    Validation of the Brazilian Children's Test of Pseudoword Repetition in Portuguese speakers aged 4 to 10 years

    The phonological loop is a component of the working memory system specifically involved in the processing and manipulation of limited amounts of information of a sound-based phonological nature. Phonological memory can be assessed by the Children's Test of Nonword Repetition (CNRep) in English speakers but not in Portuguese speakers due to phonotactic differences between the two languages. The objectives of the present study were: 1) to develop the Brazilian Children's Test of Pseudoword Repetition (BCPR), a Portuguese version of the CNRep, and 2) to validate the BCPR by correlation with the Auditory Digit Span Test from the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale. The BCPR and Digit Span were assessed in 182 children aged 4-10 years, 84 from Minas Gerais State (42 from a rural region) and 98 from the city of SĂŁo Paulo. There are subject age and word length effects causing repetition accuracy to decline as a function of the number of syllables of the pseudowords. Correlations between BCPR and Digit Span forward (r = 0.50; P <= 0.01) and backward (r = 0.43; P <= 0.01) were found, and partial correlation indicated that higher BCPR scores were associated with higher Digit Span scores. BCPR appears to depend more on schooling, while Digit Span was more related to development.     Isolation and characterization of a human cementocyte-like cell line, HCY-23

    Cementum is the mineralized tissue covering the tooth root that functions in tooth attachment and post-eruptive adjustment of tooth position. It has been reported to be highly similar to bone in several respects but remains poorly understood in terms of development and regeneration. Here, we investigate whether cementocytes, the residing cells in cellular cementum, have the potential to be protagonist in cementum homeostasis, responding to endocrine signals and directing local cementum metabolism. Cells from healthy erupted human teeth were isolated using sequential collagenase/EDTA digestions, and maintained in standard cell culture conditions. A cementocyte-like cell line was cloned (HCY-23, for human cementocyte clone 23), which presented a cementocyte compatible gene expression signature, including the expression of dentin matrix protein 1 ( DMP1 ), sclerostin ( SOST ), and E11/gp38/podoplanin ( E11 ). In contrast, these cells did not express the odontoblast/dentin marker dentin sialoprotein ( DSPP ). HCY-23 cells produced mineral-like nodules in vitro under differentiation conditions, and were highly responsive to inorganic phosphate (Pi).     Formas de fĂłsforo no tecido de plantas anuais de inverno cultivadas em Latossolo Vermelho sob diferentes sistemas de manejo de solo

    As plantas de cobertura propiciam a proteção e a reciclagem de nutrientes do solo, como o fĂłsforo (P). Contudo, o teor e as formas de acĂșmulo de P podem variar entre espĂ©cies e sistemas de manejo de solo. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as formas de acĂșmulo de P no tecido vegetal de plantas anuais de inverno, manejadas sob Sistema Plantio Direto (SPD) e Cultivo Convencional (SCC). O experimento foi instalado em 1986 no Instituto AgronĂŽmico do ParanĂĄ, em Pato Branco-PR, sobre um Latossolo Vermelho aluminofĂ©rrico. Ele se baseia no uso de seis plantas anuais de inverno (trigo, aveia branca, centeio, ervilhaca, nabo forrageiro e tremoço azul) que foram manejadas sob SPD e SCC. Em maio de 2011 as espĂ©cies foram semeadas, sem o uso de fertilizantes, e em setembro de 2011 efetuou-se a coleta da parte aĂ©rea das plantas. No LaboratĂłrio de QuĂ­mica e Fertilidade do Solo da UFSM realizou-se o fracionamento de P do tecido vegetal, alĂ©m da determinação dos teores de carbono total, nitrogĂȘnio total e P disponĂ­vel do solo. A partir dos dados obtidos, conclui-se que as formas de acĂșmulo de P no tecido das plantas anuais de inverno variam em função da espĂ©cie e da disponibilidade de P no ambiente; para todas as plantas anuais de inverno o P inorgĂąnico solĂșvel Ă© a principal forma de acĂșmulo de P no tecido vegetal, principalmente quando sĂŁo cultivadas em solos com maior disponibilidade de P, como sob SPD; Em ambientes com baixa disponibilidade de P, plantas anuais de inverno tendem a diminuir as formas solĂșveis de P e, ao mesmo tempo, acumular formas orgĂąnicas estĂĄveis, principalmente na forma de Prna e Plip

    Orthopedic surgery increases atherosclerotic lesions and necrotic core area in ApoE-/- mice

