolności religijnej

Rayleigh wave ellipticity measurements in the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco

We combine Rayleigh wave ellipticity, or H/V (horizontal to vertical) amplitude ratios, measurements obtained using teleseismic earthquake recordings and ambient noise cross correlations to provide improved constraints on the crustal models across the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco. To obtain the H/V ratios, we use more than 250 shallow (h<40 km) teleseismic events with magnitudes Mw>6.0 recorded at more than 450 seismic stations. We also use all the multicomponent ambient noise cross correlations computed for each station pair for the time period 2010 to 2012. Periods between 20 and 100 seconds are investigated. We observe a good agreement between the uppermost geological features of the crust and the obtained Rayleigh H/V ratios, with low values in major mountain ranges and high ratios in sedimentary basins. Combination of Rayleigh H/V ratio measurements from both earthquakes and ambient noise data with phase velocities and other types of seismic data will help to better constrain the Earth’s structure at different crustal levels

La población española que residió en el protectorado francés de Marruecos mantuvo unas relaciones con la población marroquí muy singulares. Este artículo intenta poner de manifiesto las características de las interacciones personales entre españoles y marroquíes, durante un periodo que abarca desde los años cuarenta a finales de los años setenta del siglo veinte, reconstruyendo un sistema social y un modo de vida peculiar. Esta investigación se apoya en entrevistas en profundidad a antiguos residentes en el protectorado francés y a personas que continúan residiendo en Marruecos. Este trabajo consiste en el análisis de la historia de vida de un pequeño empresario que nació en la década de 1920 y que, después de haber pasado por varias ocupaciones, fundó su propia empresa. El objetivo es relacionar las aspiraciones personales de los fundadores de empresas con el desarrollo y la evolución de la empresa. Las motivaciones personales del empresario se transfieren al modo de gestionar la empresa, condicionan su desarrollo y se manifiestan en las relaciones con los clientes, proveedores y empleados. En el análisis, se han seguido los procesos metodológicos derivados de la «teoría fundamentada», con un programa informático de análisis cualitativo.This investigation consists of an analysis of the life story of a small entrepreneur who was born in the twenties of the last century. The objective of the survey is to relate the personal aspirations of the company founder to the development and evolution of the company. The study attempts to show the conection between the entrepreneur's personal ambitions, and the way the company is managed, and how those aspirations affect the company's evolution, and his relationship with the clients, suppliers and employees. The methodology has been based on the Grounded Theory, usinng software for the Qualitative Data Analysis
