    Texture analysis in an apple progeny through instrumental, sensory and histological phenotyping

    Phenotypic analysis of texture traits was performed in an apple progeny by three complementary approaches: two classical instrumental measurements (compression and penetrometry), sensory assessment and histological screening. The progeny was composed of 141 individuals harvested over 2 years. Sensory and instrumental texture were assessed at harvest and after 2 and 4 months of cold storage. Histological screening was performed by combining macro-vision of outer parenchyma sections and image analysis on fruits after 2 months storage. Harvest year was observed to have a major impact on texture phenotypes followed by storage and genetic factors. Principal component analysis of data from the instrumental texture evaluations showed that the two methods complemented each other in characterizing the texture of the apple progeny. Compression parameters correlated better than penetrometry variables with sensory descriptors related to crispness, firmness, and graininess. Cell size distribution differentiated individuals in the apple progeny. It correlated with instrumental texture analyses and with juiciness perception. All measured texture related traits showed that they were all under genetic control with high heritability values. Higher values were obtained for fruits after 2 months storage. These results provide ground for future search of new apple texture QTLs

    Variability of cell wall polysaccharides composition and hemicellulose enzymatic profile in an apple progeny

    The genetic variability of apple cell walls polysaccharides chemical composition and structure was assessed in a progeny of 141 individuals harvested over 2 years. The variability of the hemicelluloses oligosaccharides released by glucanase was analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS. The genetic contribution was distinguished from harvest year as well as from parental crossing patterns and scab resistance selection. Results showed that harvest year had a major impact on cell wall polysaccharide composition and structure. Within each harvest, genetic effect impact more significantly cell wall polysaccharide chemistry than does reciprocal crossing or early scab selection. Uronic acids, glucose, galactose and xylose contents as well as some glucomannan and xyloglucan structures have a high heritability. This first cell wall chemotyping of an apple progeny opens the way for future searches of genetic markers for the chemical variability of cell wall polysaccharides

    Methodology for modeling the disinfection efficiency of fresh-cut leafy vegetables wash water applied on peracetic acid combined with lactic acid

    A methodology to i) assess the feasibility of water disinfection in fresh-cut leafy greens wash water and ii) to compare the disinfectant efficiency of water disinfectants was defined and applied for a combination of peracetic acid (PAA) and lactic acid (LA) and comparison with free chlorine was made. Standardized process water, a watery suspension of iceberg lettuce, was used for the experiments. First, the combination of PAA + LA was evaluated for water recycling. In this case disinfectant was added to standardized process water inoculated with Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157 (6 log CFU/mL). Regression models were constructed based on the batch inactivation data and validated in industrial process water obtained from fresh-cut leafy green processing plants. The UV254(F) was the best indicator for PAA decay and as such for the E. coli O157 inactivation with PAA + LA. The disinfection efficiency of PAA + LA increased with decreasing pH. Furthermore, PAA + LA efficacy was assessed as a process water disinfectant to be used within the washing tank, using a dynamic washing process with continuous influx of E. coli O157 and organic matter in the washing tank. The process water contamination in the dynamic process was adequately estimated by the developed model that assumed that knowledge of the disinfectant residual was sufficient to estimate the microbial contamination, regardless the physicochemical load. Based on the obtained results, PAA + LA seems to be better suited than chlorine for disinfecting process wash water with a high organic load but a higher disinfectant residual is necessary due to the slower E. coli O157 inactivation kinetics when compared to chlorine.Ciencias de la Alimentació

Las propuestas curriculares no han sido suficientemente precisas en cuanto a la vinculación del aprendizaje al propio entorno, han confundido con frecuencia educación en el medio con educación ambiental, y en ningún caso se han contemplado los requisitos necasarios para implementarla. Los grupos de trabajo, surgidos, como el nuestro, con la aparición de los servicios de perfeccionamiento del profesorado, tratarón de interpretar el espíritu de los objetivos curriculares y llevarlos a la práctica. La descripción de nuestra propuesta y su desarrollo durante los últimos veinticinco años es el objeto de esta comunicación

    Primeval very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs - III. The halo transitional brown dwarfs

All rights reserved.We report the discovery of an esdL3 subdwarf, ULAS J020858.62+020657.0 and a usdL4.5 subdwarf, ULAS J230711.01+014447.1. They were identified as L subdwarfs by optical spectra obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias, and followed up by optical to near infrared spectroscopy with the Very Large Telescope. We also obtained an optical to near infrared spectrum of a previously known L subdwarf, ULAS J135058.85+081506.8, and re-classified it as a usdL3 subdwarf. These three objects all have typical halo kinematics. They have TeffT_{\rm eff} around 2050-2250 K, -1.8 \leq [Fe/H] \leq -1.5, and mass around 0.0822-0.0833 M_{\odot}, according to model spectral fitting and evolutionary models. These sources are likely halo transitional brown dwarfs with unsteady hydrogen fusions, as their masses are just below the hydrogen-burning minimum mass, which is \sim 0.0845 M_{\odot} at [Fe/H] = -1.6 and \sim 0.0855 M_{\odot} at [Fe/H] = -1.8. Including these, there are now nine objects in the `halo brown dwarf transition zone', which is a `substellar subdwarf gap' spans a wide temperature range within a narrow mass range of the substellar population.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Estudio físico, químico y microestructural de geopolímeros base ceniza volante

