Q3Background:Associations between mental health anddermatology have generated a new branch of study calledpsychodermatology, which includes relevant conditions tothe adolescent population. However, there is limitedresearch focusing on this field and this specific population. Objective:To estimate the prevalence of dermatologicalpathologies in the Colombian adolescent population andtheir possible associations with mental health conditions. Methods:We performed a secondary analysis of theColombian National Mental Health Survey results. Arepresentative sample of the adolescent Colombian popu-lation answered questions regarding dermatological con-ditions and mental health disorders. We estimated theprevalence and evaluated associations using the chisquared independence test. Results:Of 1753 adolescents, 8.3% (CI95%=[6.8–10.1])had dermatitis or skin allergies and 4.5% (CI95%=[3.3–6.1])acne. For dermatitis, we found associations with age, ed-ucation, and family dysfunction (p-Values=0.024; <0.001;0.046 respectively). Acne was associated with age, sex, educational level, the number of social groups involved in,alcohol consumption, psychoactive substances use andprevious violent experiences (respective p-Values=0.007;0.004; 0.005; 0.036; 0.002; 0.003; 0.044). Regardingmental health, dermatological conditions were associatedwith depression, affective disorders, suicide attempt andsuicide ideation. Conclusion:Our results are the first to describe the prev-alence of these disorders in Colombia. This is an explor-atory study; nonetheless, it is of great value since it is thefirst to describe these associations in adolescents in amiddle-income country, which should be considered dur-ing clinical examinations. Further longitudinal studiesevaluating possible causal relationship between psychi-atric and dermatological conditions are fundamental toestablish causal links

The proposal and the analysis are together in the ""transmusicalidad"" category that is apply in the study of the musical format in the social life, covering dimensions of the ""sociomusical"" practices, their process, relations, the social part in the sonority, the organologic changes, the musicians, their public and other participants of the sonorous sphere in the city. Providing the recognition of consolidation of what it means to have ""asunto gaitero"" in Bogotá city, that places a ""gaitero"" (person who plays ""gaita""), a type of ""gaita"" and a specific sound through the history, as a result of a conversation of the migrations of musical and cultural legacies between Montes de Maria and Bogotá."Sociólogo (a)Pregrad

Cell Biology of Virus Infection. The Role of Cytoskeletal Dynamics Integrity in the Effectiveness of Dengue Virus Infection

    Get PDF
The cell biology of viral infections is the focus of this research, in which the role of the cytoskeleton in dengue virus (DENV) replication in cell cultures was evaluated by means of Nocodazole and Cytochalasin D treatments before and after of DENV infection. The potential contribution of cytoskeleton elements with/without the treatment of depolymerizing agents was evidenced and quantified by the subcellular distribution of viral proteins, virions produced, and viral protein quantification. The cytoskeleton is involved in DENV replication because treatments with actin microfilaments and microtubule depolymerizing agents in non-cytotoxic concentrations, affected DENV2 replication in Vero cells and decreased both the viral protein expression and infectious virion production, when compared with non-treated cells. The actin and microtubules are partly involved in DENV2 replication, since the treatment does not completely blocked viral replication, suggesting that these components are necessary but not sufficient alone for DENV2 replication in Vero cells. The structural and functional role of actin and the microtubules in replication are postulated here, opening new perspectives for understanding the architecture of the replicative complex and viral morphogenesis processes, due to the role of the cytoskeleton in the organization, recruitment, and function of the cellular elements necessary for the assembly of viral factories

Fall risk in the aging population: fall prevention using smartphones technology and multiscale sample entropy

Falls are an important aspect of older people's health because they trigger major injuries and even death in one-third of fallen patients, making them  a major public health problem. Given the risk of physical and psychological injury, if serious injuries occur as a result of a fall, prevention is an important consideration in today's health care landscape, where the population is predominantly adult world wide. This paper presents the applicability ofa simple technique of analysis of gait signals capturedby mobile devices with the objective to the generation of early warnings on the risk of falls in older adults, which correlates with subjective scales. The technique is tested in a population of patients showing results of the significant risk of falls inpatients that the subjective scales could not detect, demonstrating that mobile devices and signal processing can become important tools in the service of elderly care in fall risk prevention

Multi-Sensor Arrays for Online Monitoring of Cell Dynamics in in vitro Studies with Choroid Plexus Epithelial Cells

Sensors and multi-sensor arrays are the basis of new technologies for the non-label monitoring of cell activity. In this paper we show that choroid plexus cells can be cultured on silicon chips and that sensors register in real time changes in their activity, constituting an interesting experimental paradigm for cell biology and medical research. To validate the signals recorded (metabolism = peri-cellular acidification, oxygen consumption = respiration; impedance = adhesion, cell shape and motility) we performed experiments with compounds that act in a well-known way on cells, influencing these parameters. Our in vitro model demonstrates the advantages of multi-sensor arrays in assessment and experimental characterization of dynamic cellular events—in this case in choroid plexus functions, however with applicability to other cell types as well
