    Integrated Front End Circuitry for Microultrasound Capsule Endoscopy

    Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) was originally developed to address the limitation of conventional endoscopy in accessing the small bowel as a remote part of the gastrointestinal tract. To further enhance the diagnostic ability of VCE, microultrasound capsule endoscopy is under development for identification of disease at an earlier stage and visualisation of subsurface tissue features. This paper presents an evaluation of two approaches to improve signal to noise ratio (SNR) in rapid prototyped capsule endoscopes. First, noise reduction techniques are applied to the integrated front-end circuits in the prototype capsules. Secondly, multiple types of coded excitation transmission are tested and benchmarked with respect to non-coded transmission. Results are presented for both bench top phantom imaging and in vivo translational trial imaging

    New isoxazolidinone and 3,4-dehydro-\u3b2-proline derivatives as antibacterial agents and MAO-inhibitors: A complex balance between two activities

    Among the different classes of antibiotics, oxazolidinone derivatives represent important drugs, since their unique mechanism of action overcomes commonly diffused multidrug-resistant bacteria. Anyway, the structural similarity of these molecules to monoamino oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, like toloxatone and blefoxatone, induces in many cases loss of selectivity as a major concern. A small library of compounds based on isoxazolidinone and dehydro-\u3b2-proline scaffold was designed with the aim to obtain antibacterial agents, evaluating at the same time the potential effects of structural features on MAO inhibitory behaviour. The structural modification introduced in the backbone, starting from Linezolid model, lead to a significant loss in antibiotic activity, while a promising inhibitory effect could be observed on monoamino oxidases. These interesting results are also in agreement with docking experiments suggesting a good binding pose of the synthesized compounds into the pocket of the oxidase enzymes, in particular of MAO-B

    Experience and Prevalence of Dental Caries in Migrant and Nonmigrant Low-SES Families’ Children Aged 3 to 5 Years in Italy

    Dental caries is a public health problem in children and is more prevalent in low-socioeconomic-status groups. The aim of this study is to assess the association between migrant families and the prevalence of caries among young children in Italy. This is a cross-sectional study. In the age range of 3 to 5 years, a total of 266 migrant children and 301 nonmigrant children were examined in three Italian charity dental centers. All children had families with low SES. The dmft was determined by intraoral examination performed by six pediatric dentist specialists to assess their dental health. In this study, the prevalence of caries (71%) and the mean dmft (3.68; SD: 1.52) of migrant children were statistically significantly higher than the percentage (52%) and the mean dmft of the nonmigrant control group (3.10; SD: 1.65) with no differences between genders. For the migrant children, the mean (0.49; SD: 0.32) of restorations (filled teeth) was statistically significantly lower than that of nonmigrant children (1.20; SD: 0.48). This study highlights that dmft values and the prevalence of caries are higher in migrant children than in nonmigrant children.     In Vitro Antibacterial Activity of Pomegranate Juice and Peel Extracts on Cariogenic Bacteria

    Aim: To evaluate the antimicrobial activity of hydroalcoholic extracts of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peel and juice, against the microorganisms considered the main etiologic agents of dental caries. Methods: The values of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined against Streptococcus mutans Clarke ATCC® 25175™ strain and Rothia dentocariosa clinical isolate. Results: Peel extracts inhibit effectively the growth and survival of S. mutans ATCC 25175 strain and R. dentocariosa clinical isolate with MIC and MBC values of 10 μg/μl and 15 μg/μl, respectively. Furthermore, the pomegranate juice extract showed high inhibitory activity against S. mutans ATCC 25175 strain with a MIC value of 25 μg/μl and a MBC value of 40 μg/μl, whereas, against R. dentocariosa, it has displayed a moderate inhibitory activity, with MIC and MBC values of 20 μg/μl and 140 μg/μl, respectively. Conclusions: In vitro microbiological tests demonstrate that the hydroalcoholic extracts of pomegranate juice and peel are able to contrast the main cariogenic bacteria involved in tooth decay. Although being preliminary data, our results suggest that pomegranate polyphenolic compounds could represent a good adjuvant for the prevention and treatment of dental caries

    Do cerebrovascular risk factors impact the clinical expression of idiopathic isolated adult-onset dystonia?

    Background: Although acquired dystonia may develop following ischaemic/haemorrhagic stroke, the relationship between cerebrovascular disease and idiopathic dystonia has been poorly investigated. This cross sectional study aimed at evaluating the impact of cerebrovascular risk factors on the clinical expression of idiopathic adult onset dystonia (IAOD), with reference to dystonia localization and dystonia-associated features. Methods: Data were obtained from the Italian Dystonia Registry. Patients with IAOD were stratified into two groups according to the presence of diabetes mellitus and/or arterial hypertension and/or dyslipidemia and/or heart disease. The two groups were compared for demographic features, dystonia phenotype, and dystonia-associated features (sensory trick, tremor, eye symptoms in blepharospasm, and neck pain in cervical dystonia). Results: A total of 1108 patients participated into the study. Patients who reported one cerebrovascular factor or more (n = 555) had higher age and longer disease duration than patients who did not. On multivariable logistic regression analysis, blepharospasm was the only localization, and sensory trick was the only dystonia-associated feature that was significantly associated with cerebrovascular risk factors. Linear regression analysis showed that the strength of the association between cerebrovascular factors and blepharospasm/sensory trick increased with increasing the number of cerebrovascular factors per patient. Conclusions: Results of the present study showed that cerebrovascular risk factors may be associated with specific features of IAOD that is development of blepharospasm and sensory trick. Further studies are needed to better understand the meaning and the mechanisms underlying this association

    GBA ‐Related Parkinson's Disease: Dissection of Genotype–Phenotype Correlates in a Large Italian Cohort

    Background Variants in GBA are the most common genetic risk factor for Parkinson's disease (PD). The impact of different variants on the PD clinical spectrum is still unclear. Objectives We determined the frequency of GBA ‐related PD in Italy and correlated GBA variants with motor and nonmotor features and their occurrence over time. Methods Sanger sequencing of the whole GBA gene was performed. Variants were classified as mild, severe, complex, and risk. β‐glucocerebrosidase activity was measured. The Kaplan‐Meier method and Cox proportional hazard regression models were performed. Results Among 874 patients with PD, 36 variants were detected in 14.3%, including 20.4% early onset. Patients with GBA‐PD had earlier and more frequent occurrence of several nonmotor symptoms. Patients with severe and complex GBA‐PD had the highest burden of symptoms and a higher risk of hallucinations and cognitive impairment. Complex GBA‐PD had the lowest β‐glucocerebrosidase activity. Conclusions GBA‐PD is highly prevalent in Italy. Different types of mutations underlie distinct phenotypic profiles
