Spatial Degrees of Freedom in Everett Quantum Mechanics
Stapp claims that, when spatial degrees of freedom are taken into account,
Everett quantum mechanics is ambiguous due to a "core basis problem." To
examine an aspect of this claim I generalize the ideal measurement model to
include translational degrees of freedom for both the measured system and the
measuring apparatus. Analysis of this generalized model using the Everett
interpretation in the Heisenberg picture shows that it makes unambiguous
predictions for the possible results of measurements and their respective
probabilities. The presence of translational degrees of freedom for the
measuring apparatus affects the probabilities of measurement outcomes in the
same way that a mixed state for the measured system would. Examination of a
measurement scenario involving several observers illustrates the consistency of
the model with perceived spatial localization of the measuring apparatus.Comment: 34 pp., no figs. Introduction, discussion revised. Material

Feasible combinatorial matrix theory
We show that the well-known Konig's Min-Max Theorem (KMM), a fundamental
result in combinatorial matrix theory, can be proven in the first order theory
\LA with induction restricted to formulas. This is an
improvement over the standard textbook proof of KMM which requires
induction, and hence does not yield feasible proofs --- while our new approach
does. \LA is a weak theory that essentially captures the ring properties of
matrices; however, equipped with induction \LA is capable of
proving KMM, and a host of other combinatorial properties such as Menger's,
Hall's and Dilworth's Theorems. Therefore, our result formalizes Min-Max type
of reasoning within a feasible framework
What Physical Processes Drive the Interstellar Medium in the Local Bubble?
Recent 3D high-resolution simulations of the interstellar medium in a star form-
ing galaxy like the Milky Way show that supernova explosions are the main driver of the
structure and evolution of the gas. Its physical state is largely controlled by turbulence due
to the high Reynolds numbers of the average flows. For a constant supernova rate a dynam-
ical equilibrium is established within 200 Myr of simulation as a consequence of the setup
of a galactic fountain. The resulting interstellar medium reveals a typical density/pressure
pattern, i.e. distribution of so-called gas phases, on scales of 500â700 pc, with interstellar
bubbles being a common phenomenon just like the Local Bubble and the Loop I superbub-
ble, which are assumed to be interacting. However, modeling the Local Bubble is special,
because it is driven by a moving group, passing through its volume, as it is inferred from
the analysis of Hipparcos data. A detailed analysis reveals that between 14 and 19 super-
novae have exploded during the last 15 Myr. The age of the Local Bubble is derived from
comparison with HI and UV absorption line data to be 14.5±0.7
Myr. We further predict the
0.4merging of the two bubbles in about 3 Myr from now, when the interaction shell starts to
fragment. The Local Cloud and its companion HI clouds are the consequence of a dynamical
instability in the interaction shell between the Local and the Loop I bubble
Theory and Models of the Disc-Halo Connection
We review the evolution of the interstellar medium in disc galaxies, and
show, both analytically and by numerical 3D hydrodynamic simulations, that the
disc-halo connection is an essential ingredient in understanding the evolution
of star forming galaxies. Depending on the star formation rate of the
underlying gaseous disc, a galactic fountain is established. If the star
formation rate is sufficiently high and/or cosmic rays are well coupled to the
thermal plasma, a galactic wind will be formed and lead to a secular mass loss
of the galaxy. Such a wind leaves a unique imprint on the soft X-ray spectra in
edge-on galaxies, with delayed recombination being one of its distinctive
features. We argue that synthetic spectra, obtained from self-consistent
dynamical and thermal modelling of a galactic outflow, should be treated on an
equal footing as observed spectra. We show that it is thus possible to
successfully fit the spectrum of the starburst galaxy NGC 3079.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Invited review for the proceedings of "The Role

Searching singlet extensions of the supersymmetric standard model in orbifold compactification of heterotic string
We search for supersymmetric standard model realizations with extra singlets
and extra using the heterotic string compactification on the orbifold with two Wilson lines. We analyze the vacuum restabilization
mechanism for three representative Pati-Salam string models obtained in the
literature and present detailed results for the effective superpotential
compatible with the string selection rules. An automated selection of
semi-realistic vacua along flat directions in the non-Abelian singlet modes
field space is performed by requiring the presence of massless pairs of
electroweak Higgs bosons having trilinear superpotential couplings with
massless singlet modes and the decoupling of color triplet exotic modes needed
to suppress and number violating processes.Comment: revtex4 format, 21 pages, 7 tables, shortened version added

