Hard X-ray identification of Eta Carinae and steadiness close to periastron
Context: The colliding-wind binary Eta Car exhibits soft X-ray thermal
emission that varies strongly around periastron, and non-thermal emission seen
in hard X-rays and gamma-rays.
Aims: To definitively identify Eta Car as the source of the hard X-ray
emission, to examine how changes in the 2-10 keV band influence changes in the
hard X-ray band, and to understand more clearly the mechanisms producing the
non-thermal emission using new INTEGRAL observations obtained close to
periastron.
Methods: A Chandra observation encompassing the ISGRI error circle was
analysed, and all other soft X-ray sources (including the outer shell of Eta
Car itself) were discarded as likely counter-parts. New hard X-ray images of
Eta Car were studied close to periastron, and compared to previous observations
far from periastron.
Results: The INTEGRAL component, when represented by a power law (with a
photon index of 1.8), would produce more emission in the Chandra band than
observed from any point source in the ISGRI error circle apart from Eta Car, as
long as the hydrogen column density to the ISGRI source is lower than 1E24
cm^{-2}. Such sources are rare, thus the ISGRI emission is very likely to be
associated with Eta Car. The eventual contribution of the outer shell to the
non-thermal component also remains fairly limited. Close to periastron, a
3-sigma detection is achieved for the hard X-ray emission of Eta Car, with a
flux similar to the average value far from periastron.
Conclusions: Assuming a single absorption component for both the thermal and
non-thermal sources, this detection can be explained with a hydrogen column
density that does not exceed 6E23 cm^{-2} without resorting to an intrinsic
increase in the hard X-ray emission. The energy injected in hard X-rays
(averaged over a month) appears rather constant as close as a few stellar

Herschel and JCMT observations of the early-type dwarf galaxy NGC 205
We present Herschel dust continuum, James Clerk Maxwell Telescope CO(3-2)
observations and a search for [CII] 158 micron and [OI] 63 micron spectral line
emission for the brightest early-type dwarf satellite of Andromeda, NGC 205.
While direct gas measurements (Mgas ~ 1.5e+6 Msun, HI + CO(1-0)) have proven to
be inconsistent with theoretical predictions of the current gas reservoir in
NGC 205 (> 1e+7 Msun), we revise the missing interstellar medium mass problem
based on new gas mass estimates (CO(3-2), [CII], [OI]) and indirect
measurements of the interstellar medium content through dust continuum
emission. Based on Herschel observations, covering a wide wavelength range from
70 to 500 micron, we are able to probe the entire dust content in NGC 205
(Mdust ~ 1.1-1.8e+4 Msun at Tdust ~ 18-22 K) and rule out the presence of a
massive cold dust component (Mdust ~ 5e+5 Msun, Tdust ~ 12 K), which was
suggested based on millimeter observations from the inner 18.4 arcsec. Assuming
a reasonable gas-to-dust ratio of ~ 400, the dust mass in NGC 205 translates
into a gas mass Mgas ~ 4-7e+6 Msun. The non-detection of [OI] and the low
L_[CII]-to-L_CO(1-0) line intensity ratio (~ 1850) imply that the molecular gas
phase is well traced by CO molecules in NGC 205. We estimate an atomic gas mass
of 1.5e+4 Msun associated with the [CII] emitting PDR regions in NGC 205. From
the partial CO(3-2) map of the northern region in NGC 205, we derive a

A resolved analysis of cold dust and gas in the nearby edge-on spiral NGC 891
We investigate the connection between dust and gas in the nearby edge-on
spiral galaxy NGC 891. High resolution Herschel PACS and SPIRE 70, 100, 160,
250, 350, and 500 m images are combined with JCMT SCUBA 850 m
observations to trace the far-infrared/submillimetre spectral energy
distribution (SED). Maps of the HI 21 cm line and CO(J=3-2) emission trace the
atomic and molecular hydrogen gas, respectively. We fit one-component modified
blackbody models to the integrated SED, finding a global dust mass of
8.510 M and an average temperature of 232 K. We
also fit the pixel-by-pixel SEDs to produce maps of the dust mass and
temperature. The dust mass distribution correlates with the total stellar
population as traced by the 3.6 m emission. The derived dust temperature,
which ranges from approximately 17 to 24 K, is found to correlate with the 24
m emission. Allowing the dust emissivity index to vary, we find an average
value of = 1.90.3. We confirm an inverse relation between the dust
emissivity spectral index and dust temperature, but do not observe any
variation of this relationship with vertical height from the mid-plane of the
disk. A comparison of the dust properties with the gaseous components of the
ISM reveals strong spatial correlations between the surface mass densities of
dust and the molecular hydrogen and total gas surface densities. Observed
asymmetries in the dust temperature, and the H-to-dust and total
gas-to-dust ratios hint that an enhancement in the star formation rate may be
the result of larger quantities of molecular gas available to fuel star
formation in the NE compared to the SW. Whilst the asymmetry likely arises from
dust obscuration due to the geometry of the line-of-sight projection of the
spiral arms, we cannot exclude an enhancement in the star formation rate in the

