    Avifauna Survey within a University Campus and Adjacent Forest Fragment in Bicol, Eastern Philippines

    With the lack of baseline information on avifauna within Bicol University and the adjacent forest fragment, this research aimed to identify bird species and compare their presence between an urbanized and forest areas. Avian diversity was documented within the Kalikasan Park and Bicol University Main Campus adjacent ecosystems, representing a forest fragment and semi-urbanized ecosystems, respectively. Bird survey was carried out through point count method. Identification was aided by existing taxonomic keys. A total of 44 species were recorded with eleven as Philippine endemics. Lonchura malacca (Chestnut Munia) and Aplonis panayensis (Asian Glossy Starling) were among the most frequently sighted. Bird species sighted was higher in the forest fragment as compared with the main campus area. The study recommends that Bicol University Main campus be transformed into an avian buffer and safe zone for the protection and conservation of these species and to provide policies to maintain high bird diversity

    Photoproduction of D±D^{*\pm} mesons associated with a leading neutron

    The photoproduction of D±(2010)D^{*\pm} (2010) mesons associated with a leading neutron has been observed with the ZEUS detector in epep collisions at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 80 pb1^{-1}. The neutron carries a large fraction, {xL>0.2x_L>0.2}, of the incoming proton beam energy and is detected at very small production angles, {θn<0.8\theta_n<0.8 mrad}, an indication of peripheral scattering. The DD^* meson is centrally produced with pseudorapidity {η1.9|\eta| 1.9 GeV}, which is large compared to the average transverse momentum of the neutron of 0.22 GeV. The ratio of neutron-tagged to inclusive DD^* production is 8.85±0.93(stat.)0.61+0.48(syst.)%8.85\pm 0.93({\rm stat.})^{+0.48}_{-0.61}({\rm syst.})\% in the photon-proton center-of-mass energy range {130<W<280130 <W<280 GeV}. The data suggest that the presence of a hard scale enhances the fraction of events with a leading neutron in the final state.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures, 2 table

    Expanding the clinical and genetic spectrum of ALPK3 variants: Phenotypes identified in pediatric cardiomyopathy patients and adults with heterozygous variants

    Introduction: Biallelic damaging variants in ALPK3, encoding alpha-protein kinase 3, cause pediatric-onset cardiomyopathy with manifestations that are incompletely defined. Methods and Results: We analyzed clinical manifestations of damaging biallelic ALPK3 variants in 19 pediatric patients, including nine previously published cases. Among these, 11 loss-of-function (LoF) variants, seven compound LoF and deleterious missense variants, and one homozygous deleterious missense variant were identified. Among 18 live-born patients, 8 exhibited neonatal dilated cardiomyopathy (44.4%; 95% CI: 21.5%-69.2%) that subsequently transitioned into ventricular hypertrophy. The majority of patients had extracardiac phenotypes, including contractures, scoliosis, cleft palate, and facial dysmorphisms. We observed no association between variant type or location, disease severity, and/or extracardiac manifestations. Myocardial histopathology showed focal cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, subendocardial fibroelastosis in patients under 4 years of age, and myofibrillar disarray in adults. Rare heterozygous ALPK3 variants were also assessed in adult-onset cardiomyopathy patients. Among 1548 Dutch patients referred for initial genetic analyses, we identified 39 individuals with rare heterozygous ALPK3 variants (2.5%; 95% CI: 1.8%-3.4%), including 26 missense and 10 LoF variants. Among 149 U.S. patients without pathogenic variants in 83 cardiomyopathy-related genes, we identified six missense and nine LoF ALPK3 variants (10.1%; 95% CI: 5.7%-16.1%). LoF ALPK3 variants were increased in comparison to matched controls (Dutch cohort, P = 1.6×10−5; U.S. cohort, P = 2.2×10−13). Conclusion: Biallelic damaging ALPK3 variants cause pediatric cardiomyopathy manifested by DCM transitioning to hypertrophy, often with poor contractile function. Additional extracardiac features occur in most patients, including musculoskeletal abnormalities and cleft palate. Heterozygous LoF ALPK3 variants are enriched in adults with cardiomyopathy and may contribute to their cardiomyopathy. Adults with ALPK3 LoF variants therefore warrant evaluations for cardiomyopathy

    Measurement of the electron energy spectrum and its moments in inclusive B -> Xe nu decays

    We report a measurement of the inclusive electron energy spectrum for semileptonic decays of B mesons in a data sample of 52 million Y(4S)-->B(B) over bar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B-meson factory at SLAC. We determine the branching fraction, first, second, and third moments of the spectrum for lower cutoffs on the electron energy between 0.6 and 1.5 GeV. We measure the partial branching fraction to be B(B-->Xenu,E-e>0.6 GeV)=[10.36+/-0.06(stat.)+/-0.23(sys.)]%

    Polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) are responsible for enhanced biological phosphate removal (EBPR) from wastewater, where they grow embedded in a matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). EPSs comprise a mixture of biopolymers like polysaccharides or (glyco)proteins. Despite previous studies, little is known about the dynamics of EPS in mixed cultures, and their production by PAOs and potential consumption by flanking microbes. EPSs are biodegradable and have been suggested to be a substrate for other organisms in the community. Studying EPS turnover can help elucidate their biosynthesis and biodegradation cycles. We analyzed the turnover of proteins and polysaccharides in the EPS of an enrichment culture of PAOs relative to the turnover of internal proteins. An anaerobic-aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) simulating EBPR conditions was operated to enrich for PAOs. After achieving a stable culture, carbon source was switched to uniformly 13C-labeled acetate. Samples were collected at the end of each aerobic phase. EPSs were extracted by alkaline treatment. 13C enrichment in proteins and sugars (after hydrolysis of polysaccharides) in the extracted EPS were measured by mass spectrometry. The average turnover rate of sugars and proteins (0.167 and 0.192 d−1 respectively) was higher than the expected value based on the solid removal rate (0.132 d−1), and no significant difference was observed between intracellular and extracellular proteins. This indicates that EPS from the PAO enriched community is not selectively degraded by flanking populations under stable EBPR process conditions. Instead, we observed general decay of biomass, which corresponds to a value of 0.048 d−1. Key Points: • Proteins showed a higher turnover rate than carbohydrates. • Turnover of EPS was similar to the turnover of intracellular proteins. • EPS is not preferentially consumed by flanking populations.</p