Observers and Locality in Everett Quantum Field Theory
A model for measurement in collapse-free nonrelativistic fermionic quantum
field theory is presented. In addition to local propagation and
effectively-local interactions, the model incorporates explicit representations
of localized observers, thus extending an earlier model of entanglement
generation in Everett quantum field theory [M. A. Rubin, Found. Phys. 32,
1495-1523 (2002)]. Transformations of the field operators from the Heisenberg
picture to the Deutsch-Hayden picture, involving fictitious auxiliary fields,
establish the locality of the model. The model is applied to manifestly-local
calculations of the results of measurements, using a type of sudden
approximation and in the limit of massive systems in narrow-wavepacket states.
Detection of the presence of a spin-1/2 system in a given spin state by a
freely-moving two-state observer illustrates the features of the model and the
nonperturbative computational methodology. With the help of perturbation theory
the model is applied to a calculation of the quintessential "nonlocal" quantum
phenomenon, spin correlations in the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm experiment.Comment: Some changes to introduction and discussion sections, typos

Leptogenesis and Neutrino Oscillations Within A Predictive G(224)/SO(10)-Framework
A framework based on an effective symmetry that is either G(224)= SU(2)_L x
SU(2)_R xSU(4)^c or SO(10) has been proposed (a few years ago) that
successfully describes the masses and mixings of all fermions including
neutrinos, with seven predictions, in good accord with the data. Baryogenesis
via leptogenesis is considered within this framework by allowing for natural
phases (~ 1/20-1/2) in the entries of the Dirac and Majorana mass-matrices. It
is shown that the framework leads quite naturally, for both thermal as well as
non-thermal leptogenesis, to the desired magnitude for the baryon asymmetry.
This result is obtained in full accord with the observed features of the
atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations, as well as with those of the quark
and charged lepton masses and mixings, and the gravitino-constraint. Hereby one
obtains a unified description of fermion masses, neutrino oscillations and
baryogenesis (via leptogenesis) within a single predictive framework.Comment: Efficiency factor updated, some clarifications and new references

Hamiltonian dynamics and Noether symmetries in Extended Gravity Cosmology
We discuss the Hamiltonian dynamics for cosmologies coming from Extended
Theories of Gravity. In particular, minisuperspace models are taken into
account searching for Noether symmetries. The existence of conserved quantities
gives selection rule to recover classical behaviors in cosmic evolution
according to the so called Hartle criterion, that allows to select correlated
regions in the configuration space of dynamical variables. We show that such a
statement works for general classes of Extended Theories of Gravity and is
conformally preserved. Furthermore, the presence of Noether symmetries allows a
straightforward classification of singularities that represent the points where
the symmetry is broken. Examples of nonminimally coupled and higher-order
models are discussed.Comment: 20 pages, Review paper to appear in EPJ
Measurement of (anti)deuteron and (anti)proton production in DIS at HERA
The first observation of (anti)deuterons in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
has been made with the ZEUS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 300--318 GeV
using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb-1. The measurement was performed in
the central rapidity region for transverse momentum per unit of mass in the
range 0.3<p_T/M<0.7. The particle rates have been extracted and interpreted in
terms of the coalescence model. The (anti)deuteron production yield is smaller
than the (anti)proton yield by approximately three orders of magnitude,
consistent with the world measurements.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables, submitted to Nucl. Phys.
Forward jet production in deep inelastic ep scattering and low-x parton dynamics at HERA
Differential inclusive jet cross sections in neutral current deep inelastic
ep scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector. Three phase-space
regions have been selected in order to study parton dynamics where the effects
of BFKL evolution might be present. The measurements have been compared to the
predictions of leading-logarithm parton shower Monte Carlo models and
fixed-order perturbative QCD calculations. In the forward region, QCD
calculations at order alpha_s^1 underestimate the data up to an order of
magnitude at low x. An improved description of the data in this region is
obtained by including QCD corrections at order alpha_s^2, which account for the
lowest-order t-channel gluon-exchange diagrams, highlighting the importance of
such terms in parton dynamics at low x.Comment: 25 pages, 4 figure
