Evaluation of six decontamination procedures for isolation of Mycobacterium avium complex from avian feces
Culture is considered the gold standard for definitive diagnosis of mycobacterial infections. However, consensus about the most suitable culture procedure for isolation of nontuberculous mycobacteria is lacking. The study compared the recoveries of mycobacteria after decontamination of spiked and fresh avian feces with 4% sodium hydroxide (NaOH), 12% sulfuric acid (H2SO4), or 1% cetylperidinium chloride (CPC), with and without mixture of three antibiotics, namely vancomycin (VAN, 100 μg/ml), nalidixic acid (NAL, 100 μg/ml), and amphotericin B (AMB, 100 μg/ml). The antibiotic mixture was referred to as VNA. Decontamination procedures were evaluated using two (n = 2) avian fecal samples spiked with 106, 104, and 102 CFU/ml of Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium (ATCC 15769) and fresh avian feces (n = 42). M. avium subsp. avium was detected on the culture media from spiked samples (106 and 104 CFU/ml) decontaminated with NaOH, NaOH-VNA, H2SO4, and H2SO4 -VNA for 2−6 weeks. These bacteria were detected in 2–4 weeks when using CPC and CPC-VNA. M. avium subsp. avium cannot be isolated on culture media from spiked samples (102 CFU/ml) decontaminated with any decontaminating agent. Two mycobacterial isolates, namely, Mycobacterium terrae and M. engbaekii, were isolated from field samples decontaminated with NaOH and CPC-VNA. With regard to the contamination rate, the use of CPC-VNA showed lower contamination rates (5.5% and 19.0%) from spiked and field samples than those of the other methods (NaOH: 22.2% and 59.5%, NaOH-VNA: 16.7% and 21.4%, H2SO4: 11.1% and 40.5%, H2SO4-VNA: 5.5% and 21.4%, and CPC: 66.7% and 50%). In conclusion, the decontamination of fecal samples following a two-step procedure with 1% CPC and VNA can ensure high recovery rate of many mycobacteria with the lowest contamination in cultures

A través del desarrollo de este trabajo se presenta la instalación, configuración y debida parametrización de algunos de los servicios de Zentyal Server 6.2, como opción de uso en la utilización de Windows Server. Los servicios descritos en este documento son DHCP Server, DNS Server, Controlador de Dominio, Proxy no Transparente, Cortafuegos, File Server, Print Server y VPN. Estas instalaciones y configuración se realizaron mediante la utilización de máquinas virtuales mediante el programa VirtualBox, donde se obtuvo el conocimiento para la implementación y puesta en marcha de estos servicios.Through the development of this work, the installation, configuration and proper parameterization of some of the Zentyal Server 6.2 services are presented, as an option for using Windows Server. The services described in this document are DHCP Server, DNS Server, Domain Controller, Non-Transparent Proxy, Firewall, File Server, Print Server, and VPN. These installations and configuration were carried out through the use of virtual machines through the VirtualBox program, where the knowledge for the implementation and start-up of these services was obtained

INNOVATIONS AND FRAGMENTS OF TRADITION IN SLOVENIAN VILLAGES
In this paper the author reports on some results of an investigation of innovations
in ten different types of village in Slovenia. The investigation was designed
to establish (1) the rate of development of rural communities in Slovenia (measured
according to the diffusion of innovations), and (2) the influence of tradition
(from the degree of the distribution of »isoetes«, i.e. local customs). ,
Two groups of innovations were investigated: innovations in land cultivation
methods on peasant farms, and innovations in the equipment of rural households.
The data were collected using the method of interviews, which were held with both
pure farmers and peasants-workers in 1968 and again in 1973. The obtained results
regarding the spread of farm innovations are shown in Diagram 1; the results regarding
the spread of innovations in household equipment are presented graphically
in Diagram 2; while Diagram 3 indicates the »standing« of each village as
regards the degree of innovation it has achieved with all the 25 controled innovations.
As was expected, the highest degree of innovation is shown by villages with
the largest proportion of inhabitants in temporary employment abroad and villages
vhich contain a comparatively numerous category of peasants-workers
Rapid and Accurate Detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Sputum Samples by Cepheid Xpert MTB/RIF Assay-A Clinical Validation Study
Background: A crucial impediment to global tuberculosis control is the lack of an accurate, rapid diagnostic test for detection of patients with active TB. A new, rapid diagnostic method, (Cepheid) Xpert MTB/RIF Assay, is an automated sample preparation and real-time PCR instrument, which was shown to have good potential as an alternative to current reference standard sputum microscopy and culture.Methods: We performed a clinical validation study on diagnostic accuracy of the Xpert MTB/RIF Assay in a TB and HIV endemic setting. Sputum samples from 292 consecutively enrolled adults from Mbeya, Tanzania, with suspected TB were subject to analysis by the Xpert MTB/RIF Assay. The diagnostic performance of Xpert MTB/RIF Assay was compared to standard sputum smear microscopy and culture. Confirmed Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a positive culture was used as a reference standard for TB diagnosis.Results: Xpert MTB/RIF Assay achieved 88.4% (95% CI = 78.4% to 94.9%) sensitivity among patients with a positive culture and 99% (95% CI = 94.7% to 100.0%) specificity in patients who had no TB. HIV status did not affect test performance in 172 HIV-infected patients (58.9% of all participants). Seven additional cases (9.1% of 77) were detected by Xpert MTB/RIF Assay among the group of patients with clinical TB who were culture negative. Within 45 sputum samples which grew non-tuberculous mycobacteria the assay's specificity was 97.8% (95% CI = 88.2% to 99.9%).Conclusions: The Xpert MTB/RIF Assay is a highly sensitive, specific and rapid method for diagnosing TB which has potential to complement the current reference standard of TB diagnostics and increase its overall sensitivity. Its usefulness in detecting sputum smear and culture negative patients needs further study. Further evaluation in high burden TB and HIV areas under programmatic health care settings to ascertain applicability, cost-effectiveness, robustness and local acceptance are required

