The chemistry of La on the Si(001) surface
This paper reports state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations of La
adsorption on the Si(001) surface. We predict La chains in the low coverage
limit, which condense in a stable phase at a coverage of 1/5 monolayer. At 1/3
monolayer we predict a chemically rather inert, stable phase. La changes its
oxidation state from La(3+) at lower coverages to La(2+) at coverages beyond
1/3 monolayer. In the latter oxidation state, one electron resides in a state
with a considerable contribution from La-d and f states.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, 3 table
Singularities in ternary mixtures of k-core percolation
Heterogeneous k-core percolation is an extension of a percolation model which
has interesting applications to the resilience of networks under random damage.
In this model, the notion of node robustness is local, instead of global as in
uniform k-core percolation. One of the advantages of k-core percolation models
is the validity of an analytical mathematical framework for a large class of
network topologies. We study ternary mixtures of node types in random networks
and show the presence of a new type of critical phenomenon. This scenario may
have useful applications in the stability of large scale infrastructures and
the description of glass-forming systems.Comment: To appear in Complex Networks, Studies in Computational Intelligence,

Testing the validity of the proposed ICD-11 PTSDand complex PTSD criteria using a sample fromNorthern Uganda
Background: The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) is currently under development with proposed changes recommended for the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis and the inclusion of a separate complex PTSD (CPTSD) disorder. Empirical studies support the distinction between PTSD and CPTSD; however, less research has focused on non-western populations. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether distinct PTSD and CPTSD symptom classes emerged and to identify potential risk factors and the severity of impairment associated with resultant classes. Methods: A latent class analysis (LCA) and related analyses were conducted on 314 young adults from Northern Uganda. Fifty-one percent were female and participants were aged between 18 and 25 years. Forty percent of the participants were former child soldiers (n=124) while the remaining participants were civilians (n=190). Results: The LCA revealed three classes: a CPTSD class (40.2%), a PTSD class (43.8%), and a low symptom class (16%). Child soldier status was a significant predictor of both CPTSD and PTSD classes (OR=5.96 and 2.82, respectively). Classes differed significantly on measures of anxiety/depression, conduct problems, somatic complaints, and war experiences. Conclusions: To conclude, this study provides preliminary support for the proposed distinction between PTSD and CPTSD in a young adult sample from Northern Uganda. However, future studies are needed using larger samples to test alternative models before firm conclusions can be made
An Overview of the 13:8 Mean Motion Resonance between Venus and Earth
It is known since the seminal study of Laskar (1989) that the inner planetary
system is chaotic with respect to its orbits and even escapes are not
impossible, although in time scales of billions of years. The aim of this
investigation is to locate the orbits of Venus and Earth in phase space,
respectively to see how close their orbits are to chaotic motion which would
lead to unstable orbits for the inner planets on much shorter time scales.
Therefore we did numerical experiments in different dynamical models with
different initial conditions -- on one hand the couple Venus-Earth was set
close to different mean motion resonances (MMR), and on the other hand Venus'
orbital eccentricity (or inclination) was set to values as large as e = 0.36 (i
= 40deg). The couple Venus-Earth is almost exactly in the 13:8 mean motion
resonance. The stronger acting 8:5 MMR inside, and the 5:3 MMR outside the 13:8
resonance are within a small shift in the Earth's semimajor axis (only 1.5
percent). Especially Mercury is strongly affected by relatively small changes
in eccentricity and/or inclination of Venus in these resonances. Even escapes
for the innermost planet are possible which may happen quite rapidly.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, submitted to CMD
Swift observations of the X-ray and UV evolution of V2491 Cyg (Nova Cyg 2008 No. 2)
We present extensive, high-density Swift observations of V2491 Cyg (Nova Cyg
2008 No. 2). Observing the X-ray emission from only one day after the nova
discovery, the source is followed through the initial brightening, the
Super-Soft Source phase and back to the pre-outburst flux level. The evolution
of the spectrum throughout the outburst is demonstrated. The UV and X-ray
light-curves follow very different paths, although changes occur in them around
the same times, indicating a link between the bands. Flickering in the
late-time X-ray data indicates the resumption of accretion.
We show that if the white dwarf is magnetic, it would be among the most
magnetic known; the lack of a periodic signal in our later data argues against
a magnetic white dwarf, however. We also discuss the possibility that V2491 Cyg
is a recurrent nova, providing recurrence timescale estimates.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure (2 in colour), accepted for publication in MNRA
Novae Ejecta as Colliding Shells
Following on our initial absorption-line analysis of fifteen novae spectra we
present additional evidence for the existence of two distinct components of
novae ejecta having different origins. As argued in Paper I one component is
the rapidly expanding gas ejected from the outer layers of the white dwarf by
the outburst. The second component is pre-existing outer, more slowly expanding
circumbinary gas that represents ejecta from the secondary star or accretion
disk. We present measurements of the emission-line widths that show them to be
significantly narrower than the broad P Cygni profiles that immediately precede
them. The emission profiles of novae in the nebular phase are distinctly
rectangular, i.e., strongly suggestive of emission from a relatively thin,
roughly spherical shell. We thus interpret novae spectral evolution in terms of
the collision between the two components of ejecta, which converts the early
absorption spectrum to an emission-line spectrum within weeks of the outburst.
The narrow emission widths require the outer circumbinary gas to be much more
massive than the white dwarf ejecta, thereby slowing the latter's expansion
upon collision. The presence of a large reservoir of circumbinary gas at the
time of outburst is suggestive that novae outbursts may sometime be triggered
by collapse of gas onto the white dwarf, as occurs for dwarf novae, rather than
steady mass transfer through the inner Lagrangian point.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures; Revised manuscript; Accepted for publication in

Breakup Density in Spectator Fragmentation
Proton-proton correlations and correlations of protons, deuterons and tritons
with alpha particles from spectator decays following 197Au + 197Au collisions
at 1000 MeV per nucleon have been measured with two highly efficient detector
hodoscopes. The constructed correlation functions, interpreted within the
approximation of a simultaneous volume decay, indicate a moderate expansion and
low breakup densities, similar to assumptions made in statistical
multifragmentation models.

Statistical Multifragmentation in Central Au+Au Collisions at 35 MeV/u
Multifragment disintegrations, measured for central Au + Au collisions at E/A
= 35 MeV, are analyzed with the Statistical Multifragmentation Model. Charge
distributions, mean fragment energies, and two-fragment correlation functions
are well reproduced by the statistical breakup of a large, diluted and
thermalized system slightly above the multifragmentation threshold.Comment: Latex file, 8 pages + 4 postscript figures available upon request

Multifragment production in Au+Au at 35 MeV/u
Multifragment disintegration has been measured with a high efficiency
detection system for the reaction at . From the event
shape analysis and the comparison with the predictions of a many-body
trajectories calculation the data, for central collisions, are compatible with
a fast emission from a unique fragment source.Comment: 9 pages, LaTex file, 4 postscript figures available upon request from
