A bacterial-based algorithm to simulate complex adaptive systems
Following a bacterial-based modeling approach, we want to model and analyze the impact of both decentralization and heterogeneity on group behavior and collective learning. Inspired by bacterial conjugation, we have defined an artificial society in which agents' strategies adapt to changes in resources location, allowing migration and survival in a dynamic sugarscape-like scenario. To study the impact of these variables we have simulated a scenario in which resources are limited and localized. We also have defined three constraints in genetic information processing (inhibition of plasmid conjugation, inhibition of plasmid reproduction and inhibition of plasmid mutation). Our results affirmed the hypothesis that efficiency of group adaptation to dynamic environments is better when societies are varied and distributed than when they are homogeneous and centralized
Testing gravity to second post-Newtonian order: a field-theory approach
A new, field-theory-based framework for discussing and interpreting tests of
gravity, notably at the second post-Newtonian (2PN) level, is introduced.
Contrary to previous frameworks which attempted at parametrizing any
conceivable deviation from general relativity, we focus on the best motivated
class of models, in which gravity is mediated by a tensor field together with
one or several scalar fields. The 2PN approximation of these
"tensor-multi-scalar" theories is obtained thanks to a diagrammatic expansion
which allows us to compute the Lagrangian describing the motion of N bodies. In
contrast with previous studies which had to introduce many phenomenological
parameters, we find that the 2PN deviations from general relativity can be
fully described by only two new 2PN parameters, epsilon and zeta, beyond the
usual (Eddington) 1PN parameters beta and gamma. It follows from the basic
tenets of field theory, notably the absence of negative-energy excitations,
that (beta-1), epsilon and zeta (as well as any new parameter entering higher
post-Newtonian orders) must tend to zero with (gamma-1). It is also found that
epsilon and zeta do not enter the 2PN equations of motion of light. Therefore,
light-deflection or time-delay experiments cannot probe any theoretically
motivated 2PN deviation from general relativity, but they can give a clean
access to (gamma-1), which is of greatest significance as it measures the basic
coupling strength of matter to the scalar fields. Because of the importance of
self-gravity effects in neutron stars, binary-pulsar experiments are found to
constitute a unique testing ground for the 2PN structure of gravity. A
simplified analysis of four binary pulsars already leads to significant

Sex Disparities in Arrest Outcomes for Domestic Violence
Domestic violence arrests have been historically focused on protecting women and children from abusive men. Arrest patterns continue to reflect this bias with more men arrested for domestic violence compared to women. Such potential gender variations in arrest patterns pave the way to the investigation of disparities by sex of the offender in domestic violence arrests. This study utilizes data from a quantitative dataset that includes responses by police officers who completed a specially mandated checklist after responding to a domestic dispute. The results showed that while females are arrested quite often in domestic disputes, there remains a significant difference in the arrest outcome whereby male suspects were more likely to be arrested than female suspects. Regression models further indicated differences based on sex and certain predictors of arrest, which supported sex-based rationales in arrests for domestic violence.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline

On Physical Equivalence between Nonlinear Gravity Theories
We argue that in a nonlinear gravity theory, which according to well-known
results is dynamically equivalent to a self-gravitating scalar field in General
Relativity, the true physical variables are exactly those which describe the
equivalent general-relativistic model (these variables are known as Einstein
frame). Whenever such variables cannot be defined, there are strong indications
that the original theory is unphysical. We explicitly show how to map, in the
presence of matter, the Jordan frame to the Einstein one and backwards. We
study energetics for asymptotically flat solutions. This is based on the
second-order dynamics obtained, without changing the metric, by the use of a
Helmholtz Lagrangian. We prove for a large class of these Lagrangians that the
ADM energy is positive for solutions close to flat space. The proof of this
Positive Energy Theorem relies on the existence of the Einstein frame, since in
the (Helmholtz--)Jordan frame the Dominant Energy Condition does not hold and

The Coevolution of Finance and Property Rights: Evidence from Transition Economies
The transition from communism to capitalism was necessarily accompanied by a sudden and abrupt increase in the financialization of society. This increase occurred in an environment that, even now, still has little experience with or expertise in financialization. Given that financialization occurred simultaneously with the growth and evolution of other political and economic institutions, the question arises: What was the effect on these other nascent institutions like property rights? This article empirically analyzes the relationship between financialization and property rights in transition countries. Using a unique monthly database of twenty transition countries over a period from 1989 to 2012, this article finds that the influence of financialization depends on which definition of “financialization” is used. In particular, increases in basic financial intermediation improved property rights. However, higher-order “financialization,” proxied here by the size of capital markets and the wages in the financial sector, appeared to have a negative impact on the development of broad-based property rights in transition
The Alaska Arctic Vegetation Archive (AVA-AK)
The Alaska Arctic Vegetation Archive (AVA-AK, GIVD-ID: NA-US-014) is a free, publically available database archive of vegetation-plot data from the Arctic tundra region of northern Alaska. The archive currently contains 24 datasets with 3,026 non-overlapping plots. Of these, 74% have geolocation data with 25-m or better precision. Species cover data and header data are stored in a Turboveg database. A standardized Pan Arctic Species List provides a consistent nomenclature for vascular plants, bryophytes, and lichens in the archive. A web-based online Alaska Arctic Geoecological Atlas (AGA-AK) allows viewing and downloading the species data in a variety of formats, and provides access to a wide variety of ancillary data. We conducted a preliminary cluster analysis of the first 16 datasets (1,613 plots) to examine how the spectrum of derived clusters is related to the suite of datasets, habitat types, and environmental gradients. We present the contents of the archive, assess its strengths and weaknesses, and provide three supplementary files that include the data dictionary, a list of habitat types, an overview of the datasets, and details of the cluster analysis
Viral Superantigen Drives Extrafollicular and Follicular B Cell Differentiation Leading to Virus-specific Antibody Production
Mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV[SW]) encodes a superantigen expressed by infected B cells. It evokes an antibody response specific for viral envelope protein, indicating selective activation of antigen-specific B cells. The response to MMTV(SW) in draining lymph nodes was compared with the response to haptenated chicken gamma globulin (NP-CGG) using flow cytometry and immunohistology. T cell priming occurs in both responses, with T cells proliferating in association with interdigitating dendritic cells in the T zone. T cell proliferation continues in the presence of B cells in the outer T zone, and B blasts then undergo exponential growth and differentiation into plasma cells in the medullary cords. Germinal centers develop in both responses, but those induced by MMTV(SW) appear later and are smaller. Most T cells activated in the T zone and germinal centers in the MMTV(SW) response are superantigen specific and these persist for weeks in lymph nodes draining the site MMTV(SW) injection; this contrasts with the selective loss of superantigen-specific T cells from other secondary lymphoid tissues. The results indicate that this viral superantigen, when expressed by professional antigen-presenting cells, drives extrafollicular and follicular B cell differentiation leading to virus-specific antibody production
Geodesic rewriting systems and pregroups
In this paper we study rewriting systems for groups and monoids, focusing on
situations where finite convergent systems may be difficult to find or do not
exist. We consider systems which have no length increasing rules and are
confluent and then systems in which the length reducing rules lead to
geodesics. Combining these properties we arrive at our main object of study
which we call geodesically perfect rewriting systems. We show that these are
well-behaved and convenient to use, and give several examples of classes of
groups for which they can be constructed from natural presentations. We
describe a Knuth-Bendix completion process to construct such systems, show how
they may be found with the help of Stallings' pregroups and conversely may be
