The Pew Research Center noted there are 30.1 million Hispanic adults in the United States and 14.4 million of them -- or 48 [percent] -- are women. According to recent U.S. Census Bureau estimates among immigrant Hispanic women, 57 [percent] have arrived since 1990, and from those, six-in-ten Hispanic women immigrants were born in Mexico. This paper presents narratives from four professors who currently hold adjunct and tenured positions in higher education institutions in the Midwest of the United States and who shared their experiences during the Cambio de Colores conference.Includes bibliographical reference

FUsaM: Framework for Measuring Usability Mobile Applications Based on an SPL

    Get PDF
The widespread use of mobile devices and the heterogeneity of the users involves challenges when evaluating usability of mobile applications. It is important to have methodologies and tools that enable to perform specific usability studies for this type of applications in which the context of use is constantly changing. It is necessary that usability testing are transparent to the user, usability and context data are automatically collected, the test code are not intrusive in the tested application and the tests support the variability of the devices. To achieve the above features, this article presents a framework called FUsaM (Mobile Usability Framework) which is extensible and can generate and integrate usability testing in mobile applications. The design and implementation approach is based on Software Product Line (SPL) combined with Features Oriented Programming (FOP) and Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP). A case study is also presented to prove the functionality.&nbsp

The Oglán Alto Protective Forest has an area of 3100 hectares and is dominated by Amazonian lowland and piedmont forests, which harbor great diversity of fauna and flora. However, such diversity has been poorly studied, especially insects. Here we present an inventory of the dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) for this locality. A total of 10,627 individuals, belonging to 17 genera and 65 species, were determined during 18 months of collection, in which 11 different sampling methods were used. This research presents and updated checklist and a photographic guide of the main genera and species of dung beetles identified in the study area. Large scale multifactorial likelihood quantitative analysis of BRCA1 and BRCA2 variants: An ENIGMA resource to support clinical variant classification

    Get PDF
The multifactorial likelihood analysis method has demonstrated utility for quantitative assessment of variant pathogenicity for multiple cancer syndrome genes. Independent data types currently incorporated in the model for assessing BRCA1 and BRCA2 variants include clinically calibrated prior probability of pathogenicity based on variant location and bioinformatic prediction of variant effect, co-segregation, family cancer history profile, co-occurrence with a pathogenic variant in the same gene, breast tumor pathology, and case-control information. Research and clinical data for multifactorial likelihood analysis were collated for 1,395 BRCA1/2 predominantly intronic and missense variants, enabling classification based on posterior probability of pathogenicity for 734 variants: 447 variants were classified as (likely) benign, and 94 as (likely) pathogenic; and 248 classifications were new or considerably altered relative to ClinVar submissions. Classifications were compared with information not yet included in the likelihood model, and evidence strengths aligned to those recommended for ACMG/AMP classification codes. Altered mRNA splicing or function relative to known nonpathogenic variant controls were moderately to strongly predictive of variant pathogenicity. Variant absence in population datasets provided supporting evidence for variant pathogenicity. These findings have direct relevance for BRCA1 and BRCA2 variant evaluation, and justify the need for gene-specific calibration of evidence types used for variant classification

The evolution of the ventilatory ratio is a prognostic factor in mechanically ventilated COVID-19 ARDS patients

Background: Mortality due to COVID-19 is high, especially in patients requiring mechanical ventilation. The purpose of the study is to investigate associations between mortality and variables measured during the first three days of mechanical ventilation in patients with COVID-19 intubated at ICU admission. Methods: Multicenter, observational, cohort study includes consecutive patients with COVID-19 admitted to 44 Spanish ICUs between February 25 and July 31, 2020, who required intubation at ICU admission and mechanical ventilation for more than three days. We collected demographic and clinical data prior to admission; information about clinical evolution at days 1 and 3 of mechanical ventilation; and outcomes. Results: Of the 2,095 patients with COVID-19 admitted to the ICU, 1,118 (53.3%) were intubated at day 1 and remained under mechanical ventilation at day three. From days 1 to 3, PaO2/FiO2 increased from 115.6 [80.0-171.2] to 180.0 [135.4-227.9] mmHg and the ventilatory ratio from 1.73 [1.33-2.25] to 1.96 [1.61-2.40]. In-hospital mortality was 38.7%. A higher increase between ICU admission and day 3 in the ventilatory ratio (OR 1.04 [CI 1.01-1.07], p = 0.030) and creatinine levels (OR 1.05 [CI 1.01-1.09], p = 0.005) and a lower increase in platelet counts (OR 0.96 [CI 0.93-1.00], p = 0.037) were independently associated with a higher risk of death. No association between mortality and the PaO2/FiO2 variation was observed (OR 0.99 [CI 0.95 to 1.02], p = 0.47). Conclusions: Higher ventilatory ratio and its increase at day 3 is associated with mortality in patients with COVID-19 receiving mechanical ventilation at ICU admission. No association was found in the PaO2/FiO2 variation
