On the Photometric Accuracy of RHESSI Imaging and Spectrosocopy
We compare the photometric accuracy of spectra and images in flares observed
with the Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI)}spacecraft. We
test the accuracy of the photometry by comparing the photon fluxes obtained in
different energy ranges from the spectral-fitting software SPEX with those
fluxes contained in the images reconstructed with the Clean, MEM, MEM-Vis,
Pixon, and Forward-fit algorithms. We quantify also the background fluxes, the
fidelity of source geometries, and spatial spectra reconstructed with the five
image reconstruction algorithms. We investigate the effects of grid selection,
pixel size, field-of-view, and time intervals on the quality of image
reconstruction. The detailed parameters and statistics are provided in an
accompanying CD-ROM and web page. We find that Forward-fit, Pixon, and Clean
have a robust convergence behavior and a photometric accuracy in the order of a
few percents, while MEM does not converge optimally for large degrees of
freedom (for large field-of-views and/or small pixel sizes), and MEM-Vis
suffers in the case of time-variable sources. This comparative study documents
the current status of the RHESSI spectral and imaging software, one year after

A Self-Reference False Memory Effect in the DRM Paradigm: Evidence from Eastern and Western Samples
It is well established that processing information in relation to oneself (i.e., selfreferencing) leads to better memory for that information than processing that same information in relation to others (i.e., other-referencing). However, it is unknown whether self-referencing also leads to more false memories than other-referencing. In the current two experiments with European and East Asian samples, we presented participants the Deese-Roediger/McDermott (DRM) lists together with their own name or other people’s name (i.e., “Trump” in Experiment 1 and “Li Ming” in Experiment 2). We found consistent results across the two experiments; that is, in the self-reference condition, participants had higher true and false memory rates compared to those in the other-reference condition. Moreover, we found that selfreferencing did not exhibit superior mnemonic advantage in terms of net accuracy compared to other-referencing and neutral conditions. These findings are discussed in terms of theoretical frameworks such as spreading activation theories and the fuzzytrace theory. We propose that our results reflect the adaptive nature of memory in the sense that cognitive processes that increase mnemonic efficiency may also increase susceptibility to associative false memories
On directed interacting animals and directed percolation
We study the phase diagram of fully directed lattice animals with
nearest-neighbour interactions on the square lattice. This model comprises
several interesting ensembles (directed site and bond trees, bond animals,
strongly embeddable animals) as special cases and its collapse transition is
equivalent to a directed bond percolation threshold. Precise estimates for the
animal size exponents in the different phases and for the critical fugacities
of these special ensembles are obtained from a phenomenological renormalization
group analysis of the correlation lengths for strips of width up to n=17. The
crossover region in the vicinity of the collapse transition is analyzed in
detail and the crossover exponent is determined directly from the
singular part of the free energy. We show using scaling arguments and an exact
relation due to Dhar that is equal to the Fisher exponent

Une agriculture durable pour la sécurité alimentaire mondiale
Alors que l'on croyait que les grandes inquiétudes quant à la sécurité alimentaire mondiale appartenaient au passé, de nouvelles interrogations se font jour. Les pays en développement pourront-ils faire face à la croissance des besoins alimentaires qui accompagnera le fort accroissement de la population dans les 40 ans à venir ? L'agriculture actuellement pratiquée risque, en effet, de dégrader fortement les ressources naturelles et l'on est inquiet de constater des plafonnements de rendements dans les régions où la révolution verte a suscité beaucoup d'espoirs. Un groupe d'experts a analysé ces risques et conclu à la nécessité d'entreprendre une nouvelle révolution verte, trente ans après la première. Qualifiée de révolution doublement verte, elle devra reproduire les performances de la première et, en même temps, respecter les grandes lois de l'écologie et favoriser un développement économique et social plus équitable. Il s'agit là de l'un des grands objectifs internationaux pour la recherche agronomique futur
Ethnic differences in oral health and use of dental services:cross-sectional study using the 2009 Adult Dental Health Survey
Background
Oral health impacts on general health and quality of life, and oral diseases are the most common non-communicable diseases worldwide. Non-White ethnic groups account for an increasing proportion of the UK population. This study explores whether there are ethnic differences in oral health and whether these are explained by differences in sociodemographic or lifestyle factors, or use of dental services.
