    Indoor application of emerging photovoltaics—progress, challenges and perspectives

    The development of solution-processed photovoltaic (PV) devices for indoor applications has recently attracted widespread attention owing to their outstanding potential in harvesting energy efficiently for low-power-consumption electronic devices, such as wireless sensors and internet of things (IoT). In particular, organic PVs (OPVs), perovskite PVs (PPVs) and quantum dot PVs (QDPVs) are among the most promising emerging photovoltaic technologies that have already demonstrated strong commercialisation potential for this new market, owing to their excellent yet highly tuneable optoelectronic properties to meet the demands for specific applications. In this review, we summarise the recent progress in the development of OPVs, PPVs and QDPVs for indoor applications, showing the rapid advances in their device performance in conjunction with highly diverse materials and device designs, including semi-transparent, flexible and large-area devices. The remaining challenges of these emerging indoor PV technologies that need to be urgently addressed toward their commercialisation, including, in particular, their limited stability and high ecotoxicity, will be discussed in detail. Potential strategies to address these challenges will also be proposed

    The Distribution and Origin of Carbonate Cements in Deep-Buried Sandstones in the Central Junggar Basin, Northwest China

    Extremely high porosities and permeabilities are commonly discovered in the sandstones of the Xishanyao Formation in the central Junggar Basin with the burial depth greater than 5500 m, from which hydrocarbons are currently being produced. High content of carbonate cements (up to 20%) is also observed in a similar depth range. Our study aimed to improve our understanding on the origin of carbonate cements in the Xishanyao Formation, in order to provide insights into the existence of high porosity sandstones at greater depths. Integrated analyses including petrographic analysis, isotopic analysis, fluid-inclusion, and core analysis were applied to investigate the distribution and origin of carbonate cements and the influence of high fluid pressure on reservoir quality. Textural evidences demonstrate that there are two generations of carbonate cements, precipitated at the temperature of 90°C and 120°C, respectively. The carbonate cements with low ήCPDB13 ranging from −19.07 to -8.95‰ dominantly occurred near the overpressure surface and especially accumulated at approximately 100 m below the surface. Our interpretation is that high content of carbonate cements is significantly influenced by early carbonate cements dissolution and migration under overpressure.     Conjugation of soy protein isolate (SPI) with pectin by ultrasound treatment

    peer-reviewedThe Maillard reaction in the aqueous system with and without ultrasound treatment was used to prepare conjugates between soy protein isolate (SPI) and citrus pectin (CP)/apple pectin (AP). Ultrasound treatment at a power of 450 W and a temperature of 70 °C significantly accelerated the conjugation processes between SPI and pectin samples and led to much greater grafting extents compared to the traditional wet heating. A higher degree of graft of the SPI-CP conjugates was achieved at a shorter ultrasound duration compared to the SPI-AP conjugates, possibly attributed to the larger molecular weight and the more flexible structure of AP. SDS-PAGE analysis confirmed the formation of SPI-pectin conjugates. Analysis of the protein secondary and tertiary structures suggested that the attachment of CP or AP changed the spatial conformation of SPI and led to a looser protein structure. In addition to the grafting process, ultrasound was also observed to play a marked role in unfolding the SPI resulting in more favorable structures for the Maillard reaction. Furthermore, the application of ultrasound to the conjugation process significantly increased the surface hydrophobicity and emulsifying properties of both conjugates, indicating that ultrasound can be a desirable method for protein-polysaccharide conjugation.National Natural Science Foundation of Chin

    The rare top quark decays t→cVt\to cV in the topcolor-assisted technicolor model

    We consider the rare top quark decays in the framework of topcolor-assisted technicolor (TC2) model. We find that the contributions of top-pions and top-Higgs predicted by the TC2 model can enhance the SM branching ratios by as much as 6-9 orders of magnitude. i.e., in the most case, the orders of magnitude of branching ratios are Br(t→cg)∌10−5Br(t\to c g)\sim 10^{-5}, Br(t→cZ)∌10−5Br(t\to c Z)\sim 10^{-5}, Br(t→cÎł)∌10−7Br(t\to c \gamma)\sim 10^{-7}. With the reasonable values of the parameters in TC2 model, such rare top quark decays may be testable in the future experiments. So, rare top quark decays provide us a unique way to test TC2 model.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    Genome sequences reveal global dispersal routes and suggest convergent genetic adaptations in seahorse evolution