An Introduction to the Chandra Carina Complex Project
The Great Nebula in Carina provides an exceptional view into the violent
massive star formation and feedback that typifies giant HII regions and
starburst galaxies. We have mapped the Carina star-forming complex in X-rays,
using archival Chandra data and a mosaic of 20 new 60ks pointings using the
Chandra X-ray Observatory's Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer, as a testbed for
understanding recent and ongoing star formation and to probe Carina's regions
of bright diffuse X-ray emission. This study has yielded a catalog of
properties of >14,000 X-ray point sources; >9800 of them have multiwavelength
counterparts. Using Chandra's unsurpassed X-ray spatial resolution, we have
separated these point sources from the extensive, spatially-complex diffuse
emission that pervades the region; X-ray properties of this diffuse emission
suggest that it traces feedback from Carina's massive stars. In this
introductory paper, we motivate the survey design, describe the Chandra
observations, and present some simple results, providing a foundation for the
15 papers that follow in this Special Issue and that present detailed catalogs,

Detection of high-velocity material from the wind-wind collision zone of Eta Carinae across the 2009.0 periastron passage
We report near-IR spectroscopic observations of the Eta Carinae massive
binary system during 2008-2009 using VLT/CRIRES. We detect a strong, broad
absorption wing in He I 10833 extending up to -1900 km/s across the 2009.0
spectroscopic event. Archival HST/STIS ultraviolet and optical data shows a
similar high-velocity absorption (up to -2100 km/s) in the UV resonance lines
of Si IV 1394, 1403 across the 2003.5 event. UV lines from low-ionization
species, such as Si II 1527, 1533 and C II 1334, 1335, show absorption up to
-1200 km/s, indicating that the absorption with v from -1200 to -2100 km/s
originates in a region markedly faster and more ionized than the nominal wind
of the primary star. Observations obtained at the OPD/LNA during the last 4
spectroscopic cycles (1989-2009) also display high-velocity absorption in He I
10833 during periastron. Based on the OPD/LNA dataset, we determine that
material with v < -900 km/s is present in the phase range 0.976 < phi < 1.023
of the spectroscopic cycle, but absent in spectra taken at phi < 0.947 and phi
> 1.049. Therefore, we constrain the duration of the high-velocity absorption
to be 95 to 206 days (or 0.047 to 0.102 in phase). We suggest that the
high-velocity absorption originates from shocked gas in the wind-wind collision
zone, at distances of 15 to 45 AU in the line-of-sight to the primary star.
Using 3-D hydrodynamical simulations of the wind-wind collision zone, we find
that the dense high-velocity gas is in the line-of-sight to the primary star
only if the binary system is oriented in the sky so that the companion is
behind the primary star during periastron, corresponding to a longitude of
periastron of omega ~ 240 to 270 degrees. We study a possible tilt of the
orbital plane relative to the Homunculus equatorial plane and conclude that our
data are broadly consistent with orbital inclinations in the range i=40 to 60

