Discovery of a Radio Relic in the Massive Merging Cluster SPT-CL J2023-5535 from the ASKAP-EMU Pilot Survey
The ASKAP-EMU survey is a deep wide-field radio continuum survey designed to cover the entire southern sky and a significant fraction of the northern sky up to +30°. Here, we report a discovery of a radio relic in the merging cluster SPT-CL J2023-5535 at z = 0.23 from the ASKAP-EMU pilot 300 square degree survey (800-1088 MHz). The deep high-resolution data reveal a ∼2 Mpc scale radio halo elongated in the east-west direction, coincident with the intracluster gas. The radio relic is located at the western edge of this radio halo stretched ∼0.5 Mpc in the north-south orientation. The integrated spectral index of the radio relic within the narrow bandwidth is α800MHz1088MHz = -0.76 ± 0.06. Our weak-lensing analysis shows that the system is massive (M200 = 1.04 ± 0.36 × 1015 M⊙) and composed of at least three subclusters. We suggest a scenario, wherein the radio features arise from the collision between the eastern and middle subclusters. Our discovery illustrates the effectiveness of the ASKAP-EMU survey in detecting diffuse emissions in galaxy clusters and when completed, the survey will greatly increase the number of merging cluster detections with diffuse radio emissions
Evidence of Runaway Gas Cooling in the Absence of Supermassive Black Hole Feedback at the Epoch of Cluster Formation
Cosmological simulations, as well as mounting evidence from observations, have shown that supermassive black holes play a fundamental role in regulating the formation of stars throughout cosmic time. This has been clearly demonstrated in the case of galaxy clusters in which powerful feedback from the central black hole is preventing the hot intracluster gas from cooling catastrophically, thus reducing the expected star formation rates by orders of magnitude. These conclusions, however, have been almost entirely based on nearby clusters. Based on new Chandra X-ray observations, we present the first observational evidence for massive, runaway cooling occurring in the absence of supermassive black hole feedback in the high-redshift galaxy cluster SpARCS104922.6 + 564032.5 (z = 1.709). The hot intracluster gas appears to be fueling a massive burst of star formation (≈900 M⊙ yr⁻¹) that is offset by dozens of kpc from the central galaxy. The burst is co-spatial with the coolest intracluster gas but not associated with any galaxy in the cluster. In less than 100 million years, such runaway cooling can form the same amount of stars as in the Milky Way. Therefore, intracluster stars are not only produced by tidal stripping and the disruption of cluster galaxies, but can also be produced by runaway cooling of hot intracluster gas at early times. Overall, these observations show the dramatic impact when supermassive black hole feedback fails to operate in clusters. They indicate that in the highest overdensities, such as clusters and protoclusters, runaway cooling may be a new and important mechanism for fueling massive bursts of star formation in the early universe
Abell 746: A highly disturbed cluster undergoing multiple mergers
We present deep \textit{XMM-Newton}, Karl Jansky Very Large Array, and
upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observations of Abell 746, a cluster
that hosts a plethora of diffuse emission sources that provide evidence for the
acceleration of relativistic particles. Our new \textit{XMM-Newton} images
reveal a complex morphology of the thermal gas with several substructures. We
observe an asymmetric temperature distribution across the cluster: the southern
regions exhibit higher temperatures, reaching 9\,keV, while the northern
regions have lower temperatures (), likely due to a complex
merger. We find evidence of four surface brightness edges, of which three are
merger-driven shock fronts. Combining our new data with the published
LOw-Frequency ARray observations has unveiled the nature of diffuse sources in
this system. The bright northwest relic shows thin filaments and high degree of
polarization with aligned magnetic field vectors. We detect a density jump,
aligned with the fainter relic to the north. To the south, we detect
high-temperature regions, consistent with shock-heated regions and density jump
coincident with the northern tip of the southern radio structure. Its
integrated spectrum shows a high-frequency steepening. Lastly, we find that the
cluster hosts large-scale radio halo emission. The comparison of the thermal
and nonthermal emission reveals an anticorrelation between the bright radio and
X-ray features at the center. Our findings suggest that Abell 746 is a complex
system that involves multiple mergers.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Ap
Dictyostelium discoideum as a Model to Study Inositol Polyphosphates and Inorganic Polyphosphate