    Seahorses have a circum-global distribution in tropical to temperate coastal waters. Yet, seahorses show many adaptations for a sedentary, cryptic lifestyle: they require specific habitats, such as seagrass, kelp or coral reefs, lack pelvic and caudal fins, and give birth to directly developed offspring without pronounced pelagic larval stage, rendering long-range dispersal by conventional means inefficient. Here we investigate seahorses’ worldwide dispersal and biogeographic patterns based on a de novo genome assembly of Hippocampus erectus as well as 358 re-sequenced genomes from 21 species. Seahorses evolved in the late Oligocene and subsequent circum-global colonization routes are identified and linked to changing dynamics in ocean currents and paleo-temporal seaway openings. Furthermore, the genetic basis of the recurring “bony spines” adaptive phenotype is linked to independent substitutions in a key developmental gene. Analyses thus suggest that rafting via ocean currents compensates for poor dispersal and rapid adaptation facilitates colonizing new habitats.Fil: Chunyan, Li.     Molecular Characterization of a Fus3/Kss1 Type MAPK from Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, PsMAPK1

    Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst) is an obligate biotrophic fungus that causes the destructive wheat stripe rust disease worldwide. Due to the lack of reliable transformation and gene disruption method, knowledge about the function of Pst genes involved in pathogenesis is limited. Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) genes have been shown in a number of plant pathogenic fungi to play critical roles in regulating various infection processes. In the present study, we identified and characterized the first MAPK gene PsMAPK1 in Pst. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that PsMAPK1 is a YERK1 MAP kinase belonging to the Fus3/Kss1 class. Single nucleotide polymerphisms (SNPs) and insertion/deletion were detected in the coding region of PsMAPK1 among six Pst isolates. Real-time RT-PCR analyses revealed that PsMAPK1 expression was induced at early infection stages and peaked during haustorium formation. When expressed in Fusarium graminearum, PsMAPK1 partially rescued the map1 mutant in vegetative growth and pathogenicity. It also partially complemented the defects of the Magnaporthe oryzae pmk1 mutant in appressorium formation and plant infection. These results suggest that F. graminearum and M. oryzae can be used as surrogate systems for functional analysis of well-conserved Pst genes and PsMAPK1 may play a role in the regulation of plant penetration and infectious growth in Pst

    MUSiC : a model-unspecific search for new physics in proton-proton collisions at root s=13TeV

    Results of the Model Unspecific Search in CMS (MUSiC), using proton-proton collision data recorded at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1), are presented. The MUSiC analysis searches for anomalies that could be signatures of physics beyond the standard model. The analysis is based on the comparison of observed data with the standard model prediction, as determined from simulation, in several hundred final states and multiple kinematic distributions. Events containing at least one electron or muon are classified based on their final state topology, and an automated search algorithm surveys the observed data for deviations from the prediction. The sensitivity of the search is validated using multiple methods. No significant deviations from the predictions have been observed. For a wide range of final state topologies, agreement is found between the data and the standard model simulation. This analysis complements dedicated search analyses by significantly expanding the range of final states covered using a model independent approach with the largest data set to date to probe phase space regions beyond the reach of previous general searches.Peer reviewe

    Measurement of prompt open-charm production cross sections in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    The production cross sections for prompt open-charm mesons in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV are reported. The measurement is performed using a data sample collected by the CMS experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 29 nb(-1). The differential production cross sections of the D*(+/-), D-+/-, and D-0 ((D) over bar (0)) mesons are presented in ranges of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity 4 < p(T) < 100 GeV and vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.1, respectively. The results are compared to several theoretical calculations and to previous measurements.Peer reviewe