Cold Dust but Warm Gas in the Unusual Elliptical Galaxy NGC 4125
Data from the Herschel Space Observatory have revealed an unusual elliptical galaxy, NGC 4125, which has strong and extended submillimeter emission from cold dust but only very strict upper limits to its CO and Hi emission. Depending on the dust emissivity, the total dust mass is 2-5 x 10(6) M-circle dot. While the neutral gas-to-dust mass ratio is extremely low (= 10(4) K faster than the dust is evaporated. Structured Decision-Making and Rapid Prototyping to Plan a Management Response to an Invasive Species
We developed components of a decision structure that could be used in an adaptive management framework for responding to invasion of hemlock woolly adelgid Adeleges tsugae on the Cumberland Plateau of northern Tennessee. Hemlock woolly adelgid, an invasive forest pest, was first detected in this area in 2007. We used a structured decision-making process to identify and refine the management problem, objectives, and alternative management actions, and to assess consequences and tradeoffs among selected management alternatives. We identified four fundamental objectives: 1) conserve the aquatic and terrestrial riparian conservation targets, 2) protect and preserve hemlock, 3) develop and maintain adequate budget, and 4) address public concerns. We designed two prototype responses using an iterative process. By rapidly prototyping a first solution, insights were gained and shortcomings were identified, and some of these shortcomings were incorporated and corrected in the second prototype. We found that objectives were best met when management focused on early treatment of lightly to moderately infested but relatively healthy hemlock stands with biological control agent predator beetles and insect-killing fungi. Also, depending on the cost constraint, early treatment should be coupled with silvicultural management of moderately to severely infested and declining hemlock stands to accelerate conversion to nonhemlock mature forest cover. The two most valuable contributions of the structured decision-making process were 1) clarification and expansion of our objectives, and 2) application of tools to assess tradeoffs and predict consequences of alternative actions. Predicting consequences allowed us to evaluate the influence of uncertainty on the decision. For example, we found that the expected number of mature forest stands over 30 y would be increased by 4% by resolving the uncertainty regarding predator beetle effectiveness. The adaptive management framework requires further development including identifying and evaluating uncertainty, formalizing other competing predictive models, designing a monitoring program to update the predictive models, developing a process for re-evaluating the predictive models and incorporating new management technologies, and generating support for planning and implementation
Control of primary productivity and the significance of photosynthetic bacteria in a meromictic kettle lake.
During 1986 planktonic primary production and controlling factors were investigated in a small (A0 = 11.8 · 103 m2, Zmax = 11.5 m) meromictic kettle lake (Mittlerer Buchensee). Annual phytoplankton productivity was estimated to ca 120 gC · m–2 · a–1 (1,42 tC · lake–1 · a–1). The marked thermal stratification of the lake led to irregular vertical distributions of chlorophylla concentrations (Chla) and, to a minor extent, of photosynthesis (Az). Between the depths of 0 to 6 m low Chla concentrations (< 7 mg · m–3) and comparatively high background light attenuation (kw = 0,525 m–1, 77% of total attenuation due to gelbstoff and abioseston) was found. As a consequence, light absorption by algae was low (mean value 17,4%) and self-shading was absent.
Because of the small seasonal variation of Chla concentrations, no significant correlation between Chla and areal photosynthesis (A) was observed. Only in early summer (June–July) biomass appears to influence the vertical distribution of photosynthesis on a bigger scale. Around 8 m depth, low-light adapted algae and phototrophic bacteria formed dense layers. Due to low ambient irradiances, the contribution of these organisms to total primary productivity was small. Primary production and incident irradiance were significantly correlated with each other (r2 = 0.68). Although the maximum assimilation number (Popt) showed a clear dependence upon water temperature (Q10 = 2.31), the latter was of minor importance to areal photosynthesis
Characteristic odour in the blood reveals ovarian carcinoma
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Ovarian carcinoma represents about 4% of all cancers diagnosed in women worldwide. Mortality rate is high, over 50%, mainly due to late diagnosis. Currently there are no acceptable screening techniques available, although ovarian cancer belongs to the group of malignancies for which mortality could be dramatically reduced by early diagnosis.</p> <p>In a recently published study, we clearly demonstrated that human ovarian carcinoma tissues can be characterized by a specific odour, detectable by a trained dog. Another recent study confirmed these results using an electronic nose.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In the present work, we examined whether the cancer-specific odour can also be found in the blood. Two specially trained dogs were used. Both ovarian cancer tissues and blood from patients with ovarian carcinoma were tested.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The tissue tests showed sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 95%, while the blood tests showed sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 98%.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The present study strongly suggests that the characteristic odour emitted by ovarian cancer samples is also present in blood (plasma) taken from patients with the disease. This finding opens possibilities for future screening of healthy populations for early diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma. A future challenge is to develop a sensitive electronic nose for screening of ovarian carcinoma by testing the blood/plasma to detect the disease at a stage early enough for treatment to be effective.</p
The first X-ray survey of Galactic Luminous Blue Variables
Aims: The X-ray emission of massive stars has been studied when these objects
are in their main-sequence phase, as well as in their Wolf-Rayet phase.
However, the X-ray properties of the transitional Luminous Blue Variable (LBV)
phase remain unknown. Methods: Using a dedicated but limited XMM survey as well
as archival XMM and Chandra observations, we performed the first X-ray survey
of LBVs: about half of the known LBVs or candidate LBVs are studied. Results:
Apart from the well known X-ray sources eta Car and Cyg OB2 #12, four
additional LBVs are detected in this survey, though some doubt remains on the
association with the X-ray source for two of these. For the other LBVs, upper
limits on the flux were derived, down to for
PCyg. This variety in the strength of the X-ray emission is discussed, with
