A weakly stable algorithm for general Toeplitz systems
We show that a fast algorithm for the QR factorization of a Toeplitz or
Hankel matrix A is weakly stable in the sense that R^T.R is close to A^T.A.
Thus, when the algorithm is used to solve the semi-normal equations R^T.Rx =
A^Tb, we obtain a weakly stable method for the solution of a nonsingular
Toeplitz or Hankel linear system Ax = b. The algorithm also applies to the

A QCQP Approach to Triangulation
Triangulation of a three-dimensional point from at least two noisy 2-D images
can be formulated as a quadratically constrained quadratic program. We propose
an algorithm to extract candidate solutions to this problem from its
semidefinite programming relaxations. We then describe a sufficient condition
and a polynomial time test for certifying when such a solution is optimal. This
test has no false positives. Experiments indicate that false negatives are
rare, and the algorithm has excellent performance in practice. We explain this
phenomenon in terms of the geometry of the triangulation problem.Comment: 14 pages, to appear in the proceedings of the 12th European

Going chiral: overlap versus twisted mass fermions
We compare the behavior of overlap fermions, which are chirally invariant,
and of Wilson twisted mass fermions at full twist in the approach to the chiral
limit. Our quenched simulations reveal that with both formulations of lattice
fermions pion masses of O(250 MeV) can be reached in practical applications.
Our comparison is done at a fixed value of the lattice spacing a=0.123 fm. A
number of quantities are measured such as hadron masses, pseudoscalar decay
constants and quark masses obtained from Ward identities. We also determine the
axial vector renormalization constants in the case of overlap fermions.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figure
First-principles study of the polar O-terminated ZnO surface in thermodynamic equilibrium with oxygen and hydrogen
Using density-functional theory in combination with a thermodynamic formalism
we calculate the relative stability of various structural models of the polar
O-terminated (000-1)-O surface of ZnO. Model surfaces with different
concentrations of oxygen vacancies and hydrogen adatoms are considered.
Assuming that the surfaces are in thermodynamic equilibrium with an O2 and H2
gas phase we determine a phase diagram of the lowest-energy surface structures.
For a wide range of temperatures and pressures we find that hydrogen will be
adsorbed at the surface, preferentially with a coverage of 1/2 monolayer. At
high temperatures and low pressures the hydrogen can be removed and a structure
with 1/4 of the surface oxygen atoms missing becomes the most stable one. The
clean, defect-free surface can only exist in an oxygen-rich environment with a
very low hydrogen partial pressure. However, since we find that the
dissociative adsorption of molecular hydrogen and water (if also the
Zn-terminated surface is present) is energetically very preferable, it is very
unlikely that a clean, defect-free (000-1)-O surface can be observed in

Materializing digital collecting: an extended view of digital materiality
If digital objects are abundant and ubiquitous, why should consumers pay for, much less collect them? The qualities of digital code present numerous challenges for collecting, yet digital collecting can and does occur. We explore the role of companies in constructing digital consumption objects that encourage and support collecting behaviours, identifying material configuration techniques that materialise these objects as elusive and authentic. Such techniques, we argue, may facilitate those pleasures of collecting otherwise absent in the digital realm. We extend theories of collecting by highlighting the role of objects and the companies that construct them in materialising digital collecting. More broadly, we extend theories of digital materiality by highlighting processes of digital material configuration that occur in the pre-objectification phase of materialisation, acknowledging the role of marketing and design in shaping the qualities exhibited by digital consumption objects and consequently related consumption behaviours and experiences
Measurement of Exclusive rho+rho- Production in Mid-Virtuality Two-Photon Interactions and Study of the gamma gamma* -> rho rho Process at LEP
Exclusive rho+rho- production in two-photon collisions between a quasi-real
photon, gamma, and a mid-virtuality photon, gamma*, is studied with data
collected at LEP at centre-of-mass energies root(s)=183-209GeV with a total
integrated luminosity of 684.8pb^-1. The cross section of the gamma gamma* ->
rho+ rho- process is determined as a function of the photon virtuality, Q^2,
and the two-photon centre-of-mass energy, W_gg, in the kinematic region:
0.2GeV^2 < Q^2 <0.85GeV^2 and 1.1GeV < W_gg < 3GeV. These results, together
with previous L3 measurements of rho0 rho0 and rho+ rho- production, allow a
study of the gamma gamma* -> rho rho process over the Q^2-region 0.2GeV^2 < Q^2
< 30 GeV^2
Search for single top quarks in the tau+jets channel using 4.8 fb of collision data
We present the first direct search for single top quark production using tau
leptons. The search is based on 4.8 fb of integrated luminosity
collected in collisions at =1.96 TeV with the D0 detector
at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with a final state
including an isolated tau lepton, missing transverse energy, two or three jets,
one or two of them tagged. We use a multivariate technique to discriminate
signal from background. The number of events observed in data in this final
state is consistent with the signal plus background expectation. We set in the
tau+jets channel an upper limit on the single top quark cross section of
\TauLimObs pb at the 95% C.L. This measurement allows a gain of 4% in expected
sensitivity for the observation of single top production when combining it with
electron+jets and muon+jets channels already published by the D0 collaboration
with 2.3 fb of data. We measure a combined cross section of
\SuperCombineXSall pb, which is the most precise measurement to date.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
