Psychographic Traits Identification based on political ideology: An author analysis study on spanish politicians tweets posted in 2020

In general, people are usually more reluctant to follow advice and directions from politicians who do not have their ideology. In extreme cases, people can be heavily biased in favour of a political party at the same time that they are in sharp disagreement with others, which may lead to irrational decision making and can put people’s lives at risk by ignoring certain recommendations from the authorities. Therefore, considering political ideology as a psychographic trait can improve political micro-targeting by helping public authorities and local governments to adopt better communication policies during crises. In this work, we explore the reliability of determining psychographic traits concerning political ideology. Our contribution is twofold. On the one hand, we release the PoliCorpus-2020, a dataset composed by Spanish politicians’ tweets posted in 2020. On the other hand, we conduct two authorship analysis tasks with the aforementioned dataset: an author profiling task to extract demographic and psychographic traits, and an authorship attribution task to determine the author of an anonymous text in the political domain. Both experiments are evaluated with several neural network architectures grounded on explainable linguistic features, statistical features, and state-of-the-art transformers. In addition, we test whether the neural network models can be transferred to detect the political ideology of citizens. Our results indicate that the linguistic features are good indicators for identifying finegrained political affiliation, they boost the performance of neural network models when combined with embedding-based features, and they preserve relevant information when the models are tested with ordinary citizens. Besides, we found that lexical and morphosyntactic features are more effective on author profiling, whereas stylometric features are more effective in authorship attribution.publishedVersio

A generalized smith predictor for unstable time-delay SISO systems

[EN] In this work, a generalization of the Smith Predictor (SP) is proposed to control linear time-invariant (LTI) time-delay single-input single-output (SISO) systems. Similarly to the SP, the combination of any stabilizing output-feedback controller for the delay-free system with the proposed predictor leads to a stabilizing controller for the delayed system. Furthermore, the tracking performance and the steady-state disturbance rejection capabilities of the equivalent delay-free loop are preserved. In order to place this contribution in context, some modifications of the SP are revisited and recast under the same structure. The features of the proposed scheme are illustrated through simulations, showing a comparison with respect to the corresponding delay-free loop, which is here considered to be the ideal scenario. In order to emphasize the feasibility of this approach, a successful experimental implementation in a laboratory platform is also reported. This work was partially supported by the projects PROMETEOII/2013/004, Conselleria d'Educacio, Generalitat Valenciana; TIN2014-56158-C4-4-P-AR, Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad; and the FPI-UPV 2014 PhD Grant, Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, Spain.Sanz Díaz, R.; García Gil, PJ.; Albertos Pérez, P. Aspect-ratio and lateral-resolution enhancement in force microscopy by attaching nanoclusters generated by an ion cluster source at the end of a silicon tip

One of the factors that limit the spatial resolution in atomic force microscopy (AFM) is the physical size of the probe. This limitation is particularly severe when the imaged structures are comparable in size to the tip’s apex. The resolution in the AFM is usually enhanced by using sharp tips with high aspect ratios. In the present paper we propose an approach to modify AFM tips that consists of depositing nanoclusters on standard silicon tips. We show that the use of those tips leads to atomic force microscopy images of higher aspect ratios and spatial resolution. The present approach has two major properties. It provides higher aspect-ratio images of nanoscale objects and, at the same time, enables to functionalize the AFM tips by depositing nanoparticles with well-controlled chemical composition. The authors acknowledge the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación and Comisión Interministerial para la Ciencia Y la Tecnología—CICYT under Contract Nos. Enhanced extended state observer-based control for systems with mismatched uncertainties and disturbances

[EN] This paper presents an enhanced Extended State Observer (ESO)-based control strategy to deal with the disturbance attenuation problem for a class of non integral-chain systems subject to non-linear mismatched uncertainties and external disturbances. The proposed control strategy does not assume the integral-chain form and it is formed by a state-feedback plus a dynamic disturbance compensation term, which is designed to reject the disturbance effect in the system output. From a theoretical point of view, the proposed strategy is reduced to the conventional ESO when the integral chain form and the matched condition hold. In this sense, this paper is presented as an extension of the ESO principles to cover a wider class of systems. The theoretical results show that the internal zero-dynamics plays an important role in ESO-based control design. Also, the closed-loop stability is analyzed and some numerical simulations show the effectiveness of the proposal in comparison with previous ESO-based techniques. This work was partially supported by projects FPU15/02008, FPI-UPV 2014 and TIN2014-56158-C4-4-P-AR, Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad, Spain.Castillo-Frasquet, A.; García Gil, PJ.; Sanz Díaz, R.; Albertos Pérez, P. The purpose of the study was threefold: (a) to implement a game context approach to assess the game performance components and, in doing so, (b) to know if second graders have the appropriate development to learn games, and (c) to design a suitable learning progressions within tactical teaching approaches. Game performance was assessed in second graders (n=16; age 7-8 years) with special attention to decision making component. Participants achieved a high level of tactical awareness in attacking the goal contexts and low performance in response execution. Findings suggested that second grade students are ready to learn games as long as a tactical approach as Teaching Games for Understanding was used.
