    Markov or not Markov - this should be a question

    Although it is well known that Markov process theory, frequently applied in the literature on income convergence, imposes some very restrictive assumptions upon the data generating process, these assumptions have generally been taken for granted so far. The present paper proposes, resp. recalls chi-square tests of the Markov property, of spatial independence, and of homogeneity across time and space to assess the reliability of estimated Markov transition matrices. As an illustration we show that the evolution of the income distribution across the 48 coterminous U.S. states from 1929 to 2000 clearly has not followed a Markov process.

    Influenza A positive but H1N1 negative myocarditis in a patient coming from a high outbreak region of new influenza

    We present the case of a 21 year-old man holidaying on the Spanish island of Mallorca, a region of high outbreak of infections with a new influenza A/H1N1 virus. Symptomatic influenza A infection, but not H1N1 positive, led to myocarditis after intimate contact with a woman with positive H1N1 titer. The electrocardiogram showed T-wave inversions in II, III, aVF and V5, V6. Serum chemistry showed elevated levels of troponin T, increased creatine kinase (CK) and CK myocardial band. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging revealed mid- -myocardial and subepicardial hyperintensities in the lateral wall, and subepicardial and mid-myocardial areas of gadolinium enhancement in the inferior wall. Despite intimate contact with an H1N1 positive patient, the analyses on H1N1 (H1 A/Brisbane/59/07, H1 A/ /California/7/09swine) were negative, but were positive for common influenza (H3 A/Brisbane/ /10/07).     Robustness of Binary Black Hole Mergers in the Presence of Spurious Radiation

    We present an investigation into how sensitive the last orbits and merger of binary black hole systems are to the presence of spurious radiation in the initial data. Our numerical experiments consist of a binary black hole system starting the last couple of orbits before merger with additional spurious radiation centered at the origin and fixed initial angular momentum. As the energy in the added spurious radiation increases, the binary is invariably hardened for the cases we tested, i.e. the merger of the two black holes is hastened. The change in merger time becomes significant when the additional energy provided by the spurious radiation increases the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) mass of the spacetime by about 1%. While the final masses of the black holes increase due to partial absorption of the radiation, the final spins remain constant to within our numerical accuracy. We conjecture that the spurious radiation is primarily increasing the eccentricity of the orbit and secondarily increasing the mass of the black holes while propagating out to infinity.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figure

    RS Ophiuchi: Thermonuclear Explosion or Disc Instability?

    Sokoloski et al (2008) have recently reported evidence that the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi produced a pair of highly collimated radio jets within days of its 2006 outburst. This suggests that an accretion disc must be present during the outburst. However in the standard picture of recurrent novae as thermonuclear events, any such disc must be expelled from the white dwarf vicinity, as the nuclear energy yield greatly exceeds its binding energy. We suggest instead that the outbursts of RS Oph are thermal--viscous instabilities in a disc irradiated by the central accreting white dwarf. The distinctive feature of RS Oph is the very large size of its accretion disc. Given this, it fits naturally into a consistent picture of systems with unstable accretion discs. This picture explains the presence and speed of the jets, the brightness and duration of the outburst, and its rise time and linear decay, as well as the faintness of the quiescence. By contrast, the hitherto standard picture of recurrent thermonuclear explosions has a number of severe difficulties. These include the presence of jets, the faintness of quiescence, and the fact the the accretion disc must be unstable unless it is far smaller than any reasonable estimate.Comment: MNRAS, in pres

    The Negligible Influence of Chronic Obesity on Hospitalization, Clinical Status, and Complications in Elective Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion

    Background. Posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) is a common surgical treatment for degenerative spinal instability, but many surgeons consider obesity a contraindication for elective spinal fusion. The aim of this study was to analyze whether obesity has any influence on hospitalization parameters, change in clinical status, or complications. Methods. In this prospective study, regression analysis was used to analyze the influence of the body mass index (BMI) on operating time, postoperative care, hospitalization time, type of postdischarge care, change in paresis or sensory deficits, pain level, wound complications, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, and implant complications. Results. Operating time increased only 2.5 minutes for each increase of BMI by 1. The probability of having a wound complication increased statistically with rising BMI. Nonetheless, BMI accounted for very little of the variation in the data, meaning that other factors or random chances play a much larger role. Conclusions. Obesity has to be considered a risk factor for wound complications in patients undergoing elective PLIF for degenerative instability. However, BMI showed no significant influence on other kinds of peri-or postoperative complications, nor clinical outcomes. So obesity cannot be considered a contraindication for elective PLIF

