Numerical calculation of the combinatorial entropy of partially ordered ice
Using a one-parameter case as an example, we demonstrate that multicanonical
simulations allow for accurate estimates of the residual combinatorial entropy
of partially ordered ice. For the considered case corrections to an
(approximate) analytical formula are found to be small, never exceeding 0.5%.
The method allows one as well to calculate combinatorial entropies for many

Glassy behavior induced by geometrical frustration in a hard-core lattice gas model
We introduce a hard-core lattice-gas model on generalized Bethe lattices and
investigate analytically and numerically its compaction behavior. If
compactified slowly, the system undergoes a first-order crystallization
transition. If compactified much faster, the system stays in a meta-stable
liquid state and undergoes a glass transition under further compaction. We show
that this behavior is induced by geometrical frustration which appears due to
the existence of short loops in the generalized Bethe lattices. We also compare
our results to numerical simulations of a three-dimensional analog of the

Thermodynamics of two lattice ice models in three dimensions
In a recent paper we introduced two Potts-like models in three dimensions,
which share the following properties: (A) One of the ice rules is always
fulfilled (in particular also at infinite temperature). (B) Both ice rules hold
for groundstate configurations. This allowed for an efficient calculation of
the residual entropy of ice I (ordinary ice) by means of multicanonical
simulations. Here we present the thermodynamics of these models. Despite their
similarities with Potts models, no sign of a disorder-order phase transition is

Theory of mind and emotion understanding predict moral development in early childhood
The current study utilized longitudinal data to investigate how theory of mind (ToM) and emotion understanding (EU) concurrently and prospectively predicted young children's moral reasoning and decision making. One hundred twenty-eight children were assessed on measures of ToM and EU at 3.5 and 5.5 years of age. At 5.5 years, children were also assessed on the quality of moral reasoning and decision making they used to negotiate prosocial moral dilemmas, in which the needs of a story protagonist conflict with the needs of another story character. More sophisticated EU predicted greater use of physical- and material-needs reasoning, and a more advanced ToM predicted greater use of psychological-needs reasoning. Most intriguing, ToM and EU jointly predicted greater use of higher-level acceptance-authority reasoning, which is likely a product of children's increasing appreciation for the knowledge held by trusted adults and children's desire to behave in accordance with social expectations.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/79217/1/026151009X483056.pd
Solvation model dependency of helix-coil transition in polyalanine
Helix-coil transitions in poly-alanine molecules of length 10 are studied by
multicanonical Monte Carlo simulations. The solvation effects are included by
either a distance-dependent dielectric permittivity or by a term that is
proportional to the solvent-accessible surface area of the peptide. We found a
strong dependence of the characteristics of the helix-coil transition from the

Impact of observational incompleteness on the structural properties of protein interaction networks
The observed structure of protein interaction networks is corrupted by many
false positive/negative links. This observational incompleteness is abstracted
as random link removal and a specific, experimentally motivated (spoke) link
rearrangement. Their impact on the structural properties of
gene-duplication-and-mutation network models is studied. For the degree
distribution a curve collapse is found, showing no sensitive dependence on the
link removal/rearrangement strengths and disallowing a quantitative extraction
of model parameters. The spoke link rearrangement process moves other
structural observables, like degree correlations, cluster coefficient and motif
frequencies, closer to their counterparts extracted from the yeast data. This
underlines the importance to take a precise modeling of the observational
incompleteness into account when network structure models are to be

Metropolis simulations of Met-Enkephalin with solvent-accessible area parameterizations
We investigate the solvent-accessible area method by means of Metropolis
simulations of the brain peptide Met-Enkephalin at 300. For the energy
function ECEPP/2 nine atomic solvation parameter (ASP) sets are studied. The
simulations are compared with one another, with simulations with a distance
dependent electrostatic permittivity , and with vacuum
simulations (). Parallel tempering and the biased Metropolis
techniques RM are employed and their performance is evaluated. The measured
observables include energy and dihedral probability densities (pds), integrated
autocorrelation times, and acceptance rates. Two of the ASP sets turn out to be
unsuitable for these simulations. For all other systems selected configurations
are minimized in search of the global energy minima, which are found for the
vacuum and the system, but for none of the ASP models. Other
observables show a remarkable dependence on the ASPs. In particular, we find
three ASP sets for which the autocorrelations at 300K are considerably
smaller than for vacuum simulations.Comment: 10 pages and 8 figure

Cardiac magnetic resonance findings predict increased resource utilization in elective coronary artery bypass grafting
Morbidity following CABG (coronary artery bypass grafting) is difficult to predict and leads to increased healthcare costs. We hypothesized that pre-operative CMR (cardiac magnetic resonance) findings would predict resource utilization in elective CABG. Over a 12-month period, patients requiring elective CABG were invited to undergo CMR 1 day prior to CABG. Gadolinium-enhanced CMR was performed using a trueFISP inversion recovery sequence on a 1.5 tesla scanner (Sonata; Siemens). Clinical data were collected prospectively. Admission costs were quantified based on standardized actual cost/day. Admission cost greater than the median was defined as 'increased'. Of 458 elective CABG cases, 45 (10%) underwent pre-operative CMR. Pre-operative characteristics [mean (S.D.) age, 64 (9) years, mortality (1%) and median (interquartile range) admission duration, 7 (6–8) days] were similar in patients who did or did not undergo CMR. In the patients undergoing CMR, eight (18%) and 11 (24%) patients had reduced LV (left ventricular) systolic function by CMR [LVEF (LV ejection fraction) <55%] and echocardiography respectively. LE (late enhancement) with gadolinium was detected in 17 (38%) patients. The average cost/day was 19059 ($10891–157917). CMR LVEF {OR (odds ratio), 0.93 [95% CI (confidence interval), 0.87–0.99]; P=0.03} and SV (stroke volume) index [OR 1.07 (95% CI, 1.00–1.14); P=0.02] predicted increased admission cost. CMR LVEF (P=0.08) and EuroScore tended to predict actual admission cost (P=0.09), but SV by CMR (P=0.16) and LV function by echocardiography (P=0.95) did not. In conclusion, in this exploratory investigation, pre-operative CMR findings predicted admission duration and increased admission cost in elective CABG surgery. The cost-effectiveness of CMR in risk stratification in elective CABG surgery merits prospective assessment