anterior,

estudiosos
de
las
ciencias
de
la
conducta
de
la
Universidad
Autónoma
del
Estado
de
México,
ante
la
persistencia
y
proliferación
de
estos
hechos
en
diversas
partes
del
Mundo
y
de
nuestro
país
en
particular, se
convocó
a
los
estudiosos
interesados
y
a
la
sociedad
en
general
a
presentar
trabajos
para
analizar,
debatir
y
proponer
estrategias
de
acción
y
dirección,
que
fortalezcan
una
convivencia y bienestar con sentido humanista para una cultura de paz.
El
presente
texto
es
producto
de
esta convocatoria
que
recoge
los
trabajos
de
los
interesados
en
la
temática,
de
diferentes
países
(España,
Argentina,
Cuba,
Brasil,
Costa
Rica
y
México)
retomando
con
ello
sus
experiencias
relativas
al
estudio,
análisis,
comprensión
e
instrumentación
de
la
cultura
de
paz
en
los
distintos
ámbitos
institucionales
en
los
que
participan:
educativo,
salud,
penitenciario,
social,
laboral,
familia,
alimentario,
psicológico,
por
mencionar
algunos.
El
presente
libro,
propicia
un
espacio
de
reflexión,
diálogo
y
posicionamiento
de
las
ciencias
de
la
conducta
para
la
apropiación,
análisis,
debate
y
propuestas
que
fortalezcan
una
cultura
de
paz
a
través
de
la
convivencia
y
el
bienestar
social
con
sentido
humanista.
El
sistema
económico
neoliberal
y
el
proceso
de
globalización
han
contribuido
al
logro
de
avances
significativos
en
la
ciencia
y
la
tecnología,
pero
también
han
propiciado
la
polarización
de
las
sociedades
lo
que
ha
impactado
de
manera
negativa
a
la
sociedad
en
su
conjunto,
pero
en
mayor
medida
a
los grupos
vulnerables. Dicha
polarización
ha
traído
consigo
un
desarrollo
desigual
del
mundo
que
se
expresa
de
diferentes
maneras
tanto
en
países
desarrollados
como
en
los
llamados
del
tercer
mundo,
en
donde
no
están
satisfechas
las
necesidades
humanas
elementales
de
todos
los
sectores
de
la
población,
siempre
falta
algo.
Si
a
esto
le
sumamos
los
conflictos
internacionales por
diferentes
motivos
que
enfrentan
algunas
naciones,
una
insuficiente
cobertura
educativa
y
de
salud,
desempleo
y
pobreza
extrema,
entre
otras
cosas;
estamos
frente
a
retos
de
gran
envergadura
para
los
gobiernos,
para
los
estudiosos
y
para
la
sociedad
civil
en
general. Uno
de
los
intentos
para
frenar
y prevenir
la
agudización
de
estas
problemáticas
es
la
cultura
de
paz,
cuyo
estudio
y propuestas
han
ido
avanzando
en
diferentes
sentidos
y
de
manera
favorable,
el
tema
está
presente
en
diferentes
Organismos
Internacionales
como
la
ONU,
la
UNESCO,
la
OCDE,
El
Banco
Mundial,
entre
otros.

Studies of and production in and Pb collisions
The production of and mesons is studied in proton-proton and
proton-lead collisions collected with the LHCb detector. Proton-proton
collisions are studied at center-of-mass energies of and ,
and proton-lead collisions are studied at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon
of . The studies are performed in center-of-mass rapidity
regions (forward rapidity) and
(backward rapidity) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The
and production cross sections are measured differentially as a function
of transverse momentum for and , respectively. The differential cross sections are used to
calculate nuclear modification factors. The nuclear modification factors for
and mesons agree at both forward and backward rapidity, showing
no significant evidence of mass dependence. The differential cross sections of
mesons are also used to calculate cross section ratios,
which show evidence of a deviation from the world average. These studies offer
new constraints on mass-dependent nuclear effects in heavy-ion collisions, as