The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has given us much information on the metabolism and function of inositol polyphosphates and inorganic polyphosphate. To expand our knowledge of the metabolic as well as functional connections between inositol polyphosphates and inorganic polyphosphate, we have refined and developed techniques to extract and analyze these molecules in a second eukaryotic experimental model, the amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum. This amoeba, possessing a well-defined developmental program, is ideal to study physiological changes in the levels of inositol polyphosphates and inorganic polyphosphate, since levels of both molecules increase at late stages of development. We detail here the methods used to extract inositol polyphosphates using perchloric acid and inorganic polyphosphate using acidic phenol. We also present the postextraction procedures to visualize and quantify these molecules by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and by malachite green assay
Meta-heuristic algorithms for optimized network flow wavelet-based image coding
Optimal multipath selection to maximize the received multiple description coding (MDCs) in a lossy network model is proposed. Multiple description scalar quantization (MDSQ) has been applied to the wavelet coefficients of a color image to generate the MDCs which are combating transmission loss over lossy networks. In the networks, each received description raises the reconstruction quality of an MDC-coded signal (image, audio or video). In terms of maximizing the received descriptions, a greater number of optimal routings between source and destination must be obtained. The rainbow network flow (RNF) collaborated with effective meta-heuristic algorithms is a good approach to resolve it. Two meta-heuristic algorithms which are genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) have been utilized to solve the multi-objective optimization routing problem for finding optimal routings each of which is assigned as a distinct color by RNF to maximize the coded descriptions in a network model. By employing a local search based priority encoding method, each individual in GA and particle in PSO is represented as a potential solution. The proposed algorithms are compared with the multipath Dijkstra algorithm (MDA) for both finding optimal paths and providing reliable multimedia communication. The simulations run over various random network topologies and the results show that the PSO algorithm finds optimal routings effectively and maximizes the received MDCs with assistance of RNF, leading to reduce packet loss and increase throughput
Regulation of GTP-binding Protein (Galpha s) Expression in Human Myometrial Cells A ROLE FOR TUMOR NECROSIS FACTOR IN MODULATING G s PROMOTER ACETYLATION BY TRANSCRIPTIONAL COMPLEXES
The onset of parturition is associated with a number of proinflammatory mediators that are themselves regulated by the nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) family of transcription factors. In this context, we previously reported that the RelA NF-κB subunit represses transcription and mRNA expression of the proquiescent Gαs gene in human myometrial cells following stimulation with the proinflammatory cytokine TNF. In the present study, we initially defined the functional consequence of this on myometrial contractility. Here we show that, contrary to our initial expectations, TNF did not induce myometrial contractility but did inhibit the relaxation produced by the histone deacetylase inhibitor trichostatin A, an effect that in turn was abolished by the NF-κB inhibitor N4-[2-(4-phenoxyphenyl)ethyl]-4,6-quinazolinediamine. This result suggested a role for TNF in regulating Gαs expression via activating NF-κB and modifying histone acetylation associated with the promoter region of the gene. In this context, we show that the −837 to −618 region of the endogenous Gαs promoter is occupied by cAMP-response element-binding protein (CREB), Egr-1, and Sp1 transcription factors and that CREB-binding protein (CBP) transcriptional complexes form within this region where they induce histone acetylation, resulting in increased Gαs expression. TNF, acting via NF-κB, did not change the levels of CREB, Sp1, or Egr-1 binding to the Gαs promoter, but it induced a significant reduction in the level of CBP. This was associated with increased levels of histone deacetylase-1 and surprisingly an increase in H4K8 acetylation. The latter is discussed herein
Ensemble and fuzzy techniques applied to imbalanced traffic congestion datasets a comparative study
Class imbalance is among the most persistent complications which may confront the traditional supervised learning task in real-world applications. Among the different kind of classification problems that have been studied in the literature, the imbalanced ones, particularly those that represents real-world problems, have attracted the interest of many researchers in recent years. In order to face this problems, different approaches have been used or proposed in the literature, between then, soft computing and ensemble techniques. In this work, ensembles and fuzzy techniques have been applied to real-world traffic datasets in order to study their performance in imbalanced real-world scenarios. KEEL platform is used to carried out this study. The results show that different ensemble techniques obtain the best results in the proposed datasets.
