    A FOLLOW-UP STUDY OF FIFTY-TWO RICHMOND PUBLIC SCHOOL PUPILS GIVEN PSYCHIATRIC STAFFING DURING THE 1966-1967 SCHOOL YEAR

    This research study is a descriptive study of the effectiveness of the psychiatric staffing as determined by a follow-up study of fifty-two Richmond Public School Pupils given such staffing during the l966-67 school year. The review of pertinent literature reveals what others have contributed to the knowledge of the nature and function of the school helping team. The teamwork approach, which involves the efforts of several professions and disciplines working closely together, is seen as the best present method to meet the complex, overlapping needs which have been found to affect students\u27 learning. As a means of establishing guidelines and limits for this study, five areas of concern were defined. The questions to be answered by this study were: 1. What are the socio-economic backgrounds represented by the sample? 2. Were the recommendations made by the school psychiatrist implemented? 3. Is the overall psychiatric staffing effective according to the improvement in pupils presenting problems and the extent to which the recommendations were carried out? 4. To what extent do the available records contain sufficient information for a follow-up study? 5. What are the attitudes of the key persons responsible for the psychiatric staffing toward the effective operation of these staffings? The Pupil Personnel Services gave its approval to conduct this study. The sample numbered fifty-two. The agency requested and it was agreed that no pupil, school, or agency be contacted and that information be obtained only from the files and employees of Pupil Personnel Services. An interview schedule was constructed to elicit information to determine the extent to which the recommendations made during the psychiatric staffing were initiated and carried out. This schedule was applied to the pupil records. Open ended questions were used in interview schedules to gather pertinent information from three key persons responsible for the effective operation of the psychiatric staffing. The fifty-two pupil cases revealed the pupils to be largely from low income families, mostly males with acting-out behavior problems, and with no significant concentration from any one school. A larger percentage of the recommendations that were initiated involved the use of school resources rather than community resources. In nearly half of the pupil cases the recommendations were completely carried out, with a remaining few being carried out to a lesser extent. The findings suggested that, if the recommendations were carried out, the pupil would show behavior improvement. To a large extent the statements made by the key persons generally reflected that methods of record keeping be improved within the Department of Visiting Teachers; that there be an increase in the number and quality of the visiting teachers, especially for elementary and Junior high school placements; that parents of the pupils given psychiatric staffings become involved in the staffings and be included in the treatment process themselves; and that the visiting teacher exercise more responsibility for follow-up on the pupils given psychiatric staffing

    Relativistic Corrections to the Triton Binding Energy

    The influence of relativity on the triton binding energy is investigated. The relativistic three-dimensional version of the Bethe-Salpeter equation proposed by Blankenbecler and Sugar (BbS) is used. Relativistic (non-separable) one-boson-exchange potentials (constructed in the BbS framework) are employed for the two-nucleon interaction. In a 34-channel Faddeev calculation, it is found that relativistic effects increase the triton binding energy by about 0.2 MeV. Including charge-dependence (besides relativity), the final triton binding energy predictions are 8.33 and 8.16 MeV for the Bonn A and B potential, respectively.Comment: 25 pages of text (latex), 1 figure (not included, available upon request

    Dibaryon model for nuclear force and the properties of the 3N3N system

    The dibaryon model for NNNN interaction, which implies the formation of an intermediate six-quark bag dressed by a σ\sigma-field, is applied to the 3N3N system, where it results in a new three-body force of scalar nature between the six-quark bag and a third nucleon. A new multicomponent formalism is developed to describe three-body systems with nonstatic pairwise interactions and non-nucleonic degrees of freedom. Precise variational calculations of 3N3N bound states are carried out in the dressed-bag model including the new scalar three-body force. The unified coupling constants and form factors for 2N2N and 3N3N force operators are used in the present approach, in a sharp contrast to conventional meson-exchange models. It is shown that this three-body force gives at least half the 3N3N total binding energy, while the weight of non-nucleonic components in the 3^3H and 3^3He wavefunctions can exceed 10%. The new force model provides a very good description of 3N3N bound states with a reasonable magnitude of the σNN\sigma NN coupling constant. A new Coulomb 3N3N force between the third nucleon and dibaryon is found to be very important for a correct description of the Coulomb energy and r.m.s. charge radius in 3^3He. In view of the new results for Coulomb displacement energy obtained here for A=3 nuclei, an explanation for the long-term Nolen--Schiffer paradox in nuclear physics is suggested.     The global burden of cancer attributable to risk factors, 2010-19 : a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

