Corneoscleral laceration and ocular burns caused by electronic cigarette explosions
PURPOSE: To report cases of acute globe rupture and bilateral corneal burns from electronic cigarette (EC) explosions. METHODS: Case series. RESULTS: We describe a series of patients with corneal injury caused by EC explosions. Both patients suffered bilateral corneal burns and decreased visual acuity, and one patient sustained a unilateral corneoscleral laceration with prolapsed iris tissue and hyphema. A review of the scientific literature revealed no prior reported cases of ocular injury secondary to EC explosions; however, multiple media and government agency articles describe fires and explosions involving ECs, including at least 4 with ocular injuries. CONCLUSIONS: Given these cases and the number of recent media reports, ECs pose a significant public health risk. Users should be warned regarding the possibility of severe injury, including sight-threatening ocular injuries ranging from corneal burns to full-thickness corneoscleral laceration
One- and two-photon resonant spectroscopy of hydrogen and anti-hydrogen atoms in external electric fields
The resonant spectra of hydrogen and anti-hydrogen atoms in the presence of
an external electric field are compared theoretically. It is shown that
nonresonant corrections to the transition frequency contain terms linear in the
electric field. The existence of these terms does not violate space and time
parity and leads to a difference in the resonant spectroscopic measurements for
hydrogen and anti-hydrogen atoms in an external electric field. The one-photon
1s-2p and the two-photon 1s-2s resonances are investigated
Polarized point sources in the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey: A preliminary catalog
The polarization properties of radio sources at very low frequencies (h45m–15h30m right ascension, 45°–57° declination, 570 square degrees). We have produced a catalog of 92 polarized radio sources at 150 MHz at 4.′3 resolution and 1 mJy rms sensitivity, which is the largest catalog of polarized sources at such low frequencies. We estimate a lower limit to the polarized source surface density at 150 MHz, with our resolution and sensitivity, of 1 source per 6.2 square degrees. We find that our Faraday depth measurements are in agreement with previous measurements and have significantly smaller errors. Most of our sources show significant depolarization compared to 1.4 GHz, but there is a small population of sources with low depolarization indicating that their polarized emission is highly localized in Faraday depth. We predict that an extension of this work to the full LOTSS data would detect at least 3400 polarized sources using the same methods, and probably considerably more with improved data processing
Composite excitation of Josephson phase and spin waves in Josephson junctions with ferromagnetic insulator
Coupling of Josephson-phase and spin-waves is theoretically studied in a
superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator/superconductor (S/FI/S) junction.
Electromagnetic (EM) field inside the junction and the Josephson current
coupled with spin-waves in FI are calculated by combining Maxwell and
Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations. In the S/FI/S junction, it is found that the
current-voltage (I-V) characteristic shows two resonant peaks. Voltages at the
resonant peaks are obtained as a function of the normal modes of EM field,
which indicates a composite excitation of the EM field and spin-waves in the
S/FI/S junction. We also examine another type of junction, in which a
nonmagnetic insulator (I) is located at one of interfaces between S and FI. In
such a S/I/FI/S junction, three resonant peaks appear in the I-V curve, since
the Josephson-phase couples to the EM field in the I layer.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
The s-process weak component: uncertainties due to convective overshooting
Using a new s-nucleosynthesis code, coupled with the stellar evolution code
Star2003, we performed simulations to study the impact of the convection
treatment on the s-process during core He-burning of a 25 Msun star (ZAMS mass)
with an initial metallicity of Z=0.02. Particular attention was devoted to the
impact of the extent of overshooting on the s-process efficiency. The results
show enhancements of about a factor 2-3 in s-process efficiency (measured as
the average overproduction factor of the 6 s-only nuclear species with
) with overshooting parameter values in the range
0.01-0.035, compared to results obtained with the same model but without
overshooting. The impact of these results on the p-process model based on type
