Polysomnographic evaluation of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in children, before and after adenotonsillectomy
Introduction: In the last years the Obstructive Sleep Apnea/Hypopnea Syndrome (OSAHS) has much interested because it has not been completed established. Many criteria defined for OSAS in adults and children are different. We know that patient's clinical story is not sufficient for the diagnosis of OSAHS. In childhood, the most common cause of OSAHS is adenotonsillar hypertrophy, clinically characterised by snoring, apnea episodes, restless sleep, mouth breathing and daytime somnolence. Aim: This study has the purpose of comprovating, by objective way, the OSAS improving in children who underwent adenotonsillectomy. Study design: Clinical prospective. Material and method: For that, 23 children, among 2 and 13 years old, with adenotonsillar hypertrophy, were analysed. After endoscopy and polysomnography, they were submitted to adenotonsillectomy. Results: The polysomnography was repeated 2 months after surgery. The polysomnographic findings were compared through statistic study. Conclusion: All the patients had an important improve after adenotonsillectomy. Only two children (8.69%) persisted with light OSAHS, but they had moderate and important OSAHS before. We concluded that OSAHS is a precise indication for adenotonsillectomy in children.Introdução: Nos últimos anos a Síndrome da Apnéia/Hipopnéia Obstrutiva do Sono (SAHOS) tem despertado muito interesse por tratar-se de uma condição não totalmente estabelecida. Muitos critérios usados para definir SAHOS em adultos e crianças são diferentes entre si. Em 1995 Sabe-se que a história clínica do paciente não era suficiente para estabelecer o diagnóstico de SAHOS. Na criança a causa mais comum de SAOS é a hipertrofia adenoamigdaliana, normalmente caracterizada clinicamente pela presença de roncos noturnos, episódios de apnéia, sono agitado, respiração bucal e hipersonolência diurna4. Objetivo: Este estudo tem o intuito de comprovar de forma objetiva a melhora da SAHOS em crianças submetidas a adenoamigdalectomia. Forma de estudo: Clínico prospectivo. Material e método: Para isso, foram avaliadas 23 crianças entre 2 e 13 anos (1999-2001), com hipertrofia adenoamigdaliana, que após nasofibroscopia e polissonografia foram submetidas a cirurgia de adenoamigdalectomia. A polissonografia foi repetida após 2 meses de pós-operatório. Foi então realizado estudo estatístico dos dados obtidos na polissonografia pré- e pós-operatória. Resultado: Observamos que todos os pacientes tiveram melhora importante após adenoamigdalectomia. Duas crianças (8,69%) persistiram com SAOS leve, que anteriormente eram de grau moderado e acentuado. Thermal Decay of the Cosmological Constant into Black Holes
We show that the cosmological constant may be reduced by thermal production
of membranes by the cosmological horizon, analogous to a particle ``going over
the top of the potential barrier", rather than tunneling through it. The
membranes are endowed with charge associated with the gauge invariance of an
antisymmetric gauge potential. In this new process, the membrane collapses into
a black hole, thus the net effect is to produce black holes out of the vacuum
energy associated with the cosmological constant. We study here the
corresponding Euclidean configurations ("thermalons"), and calculate the
probability for the process in the leading semiclassical approximation.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. Minor correction
Investigation of the high momentum component of nuclear wave function using hard quasielastic A(p,2p)X reactions
We present theoretical analysis of the first data on the high energy and
momentum transfer (hard) quasielastic reactions. The cross section
of hard reaction is calculated within the light-cone impulse
approximation based on two-nucleon correlation model for the high-momentum
component of the nuclear wave function. The nuclear effects due to modification
of the bound nucleon structure, soft nucleon-nucleon reinteraction in the
initial and final states of the reaction with and without color coherence have
been considered. The calculations including these nuclear effects show that the
distribution of the bound proton light-cone momentum fraction shifts
towards small values (), effect which was previously derived only
within plane wave impulse approximation. This shift is very sensitive to the
strength of the short range correlations in nuclei. Also calculated is an
excess of the total longitudinal momentum of outgoing protons. The calculations
are compared with data on the reaction obtained from the EVA/AGS
experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. These data show -shift in
agreement with the calculations. The comparison allows also to single out the
contribution from short-range nucleon correlations. The obtained strength of
the correlations is in agreement with the values previously obtained from
electroproduction reactions on nuclei.Comment: 30 pages LaTex file and 19 eps figure
Band structures of periodic carbon nanotube junctions and their symmetries analyzed by the effective mass approximation
The band structures of the periodic nanotube junctions are investigated by
the effective mass theory and the tight binding model.