Methods
We used the Adult Dental Health Survey 2009 to conduct a cross-sectional study of the adult general population in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Ethnic groups were compared in terms of oral health, lifestyle and use of dental services. Logistic regression analyses were used to determine whether ethnic differences in fillings, extractions and missing teeth persisted after adjustment for potential sociodemographic confounders and whether they were explained by lifestyle or dental service mediators.
Results
The study comprised 10,435 (94.6 %) White, 272 (2.5 %) Indian, 165 (1.5 %) Pakistani/Bangladeshi and 187 (1.7 %) Black participants. After adjusting for confounders, South Asian participants were significantly less likely, than White, to have fillings (Indian adjusted OR 0.25, 95 % CI 0.17-0.37; Pakistani/Bangladeshi adjusted OR 0.43, 95 % CI 0.26-0.69), dental extractions (Indian adjusted OR 0.33, 95 % CI 0.23-0.47; Pakistani/Bangladeshi adjusted OR 0.41, 95 % CI 0.26-0.63), and <20 teeth (Indian adjusted OR 0.31, 95 % CI 0.16-0.59; Pakistani/Bangladeshi adjusted OR 0.22, 95 % CI 0.08-0.57). They attended the dentist less frequently and were more likely to add sugar to hot drinks, but were significantly less likely to consume sweets and cakes. Adjustment for these attenuated the differences but they remained significant. Black participants had reduced risk of all outcomes but after adjustment for lifestyle the difference in fillings was attenuated, and extractions and tooth loss became non-significant.
Conclusions
Contrary to most health inequalities, oral health was better among non-White groups, in spite of lower use of dental services. The differences could be partially explained by reported differences in dietary sugar
The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: the nature of the relative bias between galaxies of different spectral type
We present an analysis of the relative bias between early- and late-type galaxies in the Two-degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) - as defined by the η parameter of Madgwick et al., which quantifies the spectral type of galaxies in the survey. We calculate counts in cells for flux-limited samples of early- and late-type galaxies, using approximately cubical cells with sides ranging from 7 to 42 h−1 Mpc. We measure the variance of the counts in cells using the method of Efstathiou et al., which we find requires a correction for a finite volume effect equivalent to the integral constraint bias of the autocorrelation function. Using a maximum-likelihood technique we fit lognormal models to the one-point density distribution, and develop methods of dealing with biases in the recovered variances resulting from this technique. We then examine the joint density distribution function, f(δE, δL), and directly fit deterministic bias models to the joint counts in cells. We measure a linear relative bias of ≈1.3, which does not vary significantly with ℓ. A deterministic linear bias model is, however, a poor approximation to the data, especially on small scales (ℓ≤ 28h−1 Mpc) where deterministic linear bias is excluded at high significance. A power-law bias model with index b1≈ 0.75 is a significantly better fit to the data on all scales, although linear bias becomes consistent with the data for ℓ≳ 40h−1 Mp

Cerebral activations related to ballistic, stepwise interrupted and gradually modulated movements in parkinson patients
Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience impaired initiation and inhibition of movements such as difficulty to start/stop walking. At single-joint level this is accompanied by reduced inhibition of antagonist muscle activity. While normal basal ganglia (BG) contributions to motor control include selecting appropriate muscles by inhibiting others, it is unclear how PD-related changes in BG function cause impaired movement initiation and inhibition at single-joint level. To further elucidate these changes we studied 4 right-hand movement tasks with fMRI, by dissociating activations related to abrupt movement initiation, inhibition and gradual movement modulation. Initiation and inhibition were inferred from ballistic and stepwise interrupted movement, respectively, while smooth wrist circumduction enabled the assessment of gradually modulated movement. Task-related