    Background and aims Observational studies show a peak incidence of cardiovascular events after major surgery. For example, the risk of myocardial infarction increases 25-fold early after hip replacement. The acuteness of this increased risk suggests abrupt enhancement in plaque vulnerability, which may be related to intra-plaque inflammation, thinner fibrous cap and/or necrotic core expansion. We hypothesized that acute systemic inflammation following major orthopedic surgery induces such changes. Methods ApoE−/− mice were fed a western diet for 10 weeks. Thereafter, half the mice underwent mid-shaft femur osteotomy followed by realignment with an intramedullary K-wire, to mimic major orthopedic surgery. Mice were sacrificed 5 or 15 days post-surgery (n = 22) or post-saline injection (n = 13). Serum amyloid A (SAA) was measured as a marker of systemic inflammation. Paraffin embedded slides of the aortic root were stained to measure total plaque area and to quantify fibrosis, calcification, necrotic core, and inflammatory cells. Results Surgery mice showed a pronounced elevation of serum amyloid A (SAA) and developed increased plaque and necrotic core area already at 5 days, which reached significance at 15 days (p = 0.019; p = 0.004 for plaque and necrotic core, respectively). Macrophage and lymphocyte density significantly decreased in the surgery group compared to the control group at 15 days (p = 0.037; p = 0.024, respectively). The density of neutrophils and mast cells remained unchanged. Conclusions Major orthopedic surgery in ApoE−/− mice triggers a systemic inflammatory response. Atherosclerotic plaque area is enlarged after surgery mainly due to an increase of the necrotic core. The role of intra-plaque inflammation in this response to surgical injury remains to be fully elucidated. © 2016 Elsevier Ireland Lt

    The Hahn Quantum Variational Calculus

    We introduce the Hahn quantum variational calculus. Necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for the basic, isoperimetric, and Hahn quantum Lagrange problems, are studied. We also show the validity of Leitmann's direct method for the Hahn quantum variational calculus, and give explicit solutions to some concrete problems.     Ruthenocuprates RuSr2(Eu,Ce)2Cu2O10: Intrinsic magnetic multilayers

    We report ac susceptibility data on RuSr_2(Eu,Ce)_2Cu_2O_(10-y) (Ru-1222, Ce content x=0.5 and 1.0), RuSr_2GdCu_2O_8 (Ru-1212) and SrRuO_3. Both Ru-1222 (x=0.5, 1.0) sample types exhibit unexpected magnetic dynamics in low magnetic fields: logarithmic time relaxation, switching behavior, and `inverted' hysteresis loops. Neither Ru-1212 nor SrRuO_3 exhibit such magnetic dynamics. The results are interpreted as evidence of the complex magnetic order in Ru-1222. We propose a specific multilayer model to explain the data, and note that superconductivity in the ruthenocuprate is compatible with both the presence and absence of the magnetic dynamics.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, Revtex; submitted to Phys.Rev.

    Theotonio dos Santos (1936-2018), the revolutionary intellectual who pioneered dependency theory

    This article analyzes the origins and development of the dependency theory through the life and work of Theotonio Dos Santos. His formative years at the academy and his early political activism in Brazil are examined, particularly, his time at the University of Brasilia with Vania Bambirra, Ruy Mauro Marini and André Gunder Frank ("the quartet"). This is followed by a discussion about their years of exile in Chile where the quartet regrouped at the Center for Socio-Economic Studies (ceso) of the University of Chile, and where they wrote their founding texts on dependency theory. Chile provided fertile ground for the development of this theory due to its intellectual climate, institutionality, and the country's political transformations in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The military overthrow of the Allende government on that fateful September 11th, 1973 forced the quartet once again into exile. The article continues with an analysis of Dos Santos' writings during his exile in Mexico and then back in Brazil. During this period he became involved with world system theory which culminated in the publication of his extensive trilogy on the contemporary crisis of capitalism and social theory

    From the Environment to the Host: Re-Wiring of the Transcriptome of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from 22°C to 37°C

    Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a highly versatile opportunistic pathogen capable of colonizing multiple ecological niches. This bacterium is responsible for a wide range of both acute and chronic infections in a variety of hosts. The success of this microorganism relies on its ability to adapt to environmental changes and re-program its regulatory and metabolic networks. The study of P. aeruginosa adaptation to temperature is crucial to understanding the pathogenesis upon infection of its mammalian host. We examined the effects of growth temperature on the transcriptome of the P. aeruginosa PAO1. Microarray analysis of PAO1 grown in Lysogeny broth at mid-exponential phase at 22°C and 37°C revealed that temperature changes are responsible for the differential transcriptional regulation of 6.4% of the genome. Major alterations were observed in bacterial metabolism, replication, and nutrient acquisition. Quorum-sensing and exoproteins secreted by type I, II, and III secretion systems, involved in the adaptation of P. aeruginosa to the mammalian host during infection, were up-regulated at 37°C compared to 22°C. Genes encoding arginine degradation enzymes were highly up-regulated at 22°C, together with the genes involved in the synthesis of pyoverdine. However, genes involved in pyochelin biosynthesis were up-regulated at 37°C. We observed that the changes in expression of P. aeruginosa siderophores correlated to an overall increase in Fe(2+) extracellular concentration at 37°C and a peak in Fe(3+) extracellular concentration at 22°C. This suggests a distinct change in iron acquisition strategies when the bacterium switches from the external environment to the host. Our work identifies global changes in bacterial metabolism and nutrient acquisition induced by growth at different temperatures.