    Background Understanding the magnitude of cancer burden attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors is crucial for development of effective prevention and mitigation strategies. We analysed results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 to inform cancer control planning efforts globally. Methods The GBD 2019 comparative risk assessment framework was used to estimate cancer burden attributable to behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risk factors. A total of 82 risk-outcome pairs were included on the basis of the World Cancer Research Fund criteria. Estimated cancer deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) in 2019 and change in these measures between 2010 and 2019 are presented. Findings Globally, in 2019, the risk factors included in this analysis accounted for 4.45 million (95% uncertainty interval 4.01-4.94) deaths and 105 million (95.0-116) DALYs for both sexes combined, representing 44.4% (41.3-48.4) of all cancer deaths and 42.0% (39.1-45.6) of all DALYs. There were 2.88 million (2.60-3.18) risk-attributable cancer deaths in males (50.6% [47.8-54.1] of all male cancer deaths) and 1.58 million (1.36-1.84) risk-attributable cancer deaths in females (36.3% [32.5-41.3] of all female cancer deaths). The leading risk factors at the most detailed level globally for risk-attributable cancer deaths and DALYs in 2019 for both sexes combined were smoking, followed by alcohol use and high BMI. Risk-attributable cancer burden varied by world region and Socio-demographic Index (SDI), with smoking, unsafe sex, and alcohol use being the three leading risk factors for risk-attributable cancer DALYs in low SDI locations in 2019, whereas DALYs in high SDI locations mirrored the top three global risk factor rankings. From 2010 to 2019, global risk-attributable cancer deaths increased by 20.4% (12.6-28.4) and DALYs by 16.8% (8.8-25.0), with the greatest percentage increase in metabolic risks (34.7% [27.9-42.8] and 33.3% [25.8-42.0]). Interpretation The leading risk factors contributing to global cancer burden in 2019 were behavioural, whereas metabolic risk factors saw the largest increases between 2010 and 2019. Reducing exposure to these modifiable risk factors would decrease cancer mortality and DALY rates worldwide, and policies should be tailored appropriately to local cancer risk factor burden.     IODP Expeditions 309 and 312 drill an intact section of upper oceanic basement into gabbros

    The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program's (IODP) Expeditions 309 and 312 successfully completed the first sampling of an intact section of upper oceanic crust, through lavas and the sheeted dikes into the uppermost gabbros. Hole 1256D, which was initiated on the Ocean Drilling Program's (ODP) Leg 206, now penetrates to >1500 mbsf and >1250 m sub-basement. The first gabbroic rocks were encountered at 1407 mbsf. Below this, the hole penetrates 3c100 m into a complex zone of fractionated gabbros intruded into contact metamorphosed dikes

    A sequence of ash layers recovered from site 178 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project in the Gulf of Alaska was studied to determine the nature of highly explosive volcanic eruptions associated with the Aleutian Arc and Alaskan Peninsula during the last 8 m.y. The major-element chemistry of 25 distinct ash layers was determined. When the analyses are plotted on conventional major-element variation diagrams, the unusual, highly evolved, calc-alkalic characteristics of the ashes are apparent. Perhaps more significantly, there is a good correlation of certain indices of the degree of chemical evolution of each ash (SiO2 content and Larsen index) with sample age. Both parameters vary cyclically, with maximum values of both indices occurring at present, 2.5, and about 5.0 m.y. ago. The cause of the cyclic activity, as well as discontinuous volcanic activity reported for other areas by other investigators, is not precisely known. However, we suggest that variable rates of subduction provide a viable hypothesis for discontinuous volcanic activity associated with convergent plate boundaries
