    Taxonomic diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates along the Oum Er Rbia River (Morocco): implications for water quality bio-monitoring using indicator species

    The macroinvertebrates of the Oum Er Rbia River were studied from samples collected seasonally from September 2015 to September 2016 at 10 sampling sites. The macroinvertebrates found during the sampling period were distributed into twelve orders. The most abundant order was diptera, having 9618 individuals, followed by the order Ephemeroptera with 2985 individuals. Coleoptera, odonates and crustaceans represent only a small fraction of the total fauna. Hydropsyche, Chironomidae sp. and Simuliidae are numerically more inventoried. The composition and distribution of the species were directly or indirectly affected by the physicochemical variables and the quality of the habitat. Correspondence analysis results showed that habitat quality and quality of water represented species distribution patterns and species can be used as indicators to assess the quality of the Oum Er Rbia River system. Habitat management along the Oum Er Rbia river should be aimed at preserving native species, especially during the summer, when the biotope requirements are optimal. The results obtained in this study showed an alarming situation of the water quality of the Oum Er Rbia River and particularly in downstream segment. To solve this problem, we recommend the development of the wastewater discharge of Khenifra and Kasba Tadla and the purification of wastewater before it is discharged into the river

    Assessing the impact of vegetation cover dynamics on water erosion using PAP/RAC method and remote sensing in the Kharouba watershed (Central Plateau, Morocco)

    Le présent travail a pour objectif d’évaluer l’impact de la dynamique du couvert végétal forestier sur l’érosion hydrique au niveau du bassin versant de Kharouba dans le Plateau central marocain. La méthodologie adoptée repose sur l’analyse diachronique du couvert végétal entre 1986 et 2008 en se basant sur le traitement des photographies aériennes datées de 1986 et une image SPOT de 2,5 m de résolution datée de 2008. Les cartes du couvert végétal obtenues ont été utilisées pour l’élaboration des cartes des états érosifs de 1986 et 2008, en se basant sur la méthodologie proposée par PAP/CAR. Les principaux résultats de cette étude montrent qu’il y a une évolution régressive du couvert végétal. Cette régression a contribué à l’augmentation du risque de l’érosion hydrique à l’échelle du bassin versant. L’étendue des zones vulnérables à l’érosion hydrique est passée de 39 % de la surface du bassin versant en 1986 à 45% en 2008.     Deep desulphurization of gasoline and diesel fuels using non-hydrogen consuming techniques

    Abstract Desulphurization of FCC gasoline and diesel fuels has been investigated by chemical oxidation of sulphur containing compounds with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an acid catalyst such as formic acid and acetic acid, followed by extraction of the oxidized compounds using acetonitrile. Oxidative desulphurization (ODS) of diesel fuel was found to be very promising approach for the reduction of up to 92% of sulphur at low temperature (50 8C) and atmospheric pressure. The direct extraction of diesel oil without any oxidation has resulted in about 45% sulphur removal, however such direct extraction also removed other aromatic hydrocarbons and affected the yield. The ODS is not successful with FCC gasoline due to the high olefinic content that tends to react with hydrogen peroxide to form epoxides. GC–MS technique was used to identify the sulphones during the oxidation of thiophenes. This study recommends that the oxidation extraction technique be used as an additional process to the hydrodesulphurization to enable the refiners to meet the future environmental sulphur regulations. The conventional hydrodesulphurization can be used to lower the sulphur content to few hundreds ppm. Then, the oxidation/extraction approach needs to be used to go for ultra-deep desulphurization as it may provide better mean and cost effective way in order to meet the future sulphur environmental requirements. q 2006 Elsevier Ltd.     Effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on surgery for indeterminate thyroid nodules (THYCOVID): a retrospective, international, multicentre, cross-sectional study

