The birth of a new child is a very special stage in the life of the families. It's considered one of the most complex phases of the life cycle. It requires adaptive capacity from the families to correctly deal with a new member's integration. The birth of a child with Special Educational Needs (SEN) implies not only family adaptation but also acceptance. Those can strengthen family relationships or disintegrate them. In order to guarantee a healthy adaptability to the new member with special needs, co-parenting, cohesion, adaptability, and resilience will improve the Family dynamic. The main purpose of this investigation is to analyze co-parenting, the cohesion, adaptability and resilience in families with children with SEN. We intend to investigate how co-parenting, cohesion and adaptability behave as promoters of resilience in families with children with SEN. A total of 78 subjects participated in the descriptive and correlate study, 36 parents and 42 mothers with children with SEN, aged between 24 to 68 years old (M = 42.46, SD = 9.979). With an application of a Socio-Demographic Questionnaire, a Co-parenting Questionnaire, a Family Adaptability and Cohesion Assessment Scale (FACES III) and a Family Resilience Assessment Scale (FRAS), the results obtained reveal that most families have developed resilience. The results also show that the co-parenting, cohesion and the adaptability of these families contribute to the promotion of resilience, with co-parenting being the variable that contributes the most. Thus, taking into account the obtained results, we conclude that the parents who have children with SEN have tools to help them dealing with crisis situations by balancing family dynamics

Abstract: This study aimed to characterize and explore alcohol consumption (beer, wine and spirits) in a Portuguese sample of 68 individuals in early adulthood, according to sociodemographic variables gender and age. Consumption were noted in percentages exceeding 50% in the overall sample (51.5%), in males (70%) and in the age group 22-45 years (55.6%). As regards the type of beverage, highest values were verified in wine, beer and followed finally by spirits, in the youngest age group (17-22 years), while in older (≥22 years) beer occupied the first place in consumption. Gender differences were recorded with greater male consumption. There were no age differences, despite higher rates of consumption in older (≥22 years). The severity of the problem in terms of public health requires early, structured and integrated interventions, as well as an ongoing educational work

Effect of chronic exercise on fluoride metabolism in fluorosis-susceptible mice exposed to high fluoride

    Get PDF
Abstract The present study investigated the effect of chronic exercise on fluoride (F) metabolism in fluorosis-susceptible mice exposed to high-F and explored the relationship between F concentrations in bone and plasma. Thirty male mice were randomised into three groups: Group I (No-F, No-Exercise), Group II (50 ppmF, No-Exercise), Group III (50 ppmF, Exercise). Body weight and physical performance of all mice were measured at baseline and end of experiment. F concentrations of plasma and bone were measured at the end of experiment. Mean plasma F concentration was significantly higher (p < 0.001) in Groups II and III compared with Group I. Mean bone F concentration was also significantly higher (p < 0.01) in Groups II and III compared with Group I. There was a significant correlation (p = 0.01, r = 0.54) between F concentration of plasma and bone. Mean body weight of Group I mice was significantly higher than Group II (p < 0.001) and Group III (p = 0.001) mice at the end of the experiment. This study, which provides the first data on the effect of chronic exercise on F metabolism in fluorosis-susceptible mice, suggests no effect of chronic exercise on F in plasma and bone. However, exposure to high-F resulted in lower body weight and exercise capacity in mice

Effect of Physical Exercise and Genetic Background on Glucose Homeostasis and Liver/Muscle Proteomes in Mice.

We compared the parameters related to glucose homeostasis, and liver and muscle proteomes in fluorosis-susceptible (A/J; S) and fluorosis-resistant (129P3/J; R) mice in response to fluoride (F) exposure and exercise. Ninety male mice (45 R-mice and 45 S-mice) were randomized into three groups: (SI; RI) No-F, No-Exercise, (SII; RII) 50 ppm F, No-Exercise, (SIII; RIII) 50 ppm F, Exercise. Overall, mean F concentrations in the plasma and femur were significantly higher in R-mice compared with S-mice. In R-mice, exercise resulted in an increase in F accumulation in the femur. In S-mice, the mean plasma glucose level was significantly higher in Group II compared with Groups I and III. There was an increase in liver proteins involved in energy flux and antioxidant enzymes in non-exercise groups (I, II) of S-mice in comparison with the corresponding groups of R-mice. The results also showed a decrease in muscle protein expression in Group I S-mice compared with their R-mice counterparts. In conclusion, the findings suggest an increased state of oxidative stress in fluorosis-susceptible mice that might be exacerbated by the treatment with F. In addition, fluorosis-susceptible mice have plasma glucose levels higher than fluorosis-resistant mice on exposure to F, and this is not affected by exercise

We described angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE) isoforms with molecular masses of 190, 90, and 65 kDa in the urine of normotensive offspring of hypertensive subjects. Since they did not appear in equal amounts, we suggested that 90 kDa ACE might be a marker for hypertension. We evaluated the endothelial response in normotensive offspring with or without family history of hypertension and its association with the 90 kDa ACE in urine. Thirty-five normotensive subjects with a known family history of hypertension and 20 subjects without a family history of hypertension, matched for age, sex, body weight, and blood pressure, were included in the study. Endothelial function was assessed by ultrasound and a sample of urine was collected for determination of ACE isoforms. In the presence of a family history of hypertension and detection of 90 kDa ACE, we noted a maximal flow mediated dilation of 12.1 ± 5.0 vs 16.1 ± 6.0% in those without a previous history of hypertension and lacking urinary 90 kDa ACE (P < 0.05). In subjects with a family history of hypertension and presenting 90 kDa ACE, there were lower levels of HDL-cholesterol (P < 0.05) and higher levels of triglycerides (P < 0.05). Subjects with 90 kDa ACE irrespective of hypertensive history presented a trend for higher levels of triglycerides and HDL-cholesterol (P = 0.06) compared to subjects without 90 kDa ACE. Our data suggest that the 90 kDa ACE may be a marker for hypertension which may be related to the development of early atherosclerotic changes.Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) Escola Paulista de Medicina Departamento de MedicinaFundação Oswaldo Ramos Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) e Hospital do Rim e Hipertensão Departamento de RadiologiaUNIFESP, EPM, Depto. de MedicinaFundação Oswaldo Ramos UNIFESP, e Hospital do Rim e Hipertensão Depto. de RadiologiaSciEL

    Get PDF
Objective: This study aims to describe the epidemiological characteristics and survival rates of children with acute myeloid leukemia treated in hospitals in southern Brazil and compare them with international data. Methods: A multicenter cohort study was conducted with retrospective data collection of all new patients with acute myeloid leukemia under 18 treated at five referral centers in pediatric hematology-oncology in southern Brazil between January 2005 and December 2015. Results: Of the 149 patients with acute myeloid leukemia, 63.0% (n = 94) were male. The median age at diagnosis was 10.5 years (range 0-18 years) and 40.3% (n = 60) had a white blood cell count below 50,000/mm2. The most common Franco-American-British (FAB) subtype was M3 (n = 43, 28.9%). Nine (6.0%) patients had central nervous system disease. In M3 patients, overall survival (OS) was 69.2% and 3-year event-free survival was 67.7%; in non-M3 patients, these rates were 45.3% and 36.7%, respectively. In non-M3 patients, OS was significantly different between transplanted (61.8%) and non-transplanted (38.2%) patients (p = 0.031). Conclusions: These results show a higher prevalence of the Franco-American-British M3 subtype than that reported in the international literature, as well as a decreased OS compared with that of developed countries. Further multicenter Brazilian studies with a larger sample size are encouraged to better understand the characteristics of acute myeloid leukemia, and to improve the treatment and prognosis in this population
