    Get PDF
The purpose of this literature review is to examine the changing role of professional development and to consider the possibility of using instructional coaching in the field of adult basic literacy instruction. One concept the literature discussed is what professional development models are beneficial for teachers of adult English Language Learners. The literature provided a deeper understanding about instructional coaching as a professional development option and how schools could utilize this model to support the instructional needs of teachers. Another idea that the literature addressed is how instructional coaching can strengthen the quality of instruction in adult education. If one goal of professional development is to strengthen the quality of instruction, then that might logically lead to an increase in students’ learning, skills, and achievement. Also, the literature led to further consideration about what instructional coaching methods would work well to support learning in adult English Language Learners. This literature review focused on instructional coaching in the context of adult English language instruction and learning because many adult basic education programs aim to provide high-quality professional development for their teachers and educational opportunities for their students

Direct force-measuring transducer used in blood pressure research

    Get PDF
Direct force measuring transducer acts as an arterial tonometer, gives a direct readout to instrumentation, and is unaffected by ambient noise. It uses a semiconductor strain gage which is deflected by pressure pulses in the artery. The deflection changes the resistance of the gage and alters the voltage reading on the associated instrumentation

In today\u27s world it\u27s easy to feel like a god. We live in an age of world-wide information gathering and speed-of-light computer processing that gives us the sense of omniscience. Our eye-in-the-sky satellite surveillance systems give us the feeling of omnipresence. The harnessing and development of nuclear power contributes to an all-powerful state of mind which seduces us into believing we are also wise enough to make the best decisions possible concerning our world. However, such does not appear to be the case, if environmental quality, use of world resources, and health of living populations are used as indicators

Court Cases, Cultural Expertise and ´Female Genital Mutilation' in Europe

    Get PDF
This chapter discusses adjudication, expertise, and cultural difference as it appears in criminal court cases concerning female genital cutting (FGM) in the EU, as reported in a 2015 comparative overview. It begins with the distinction between typical and atypical FGM cases; a distinction that connects court cases to the cultural realities of the practicing communities, suggesting that the lack of cultural knowledge can cause unnecessary suffering to families and/or individuals who wrongly undergo prosecution in alleged FGM cases. A contrario, the intervention of experts in FGM court cases could be a positive approach to assessing the legitimacy of public intervention in certain cases

The volunteer corn Roundup Ready® has been effective managed by ACCase graminicides as burndown prior to sowing soybean. However, before crop installation, there are other glyphosate-tolerant weeds in the field such as Conyza sp., Commelina sp., Ipomoea sp., Spermacoce latifolia and Richardia brasiliensis. Thus, the tank mixture of ACCase inhibitor herbicides with 2.4-D, is increasing in this segment. The present study evaluated the efficacy of Haloxyfop (GF-142) isolated and with 2.4-D (DMA 806 BR®) to volunteer corn control sprayed at different stages. One trial was conducted in field conditions with the corn RR® hybrids as DKB240PRO 2, AG8025RR2, Pioneer30F53HR and AG9045RR2 using a randomized block design in a split-plot factorial 8x2+1 with four replications. The main factor was the rate of haloxyfop GF-142 (25, 50 and 62 g a.i. ha-1) and clethodim (84 g a.i. ha-1) with or without the herbicide 2.4-D (670 g a.e. ha-1). The second factor was the application on volunteer corn stage at V5 and V7. The herbicide GR-142 at 25, 50 and 62 g a.i. ha-1, alone or with 2.4-D, was effective to control the volunteer corn plant hybrids DKB 240 PRO2, RR2 AG 8025, AG 9045 and RR2 Pioneer 30F53HR at both V5 and V7 stages. The same result was observed with the standard clethodim, alone and mixed with 2.4-D. However, the control at the V7 stage was slight slower than at the V5 stage

This article explores young people's experiences of sending and receiving sexual images and text messages (sexting) within their interpersonal relationships and the contexts in which this occurs. The article uses data from a recent Daphne funded project ‘Safeguarding teenagers' intimate relationships’ (STIR) involving a survey with 4564 young people aged between 14 and 17 in a number of schools across five countries in Europe. Findings reveal that experiences of sexting vary by country and gender. The study also found that young people who reported victimisation in their relationships were more likely to have sent a sext message than those who had not. The article points to the need for a more nuanced understanding of the varied contexts and experiences around sexting in order to better develop policy, practice and education in this area

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess intimate partner violence (IPV) among men and women from six cities in six European countries. METHODS: Four IPV types were measured in a population-based multicentre study of adults (18-64 years; n = 3,496). Sex- and city-differences in past year prevalence were examined considering victims, perpetrators or both and considering violent acts' severity and repetition. RESULTS: Male victimization of psychological aggression ranged from 48.8 % (Porto) to 71.8 % (Athens) and female victimization from 46.4 % (Budapest) to 70.5 % (Athens). Male and female victimization of sexual coercion ranged from 5.4 and 8.9 %, respectively, in Budapest to 27.1 and 25.3 % in Stuttgart. Male and female victims of physical assault ranged from 9.7 and 8.5 %, respectively, in Porto, to 31.2 and 23.1 % in Athens. Male victims of injury were 2.7 % in Östersund and 6.3 % in London and female victims were 1.4 % in Östersund and 8.5 % in Stuttgart. IPV differed significantly across cities (p < 0.05). Men and women predominantly experienced IPV as both victims and perpetrators with few significant sex-differences within cities. CONCLUSIONS: Results support the need to consider men and women as both potential victims and perpetrators when approaching IPV