    Right atrial pathology in arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia

    Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common atrial arrhythmia in arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy/dysplasia (ARVD). Considering the histologic changes known in the right ventricular (RV) in ARVD, the aim of the present study was to examine right atrial (RA) pathology in patients with ARVD. Methods: Histology of RA and RV was assessed from autopsy material in 3 patients with ARVD without persistent atrial arrhythmia. RA histology in 3 patients with permanent AF without ARVD and 5 patients without cardiovascular disease was also studied. Staining with hematoxylin phloxine saffron was performed for the ARVD patients to identify fibrosis, and hematoxylin-eosin for identification of lymphocytes. Masson’s trichrome staining was performed for control groups taken from a collection of standard glass slides. Results: In all 3 ARVD cases, RA anomalies were observed that revealed a reduction of cardiomyocytes, the presence of adipocytes, some of them inside the mediomural atrial layer and interstitial fibrosis. In 2 ARVD cases, interstitial fibrosis was also associated with a focus of replacement fibrosis, which was also observed in patients with permanent AF without ARVD. The histologic specimen of the RA and RV from the control group without cardiovascular disease did not display any evidence of fat or fibrosis with a preserved cardiomyocyte architecture. Conclusions: A similar histopathological substrate, as can be observed in the RV of patients with ARVD can also be seen in the RA of these patients. This may explain the high prevalence of atrial arrhythmias, particularly AF, in patients with ARVD

    Fossil Gas and the Electromagnetic Precursor of Supermassive Binary Black Hole Mergers

    Using a one-dimensional height integrated model, we calculate the evolution of an unequal mass binary black hole with a coplanar gas disk that contains a gap due to the presence of the secondary black hole. Viscous evolution of the outer circumbinary disk initially hardens the binary, while the inner disk drains onto the primary (central) black hole. As long as the inner disk remains cool and thin at low M˙ext\dot{M}_{\rm ext} (rather than becoming hot and geometrically thick), the mass of the inner disk reaches an asymptotic mass typically \sim 10^{-3}-10^{-4}\Msun. Once the semimajor axis shrinks below a critical value, angular momentum losses from gravitational waves dominate over viscous transport in hardening the binary. The inner disk then no longer responds viscously to the inspiraling black holes. Instead, tidal interactions with the secondary rapidly drive the inner disk into the primary. Tidal and viscous dissipation in the inner disk lead to a late time brightening in luminosity Ltminus5/4L\propto t_{\rm minus}^{5/4}, where tminust_{\rm minus} is the time prior to the final merger. This late time brightening peaks 1\sim 1 day prior to the final merger at 0.1LEdd\sim 0.1 L_{\rm Edd}. This behavior is relatively robust because of self regulation in the coupled viscous-gravitational evolution of such binary systems. It constitutes a unique electromagnetic signature of a binary supermassive black hole merger and may allow the host galaxy to be identified if used in conjunction with the Laser Interferometric Space Antenna (LISA) localization.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to MNRA

    Oxidative Stress and Inflammatory Modulation of Ca2+ Handling in Metabolic HFpEF-Related Left Atrial Cardiomyopathy

    Metabolic syndrome-mediated heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is commonly accompanied by left atrial (LA) cardiomyopathy, significantly affecting morbidity and mortality. We evaluate the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and intrinsic inflammation (TNF-α, IL-10) related to dysfunctional Ca2+ homeostasis of LA cardiomyocytes in a rat model of metabolic HFpEF. ZFS-1 obese rats showed features of HFpEF and atrial cardiomyopathy in vivo: increased left ventricular (LV) mass, E/e' and LA size and preserved LV ejection fraction. In vitro, LA cardiomyocytes exhibited more mitochondrial-fission (MitoTracker) and ROS-production (H2DCF). In wildtype (WT), pro-inflammatory TNF-α impaired cellular Ca2+ homeostasis, while anti-inflammatory IL-10 had no notable effect (confocal microscopy; Fluo-4). In HFpEF, TNF-α had no effect on Ca2+ homeostasis associated with decreased TNF-α receptor expression (western blot). In addition, IL-10 substantially improved Ca2+ release and reuptake, while IL-10 receptor-1 expression was unaltered. Oxidative stress in metabolic syndrome mediated LA cardiomyopathy was increased and anti-inflammatory treatment positively affected dysfunctional Ca2+ homeostasis. Our data indicates, that patients with HFpEF-related LA dysfunction might profit from IL-10 targeted therapy, which should be further explored in preclinical trials