    Background Since its outbreak in early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has diverted resources from non-urgent and elective procedures, leading to diagnosis and treatment delays, with an increased number of neoplasms at advanced stages worldwide. The aims of this study were to quantify the reduction in surgical activity for indeterminate thyroid nodules during the COVID-19 pandemic; and to evaluate whether delays in surgery led to an increased occurrence of aggressive tumours.Methods In this retrospective, international, cross-sectional study, centres were invited to participate in June 22, 2022; each centre joining the study was asked to provide data from medical records on all surgical thyroidectomies consecutively performed from Jan 1, 2019, to Dec 31, 2021. Patients with indeterminate thyroid nodules were divided into three groups according to when they underwent surgery: from Jan 1, 2019, to Feb 29, 2020 (global prepandemic phase), from March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2021 (pandemic escalation phase), and from June 1 to Dec 31, 2021 (pandemic decrease phase). The main outcomes were, for each phase, the number of surgeries for indeterminate thyroid nodules, and in patients with a postoperative diagnosis of thyroid cancers, the occurrence of tumours larger than 10 mm, extrathyroidal extension, lymph node metastases, vascular invasion, distant metastases, and tumours at high risk of structural disease recurrence. Univariate analysis was used to compare the probability of aggressive thyroid features between the first and third study phases. The study was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT05178186.Findings Data from 157 centres (n=49 countries) on 87 467 patients who underwent surgery for benign and malignant thyroid disease were collected, of whom 22 974 patients (18 052 [78 center dot 6%] female patients and 4922 [21 center dot 4%] male patients) received surgery for indeterminate thyroid nodules. We observed a significant reduction in surgery for indeterminate thyroid nodules during the pandemic escalation phase (median monthly surgeries per centre, 1 center dot 4 [IQR 0 center dot 6-3 center dot 4]) compared with the prepandemic phase (2 center dot 0 [0 center dot 9-3 center dot 7]; p<0 center dot 0001) and pandemic decrease phase (2 center dot 3 [1 center dot 0-5 center dot 0]; p<0 center dot 0001). Compared with the prepandemic phase, in the pandemic decrease phase we observed an increased occurrence of thyroid tumours larger than 10 mm (2554 [69 center dot 0%] of 3704 vs 1515 [71 center dot 5%] of 2119; OR 1 center dot 1 [95% CI 1 center dot 0-1 center dot 3]; p=0 center dot 042), lymph node metastases (343 [9 center dot 3%] vs 264 [12 center dot 5%]; OR 1 center dot 4 [1 center dot 2-1 center dot 7]; p=0 center dot 0001), and tumours at high risk of structural disease recurrence (203 [5 center dot 7%] of 3584 vs 155 [7 center dot 7%] of 2006; OR 1 center dot 4 [1 center dot 1-1 center dot 7]; p=0 center dot 0039).Interpretation Our study suggests that the reduction in surgical activity for indeterminate thyroid nodules during the COVID-19 pandemic period could have led to an increased occurrence of aggressive thyroid tumours. However, other compelling hypotheses, including increased selection of patients with aggressive malignancies during this period, should be considered. We suggest that surgery for indeterminate thyroid nodules should no longer be postponed even in future instances of pandemic escalation.Funding None.Copyright (c) 2023 Published by Elsevier Ltd.     The responses of an anaerobic microorganism, Yersinia intermedia MASE-LG-1 to individual and combined simulated Martian stresses

    The limits of life of aerobic microorganisms are well understood, but the responses of anaerobic microorganisms to individual and combined extreme stressors are less well known. Motivated by an interest in understanding the survivability of anaerobic microorganisms under Martian conditions, we investigated the responses of a new isolate, Yersinia intermedia MASE-LG-1 to individual and combined stresses associated with the Martian surface. This organism belongs to an adaptable and persistent genus of anaerobic microorganisms found in many environments worldwide. The effects of desiccation, low pressure, ionizing radiation, varying temperature, osmotic pressure, and oxidizing chemical compounds were investigated. The strain showed a high tolerance to desiccation, with a decline of survivability by four orders of magnitude during a storage time of 85 days. Exposure to X-rays resulted in dose-dependent inactivation for exposure up to 600 Gy while applied doses above 750 Gy led to complete inactivation. The effects of the combination of desiccation and irradiation were additive and the survivability was influenced by the order in which they were imposed. Ionizing irradiation and subsequent desiccation was more deleterious than vice versa. By contrast, the presence of perchlorates was not found to significantly affect the survival of the Yersinia strain after ionizing radiation. These data show that the organism has the capacity to survive and grow in physical and chemical stresses, imposed individually or in combination that are associated with Martian environment. Eventually it lost its viability showing that many of the most adaptable anaerobic organisms on Earth would be killed on Mars today
