Regional metacommunities in two coastal systems: spatial structure and drivers of plant assemblages
Aim Biogeographical patterns in metacommunities are still poorly understood, and different processes are expected to occur in different habitats. We analysed the regional plant metacommunities of coastal habitats to test whether (1) the influence of space and climate differs between two habitats differentiated along the seashoreâinland gradient, and (2) regional variation in species composition of these habitats can be ascribed to different metacommunity paradigms.
Location The entire coast of the Iberian Peninsula, south-western Europe.
Methods We collected data on the plant species composition of coastal sites on sand dunes across 3000 km of coastline. The sites were classified into two habitats corresponding to shifting and stable sand dunes, and divided into three distinct geographical regions: Cantabrian, Atlantic and Mediterranean. We assessed the geographical structure of the species composition using ordination, estimates of species turnover and spatial autocorrelation. We then used multivariate models and variation partitioning to test the influence of climatic and spatial effects. Analyses were conducted for the whole data set and the geographical subsets.
Results Metacommunities from shifting and stable dunes showed similar spa- tial patterns, with the highest species turnover occurring in the Mediterranean region. Similarities between communities that were nearer each other (typically < 100 km) were weaker in shifting than in stable dunes, although the distance decay for sites that were further apart was similar in both habitats. Variation in species composition in shifting dunes was mainly explained by distance and climate, while in stable dunes the effect of climate was clearly dominant. The observed differences were relatively consistent across geographical regions.
Main conclusions Distinct processes structure the metacommunities in two dune habitats differentiated along the seashoreâinland gradient. Communities of shifting dunes seem to be structured by an interplay of neutral or patch-dynamic processes and to a lesser degree by species sorting. In contrast, communities of stable dunes are mainly governed by species sorting in response to climatic gradi- ents. These results highlight the importance of differentiating habitats according to local ecological factors when analysing regional patterns in metacommunities
Plant communities of Italy. The vegetation prodrome
The Vegetation Prodrome of Italy was promoted in 2012 by the Italian "Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea Protection", in collaboration with the "Italian Society of Botany", to provide a comprehensive and systematic catalogue and description of Italian plant communities. The Prodrome that is presented in this paper is the first full organic synthesis of the vegetation of Italy at the alliance syntaxonomic level. It fulfils several needs, the main one being a unified and comprehensive national framework that may make an important contribution to the definition of the European Vegetation Prodrome. Syntaxonomy, as well as taxonomy, is sometimes based on considerations that may in part diverge: several authors tend to favour models that are divisive or aggregative to a greater or lesser extent in terms of flora, biogeography and ecology. These different points of view stimulate the scientific debate and allow the adoption of a framework that is more widely supported. The Prodrome includes 75 classes, 2 subclasses, 175 orders, 6 suborders and 393 alliances. The classes were grouped into nine broad categories according to structural, physiognomic and synecological elements rather than to syntaxonomic criteria. The rank, full valid name, any synonymies and incorrect names are provided for each syntaxon. The short declaration highlights the physiognomy, synecology, syndynamics and distribution of the plant communities that belong to the syntaxon. The Prodrome of the Italian Vegetation is linked to the European Strategy for Biodiversity, the European Habitats Directive and the European Working Groups related to the ecosystems and their services. In addition to basic applications, the Prodrome can be used as a framework for scientific research related to the investigation of the relationships between plant communities and the environmental factors that influence their composition and distribution
A global view on the riparian forests with Salix neotricha and Populus alba in the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain)
Forests dominated by Salix neotricha, and Populus alba found along the mesoeutrophic rivers in the Iberian Peninsula, were
studied. We discuss the floristic circumscription, chorology, and community segregation based on the available releveÂŽs of all
Iberian riparian communities included in Populenion albae. Eleven formerly described communities were analyzed and due to
original floristic combination, habitat features, and biogeographic scope, a new willow and poplar forest type is proposed
within a well-defined biogeographical unit (Sadensean-Dividing Portuguese Subprovince): Clematido campaniflorae-
Salicetum neotrichae. This syntaxon is found under a semi-hyperoceanic thermomediterranean to lower mesomediterranean,
subhumid to humid bioclimate. Cluster analysis including all Iberian communities of Populenion albae shows a clear floristic
segregation within the suballiance and confirms the originality of the new association. Furthermore, chemical characteristics
of the water along some of the Portuguese watercourses with Populenion albae were studied and compared to the oligotrophic
rivers occupied by Osmundo-Alnion communities. This study suggests that floristic separation between the communities of
Populenion and Osmundo-Alnion is accompanied by a differentiation of the water trophic level
A formal classification of the Lygeum spartum vegetation of the Mediterranean Region
Aims We examined local and regional contribution on the grasslands dominated by Lygeum spartum from Southern Europe and North Africa to produce a formalised classification of this vegetation and to identify main factors driving its plant species composition. Location Mediterranean Basin and Iberian Peninsula. Methods We used a dataset of 728 relevĂ©s, which were resampled to reduce unbalanced sampling effort, resulting in a dataset of 568 relevĂ©s and 846 taxa. We classified the plots by TWINSPAN, interpreted the resulting pools, and used them to develop formal definitions of phytosociological alliances characterised by L. spartum vegetation. The definitions were included in an expert system to assist automatic vegetation classification. We related the alliances to climatic factors and described their biogeographical features and ecological preferences. The floristic relationships between these alliances were analysed and visualised using distanceâbased redundancy analysis. Results We defined eleven alliances of L. spartum vegetation, including the newly described Launaeo laniferaeâLygeion sparti from SW Morocco and the Noaeo mucronataeâLygeion sparti from the Algerian highlands and NE Morocco. Biogeographical, climatic, and edaphic factors were revealed as putatively driving the differentiation between the alliances. The vegetation of clayey slopes and inland salt basins displayed higher variability in comparison with those of coastal salt marshes. Main conclusions The most comprehensive formal classification, accompanied by an expert system, of the L. spartum vegetation was formulated. The expert system, containing the formal definitions of the phytosociological alliances, will assist in identification of syntaxonomic position of new datasets
