    Comparison of measurements of the outer scale of turbulence by three different techniques

    We have made simultaneous and nearly simultaneous measurements of L0, the outer scale of turbulence, at the Palomar Observatory by using three techniques: angle-of-arrival covariance measurements with the Generalized Seeing Monitor (GSM), differential-image-motion measurements with the adaptive-optics system on the Hale 5-m telescope, and fringe speed measurements with the Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI). The three techniques give consistent results, an outer scale of approximately 10-20 m, despite the fact that the spatial scales of the three instruments vary from 1 m for the GSM to 100 m for the PTI

    Effect of anode flow field design in direct methanol fuel cells: preliminary studies

    The direct methanol fuel cells are promising candidates for portable power sources due to their high energy density, however studies continue in order to give solutions for a number of drawbacks that affect cell performance and efficiency. Achieving good fuel cell performance requires that the flowing streams of fuel and oxidizer are evenly distributed over the entire surface of the catalyst layer and also an efficient removal of reaction products. This is achieved through the optimal design of the flow field, which primarily depend upon channel pattern as well as channel (and rib) shape and size. In this work the effect of anode flow field design on the performance of an own built DMFC is studied. Preliminary results are herein presented

    Accuracy of photometric redshifts for future weak lensing surveys from space

    Photometric redshifts are a key tool to extract as much information as possible from planned cosmic shear experiments. In this work we aim to test the performances that can be achieved with observations in the near-infrared from space and in the optical from the ground. This is done by performing realistic simulations of multi-band observations of a patch of the sky, and submitting these mock images to software usually applied to real images to extract the photometry and then a redshift estimate for each galaxy. In this way we mimic the most relevant sources of uncertainty present in real data analysis, including blending and light pollution between galaxies. As an example we adopt the infrared setup of the ESA-proposed Euclid mission, while we simulate different observations in the optical, modifying filters, exposure times and seeing values. Finally, we consider directly some future ground-based experiments, such as LSST, Pan-Starrs and DES. The results highlight the importance of u-band observations, especially to discriminate between low (z < 0.5) and high (z ~ 3) redshifts, and the need for good observing sites, with seeing FWHM < 1. arcsec. The former of these indications clearly favours the LSST experiment as a counterpart for space observations, while for the other experiments we need to exclude at least 15 % of the galaxies to reach a precision in the photo-zs equal to < 0.05.Comment: 11 pages, to be published in MNRAS.     Estimate of the bottom compressional wave speed profile in the northeastern South China Sea using "Sources of Opportunity"

The definitive version was published in IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering 29 (2004): 1231-1248, doi:10.1109/JOE.2004.834681.The inversion of a broad-band "source of opportunity" signal for bottom geoacoustic parameters in the northeastern South China Sea (SCS) is presented, which supplements the towed source and chirp sonar bottom inversions that were performed as part of the Asian Seas International Acoustics Experiment (ASIAEX). This source of opportunity was most likely a "dynamite fishing" signal, which has sufficient low-frequency content (5-500 Hz) to make it complimentary to the somewhat higher frequency J-15-3 towed source (50-260 Hz) signals and the much higher frequency (1-10 kHz) chirp signals. This low frequency content will penetrate deeper into the bottom, thus extending the other inverse results. Localization of the source is discussed, using both a horizontal array for azimuthal steering and the "water wave" part of the pulse arrival for distance estimation. A linear broad-band inverse is performed, and three new variants of the broad-band inverse, based on: 1) the Airy phase; 2) the cutoff frequency; and 3) a range-dependent medium are presented. A multilayer model of the bottom compressional wave speed is obtained, and error estimates for this model are shown, both for the range-independent approximation to the waveguide and for the range-dependent waveguide.     Evaluation of the Ability of LL-37 to Neutralise LPS In Vitro and Ex Vivo

    BACKGROUND: Human cathelicidin LL-37 is a cationic antimicrobial peptide (AMP) which possesses a variety of activities including the ability to neutralise endotoxin. In this study, we investigated the role of LPS neutralisation in mediating LL-37's ability to inhibit Pseudomonas aeruginosa LPS signalling in human monocytic cells. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Pre-treatment of monocytes with LL-37 significantly inhibited LPS-induced IL-8 production and the signalling pathway of associated transcription factors such as NF-ÎşB. However, upon removal of LL-37 from the media prior to LPS stimulation, these inhibitory effects were abolished. These findings suggest that the ability of LL-37 to inhibit LPS signalling is largely dependent on extracellular LPS neutralisation. In addition, LL-37 potently inhibited cytokine production induced by LPS extracted from P. aeruginosa isolated from the lungs of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. In the CF lung, polyanionic molecules such as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and DNA bind LL-37 and impact negatively on its antibacterial activity. In order to determine whether such interactions interfere with the LPS neutralising ability of LL-37, the status of LL-37 and its ability to bind LPS in CF sputum were investigated. Overall our findings suggest that in the CF lung, the ability of LL-37 to bind LPS and inhibit LPS-induced IL-8 production is attenuated as a result of binding to DNA and GAGs. However, LL-37 levels and its concomitant LPS-binding activity can be increased with a combination of DNase and GAG lyase (heparinase II) treatment. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Overall, these findings suggest that a deficiency in available LL-37 in the CF lung may contribute to greater LPS-induced inflammation during CF lung disease

    High Levels of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 in Blood and Semen of Seropositive Men in Sub-Saharan Africa

    High levels of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) replication, as reflected in HIV-1 RNA concentrations in blood and semen, probably contribute to both rapid disease progression and enhanced sexual transmission. Semen and blood were collected from 49 Malawian and 61 US and Swiss (US/Swiss) HIV-1.seropositive men with similar CD4 cell counts and no urethritis or exposure to antiretroviral drugs. Median seminal plasma and blood plasma HIV-1 RNA concentrations were > 3-fold (P = .034) and 5-fold (P = .0003) higher, respectively, in the Malawian men. Similar differences were observed in subsets of the Malawian and US/Swiss study groups matched individually for CD4 cell count (P = .035 and P <.002, respectively). These observations may help explain the high rates of HIV-1 sexual transmission and accelerated HIV-1 disease progression in sub-Saharan Afric

    Diurnal and semidiurnal internal tide energy flux at a continental slope in the South China Sea

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research 113 (2008): C03025, doi:10.1029/2007JC004418.Barotropic (surface) and baroclinic (internal) tides were measured at four mooring sites during a field investigation of acoustic propagation characteristics and physical oceanography in the northern South China Sea. The mooring positions were in a line moving up the shallow portion of a continental slope at water depths between 350 and 85 m. Using time series of temperature and velocity, at several depths, 1-month series of semidiurnal and diurnal species internal tidal energy flux vectors were computed for three sites, with a 14-day series computed for the fourth (shallow) site. The internal tides had a temporal signature that was not in complete accord with the barotropic tides, showing an enhancement of diurnal internal tides with respect to semidiurnal. Bathymetric slope, barotropic tidal fluid particle trajectories, and scale of generation site versus internal tide wavelength are investigated as possible causes of the differing response of the species.This work was funded by grants from the U.S. Office of Naval Research, Physical Oceanography, and Ocean Acoustics programs and by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