    En este trabajo se analizó el comportamiento físico, químico y microestructural de la ceniza volante activada alcalinamente. Para ello fueron utilizados diferentes tamaños de partícula de ceniza volante (CV), obtenidos por molienda manual, mezcladas con NaOH y curadas durante 7, 14 y 28 días. Las técnicas de caracterización utilizadas fueron: TGA, FTIR, MEB, adsorción física de gases y pruebas de resistencia a compresión, además del software NIVision Assistant. Los resultados muestran que la disminución de tamaño de partículas, favoreció la geopolimerización del gel N-A-S-H y mejoró las propiedades cementantes en los geopolímeros, logrando resistencias a compresión hasta de 23 MPa, por otro lado, se indica mediante análisis de imagen, que los porcentajes de porosidad en cada uno de los morteros evaluados disminuyen conforme se alejan de la zona de transición interfacial (ZTI), los cuales se corroboran con los resultados de porosimetría. (ANGLÈS) In this paper was analyzed the physical, chemical and microstructural behavior of alkali activated fly ash. This comparison was used with different particle sizes of fly ash (CV), obtained by manual milling, mixed with NaOH and cured for 7, 14 and 28 days. The characterization techniques used: TGA, FTIR, SEM, physical adsorption of gases and compressive strength tests, as well NIVision Assistant software. The results show that decreasing particle size favored NASH gel Geopolymerization and improved cementitious properties in geopolymer, achieving compressive strengths up to 23 MPa.     Thoracic aortic aneurysm and atrial fibrillation: clinical associations with the risk of stroke from a global federated health network analysis

    Background: An association with aortic aneurysm has been reported among patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The aims of this study were to investigate the prevalence of thoracic aorta aneurysm (TAA) among patients with AF and to assess whether the co-presence of TAA is associated with a higher risk of adverse clinical outcomes. Methods and results: Using TriNetX, a global federated health research network of anonymised electronic medical records, all adult patients with AF, were categorised into two groups based on the presence of AF and TAA or AF alone. Between 1 January 2017 and 1 January 2019, 874,212 people aged ≥ 18 years with AF were identified. Of these 17,806 (2.04%) had a TAA. After propensity score matching (PSM), 17,805 patients were included in each of the two cohorts. During the 3 years of follow-up, 3079 (17.3%) AF patients with TAA and 2772 (15.6%) patients with AF alone, developed an ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). The risk of ischemic stroke/TIA was significantly higher in patients with AF and TAA (HR 1.09, 95% CI 1.04–1.15; log-rank p value < 0.001) The risk of major bleeding was higher in patients with AF and TAA (OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.01–1.14), but not significant in time-dependent analysis (HR 1.04, 95% CI 0.98–1.10; log-rank p value = 0.187), Conclusion: This retrospective analysis reports a clinical concomitance of the two medical conditions, and shows in a PSM analysis an increased risk of ischemic events in patients affected by TAA and AF compared to AF alone

    Cerebrovascular, Cognitive and Cardiac Benefits of SGLT2 Inhibitors Therapy in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Results from a Global Federated Health Network Analysis

    Background: Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are effective anti-diabetic drugs improving cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. This study investigated cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and cognitive outcomes of SGLT2i therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and T2DM. Methods: Observational study using TriNetX, a global health research network of anonymised electronic medical records from real-world patients between January 2018 and December 2019. The network includes healthcare organisations globally but predominately in the United States. AF patients (ICD-10-CM code: I48) with T2DM were divided according to SGLT2i use or not, and balanced using propensity score matching (PSM). Patients were followed-up for 3-years. The primary endpoints were ischaemic stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA), intracranial haemorrhage (ICH), and incident dementia. Secondary endpoints were incident heart failure and mortality. Results: We identified 89,356 AF patients with T2DM of which 5061 (5.7%) were taking a SGLT2i. After PSM, 5049 patients (mean age 66.7 ± 10.6 years; 28.9% female) were included in each group. At 3-years follow-up, the risk of ischaemic stroke/TIA was higher in patients not receiving SGLT2i (HR 1.12, 95% CI 1.01–1.24) and for ICH (HR 1.57, 95% CI 1.25–1.99) and incident dementia (HR 1.66, 95% CI 1.30–2.12). Incident heart failure (HR 1.50, 95% CI 1.34–1.68) and mortality (HR 1.77, 95% CI 1.58–1.99) risks were increased in AF patients not receiving SGLT2i. Conclusions: In our large ‘real world’ analysis of patients with concomitant AF and T2DM, SGLT2i reduced the risk of cerebrovascular events, incident dementia, heart failure and death

    From national monopoly to Multinational Corporation: how regulation shaped the road towards telecommunications internationalization

    One of the consequences of major regulatory reform of the telecommunications sector from the end of the 1970s – particularly, privatization, liberalization and deregulation – was the establishment of a new business environment which permitted former national telecommunications monopolies to expand abroad. From the 1990s, a number of these firms, particularly those based in Europe, joined the rankings of the world’s leading Multinational Corporations. Their internationalization was uneven, however: while some firms internationalised strongly, others ventured abroad much slower. This article explores how the regulatory framework within which telecommunications incumbents evolved over the long-term shaped their subsequent, uneven, paths to internationalization. Two case studies representing ´maximum variation´ are selected: Telefónica, whose early and unrelenting expansion transformed it into one of the world’s most international of Multinational Corporations, and BT, whose overseas ventures failed and, with eroding domestic market share, forced the firm to partially retreat, becoming the least international of the large European incumbents.