The influence of religious identity and socio-economic status on diet over time, an example from medieval France
In Southern France as in other parts of Europe, significant changes occurred in settlement patterns between the end of Antiquity and the beginning of the Middle Ages. Small communities gathered to form, by the tenth century, villages organized around a church. This development was the result of a new social and agrarian organization. Its impact on lifestyles and, more precisely, on diet is still poorly understood. The analysis of carbon and nitrogen isotopes in bone collagen from the inhabitants of the well-preserved medieval rural site Missignac-Saint Gilles le Vieux (fifth to thirteenth centuries, Gard, France) provides insight into their dietary practices and enables a discussion about its transformation over time. A sample of 152 adult individuals dated from 675 to 1175 AD (75 females, 77 males) and 75 specimens from 16 non-human species were analyzed. Results show the exploitation of freshwater, marine, and terrestrial ecosystems as well as various breeding practices specific to each species. The use of both C4 and halophyte plants for feeding domestic animals was also observed. Concerning human dietary practices, a change seemed to occur at the beginning of the tenth century with an increase of ÎŽ15N values and a decrease of ÎŽ13C values. This corresponds to the introduction of a significant amount of freshwater resources into the diet and could be related to the evolution of the Catholic doctrine. A concomitant diversification of access to individual food resources was also observed, probably linked to the increased diversity of practice inside a population otherwise perceived as one community
Restoration of european habitats in mainland, Portugal, using commercial seed mixtures. Considerations for its management and conservation
Permanent mountain pastures include meadows and other perennial pastures of high ecological,
economic, cultural and scenic value. Increasing desertification limits the maintenance and conservation
of its biodiversity and the associated landscape mosaic. A restoration experiment in permanent high
altitude grasslands in Beira Alta (Centre East (CE) mainland Portugal) was made, by sowing adequate
cultivars of existing grass and legume species. The main objectives addressed were: (1) comparison of
floristic composition between reference communities included in the previous habitats and the improved
communities; (2) evaluation of the success of sowing adequate cultivars of autochthonous species; (3)
evaluation of the establishment of target species in terms of the maintenance of floristic composition of
reference. The experiment was carried out in 2014 on nine farms situated in Beira Alta (Guarda District)
and the phytosociological method was applied in the floristic surveys. The sown species with highest
percentage of soil cover were Trifolium subterraneum, Lolium multiflorum, Ornithopus sativus and Trifolium
vesiculosum. In the priority habitat 6220 it was observed a re-establishment of many species in their
original composition and a high cover of several cultivars of Trifolium subterraneum. These results highlight

A study of the dry forest communities in the Dominican Republic
This paper is a floristic and phytosociological study of the dry forest communities of the Dominican Republic. A total of 69 relevĂ©s in dry forest biotopes were carried out. The samples were subsequently subjected to Detrended Correspondence Analysis for the determination and study of possible groupings. The study does not cover tree formations growing on serpentines, nor the so-called semideciduous forests, peculiar to areas with higher rainfall. A total of nine phytocoenoses were identified. The most significant results led to the description of six new phytosociological associations: Simaroubetum berteroani (thorny dry forest on coastal dunes), Phyllostylo rhamnoidis-Prosopidetum juliflorae (southern Dominican disturbed dry forest), Consoleo moniliformis-Camerarietum linearifoliae (dry forest on hard limestones), Lemaireocereo hystricis-Prosopidetum juliflorae (northern Dominican disturbed dry forest), Lycio americani-Prosopidetum juliflorae (disturbed dry forest on saline soils) and Guettardo ellipticae-Guapiretum discoloris (dry forest on flat-topped hillocks in Montecristi). This is an important step forward in the phytosociological and floristic studies of the Caribbean territories.Este trabalho apresenta um estudo florĂstico e fitossociolĂłgico das comunidades de florestas secas da RepĂșblica Dominicana. Um total de 69 amostras foram obtidas pelo mĂ©todo relevĂ© em biĂłtopos florestais secos. The effect of experimental disturbances
on the dynamics of a shrub community was studied
on a âMontadoâ ecosystem, in southern Portugal. The
evolution of the community physiognomy, composition
and diversity were monitored after shrub clearing
followed by biomass removal, deposition on soil
surface and incorporation with the soil, over a 9-year
period. Maximum shrub density was recorded in the
first year after the disturbances, excepting in mulched
plots which showed the greatest number of individuals
1 year later. The increment of shrub leaf biomass
was very fast in the first 3 years, whereas wood
production was slower but occurred along the whole
study period. At the end of the study, leaf and wood
biomass was still significantly lower than in the predisturbance
situation. The variation pattern of leaf
area index was similar to that of leaf biomass. The
evolution of total plant cover and diversity was
similar across treatments. The highest species richness
and diversity were recorded 2 years after
cutting, decreasing afterwards with the increasing
dominance of shrubs. Thus it seems likely that,
although a 9 year period is too short for these
communities to reach steady equilibrium, they are
very resistant and resilient to disturbances, as regeneration
was fast and vegetation dynamics was not
influenced by differences among treatments. We can
conclude that shrub clearing promotes biodiversity
and the time of permanence of shrub patches depends
on the particular goal we want to achieve