The periodic junctions are constructed by introducing pairs of a pentagonal
defect and a heptagonal defect periodically in the carbon nanotube.
We treat the periodic junctions whose unit cell is composed by two kinds of
metallic nanotubes with almost same radii, the ratio of which is between 0.7
and 1 .
The discussed energy region is near the undoped Fermi level where the channel
number is kept to two, so there are two bands.
The energy bands are expressed with closed analytical forms by the effective
mass theory with some assumptions, and they coincide well with the numerical
results by the tight binding model. Differences between the two methods are
also discussed. Origin of correspondence between the band structures and the
phason pattern discussed in Phys. Rev. B {\bf 53}, 2114, is clarified. The
width of the gap and the band are in inverse proportion to the length of the
unit cell, which is the sum of the lengths measured along the tube axis in each
tube part and along 'radial' direction in the junction part. The degeneracy and
repulsion between the two bands are determined only from symmetries.Comment: RevTeX, gif fil
Phase Space Analysis of Quintessence Cosmologies with a Double Exponential Potential
We use phase space methods to investigate closed, flat, and open
Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with a scalar potential given by the sum
of two exponential terms. The form of the potential is motivated by the
dimensional reduction of M-theory with non-trivial four-form flux on a
maximally symmetric internal space. To describe the asymptotic features of
run-away solutions we introduce the concept of a `quasi fixed point.' We give
the complete classification of solutions according to their late-time behavior
(accelerating, decelerating, crunch) and the number of periods of accelerated

First measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters using neutrinos and antineutrinos by NOvA.
The NOvA experiment has seen a 4.4σ signal of ν[over ¯]_{e} appearance in a 2 GeV ν[over ¯]_{μ} beam at a distance of 810 km. Using 12.33×10^{20} protons on target delivered to the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beamline, the experiment recorded 27 ν[over ¯]_{μ}→ν[over ¯]_{e} candidates with a background of 10.3 and 102 ν[over ¯]_{μ}→ν[over ¯]_{μ} candidates. This new antineutrino data are combined with neutrino data to measure the parameters |Δm_{32}^{2}|=2.48_{-0.06}^{+0.11}×10^{-3} eV^{2}/c^{4} and sin^{2}θ_{23} in the ranges from (0.53-0.60) and (0.45-0.48) in the normal neutrino mass hierarchy. The data exclude most values near δ_{CP}=π/2 for the inverted mass hierarchy by more than 3σ and favor the normal neutrino mass hierarchy by 1.9σ and θ_{23} values in the upper octant by 1.6σ

Observation of seasonal variation of atmospheric multiple-muon events in the NOvA Near Detector
Using two years of data from the NOvA Near Detector at Fermilab, we report a seasonal variation of cosmic ray induced multiple-muon (Nμ≥2) event rates which has an opposite phase to the seasonal variation in the atmospheric temperature. The strength of the seasonal multiple-muon variation is shown to increase as a function of the muon multiplicity. However, no significant dependence of the strength of the seasonal variation of the multiple-muon variation is seen as a function of the muon zenith angle, or the spatial or angular separation between the correlated muons
Measurement of the Forward-Backward Asymmetry in the B -> K(*) mu+ mu- Decay and First Observation of the Bs -> phi mu+ mu- Decay
We reconstruct the rare decays , , and in a data sample
corresponding to collected in collisions at
by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
Collider. Using and decays we report the branching ratios. In addition, we report
the measurement of the differential branching ratio and the muon
forward-backward asymmetry in the and decay modes, and the
longitudinal polarization in the decay mode with respect to the squared
dimuon mass. These are consistent with the theoretical prediction from the
standard model, and most recent determinations from other experiments and of
comparable accuracy. We also report the first observation of the {\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s \to
\phi\mu^+\mu^-) = [1.44 \pm 0.33 \pm 0.46] \times 10^{-6}27 \pm 6B^0_s$ decay observed.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Search for a New Heavy Gauge Boson Wprime with Electron + missing ET Event Signature in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV
We present a search for a new heavy charged vector boson decaying
to an electron-neutrino pair in collisions at a center-of-mass
energy of 1.96\unit{TeV}. The data were collected with the CDF II detector
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.3\unit{fb}^{-1}. No
significant excess above the standard model expectation is observed and we set
upper limits on . Assuming standard
model couplings to fermions and the neutrino from the boson decay to
be light, we exclude a boson with mass less than