activations were compared between PD patients (N = 12) and healthy subjects (N = 18). In healthy subjects, movement initiation was characterized by antero-ventral striatum, substantia nigra (SN) and premotor activations while inhibition was dominated by subthalamic nucleus (STN) and pallidal activations, in line with the known role of these areas in simple movement. Gradual movement mainly involved antero-dorsal putamen and pallidum. Compared to healthy subjects, patients showed reduced striatal/SN and increased pallidal activation for initiation, whereas for inhibition STN activation was reduced and striatal-thalamo-cortical activation increased. For gradual movement patients showed reduced pallidal and increased thalamo-cortical activation. We conclude that PD-related changes during movement initiation fit the (rather static) model of alterations in direct and indirect BG pathways. Reduced STN activation and regional cortical increased activation in PD during inhibition and gradual movement modulation are better explained by a dynamic model that also takes into account enhanced responsiveness to external stimuli in this disease and the effects of hyper-fluctuating cortical inputs to the striatum and STN in particular
The influence of temperature on the development of Baltic Sea sprat (Sprattus sprattus) eggs and yolk sac larvae
In spring 2004 and 2005 we performed two sets of experiments with Baltic sprat (Sprattus sprattus balticus Schneider) eggs and larvae from the Bornholm Basin simulating ten different temperature scenarios. The goal of the present study was to analyse and parameterise temperature effects on the duration of developmental stages, on the timing of important ontogenetic transitions, growth during the yolk sac phase as well as on the survival success of eggs and early larval stages. Egg development and hatching showed exponential temperature dependence. No hatching was observed above 14.7°C and hatching success was significantly reduced below 3.4°C. Time to eye pigmentation, as a proxy for mouth gape opening, decreased with increasing temperatures from 17 days post hatch at 3.4°C to 7 days at 13°C whereas the larval yolk sac phase was shortened from 20 to 10 days at 3.8 and 10°C respectively. Maximum survival duration of non-fed larvae was 25 days at 6.8°C. Comparing the experimental results of Baltic sprat with existing information on sprat from the English Channel and North Sea differences were detected in egg development rate, thermal adaptation and in yolk sac depletion rate (YSDR). Sprat eggs from the English Channel showed significantly faster development and the potential to develop at temperatures higher than 14.7°C. North Sea sprat larvae were found to have a lower YSDR compared to larvae from the Baltic Sea. Identification of a gene signature for discriminating metastatic from primary melanoma using a molecular interaction network approach
Understanding the biological factors that are characteristic of metastasis in melanoma remains a key approach to improving treatment. In this study, we seek to identify a gene signature of metastatic melanoma. We configured a new network-based computational pipeline, combined with a machine learning method, to mine publicly available transcriptomic data from melanoma patient samples. Our method is unbiased and scans a genome-wide protein-protein interaction network using a novel formulation for network scoring. Using this, we identify the most influential, differentially expressed nodes in metastatic as compared to primary melanoma. We evaluated the shortlisted genes by a machine learning method to rank them by their discriminatory capacities. From this, we identified a panel of 6 genes, ALDH1A1, HSP90AB1, KIT, KRT16, SPRR3 and TMEM45B whose expression values discriminated metastatic from primary melanoma (87% classification accuracy). In an independent transcriptomic data set derived from 703 primary melanomas, we showed that all six genes were significant in predicting melanoma specific survival (MSS) in a univariate analysis, which was also consistent with AJCC staging. Further, 3 of these genes, HSP90AB1, SPRR3 and KRT16 remained significant predictors of MSS in a joint analysis (HR = 2.3, P = 0.03) although, HSP90AB1 (HR = 1.9, P = 2 × 10−4) alone remained predictive after adjusting for clinical predictors
