Confinement Effects in Antiferromagnets
Phase equilibrium in confined Ising antiferromagnets was studied as a
function of the coupling (v) and a magnetic field (h) at the surfaces, in the
presence of an external field H. The ground state properties were calculated
exactly for symmetric boundary conditions and nearest-neighbor interactions,
and a full zero-temperature phase diagram in the plane v-h was obtained for
films with symmetry-preserving surface orientations. The ground-state analysis
was extended to the H-T plane using a cluster-variation free energy. The study
of the finite-T properties (as a function of v and h) reveals the close
interdependence between the surface and finite-size effects and, together with
the ground-state phase diagram, provides an integral picture of the confinement
in anisotropic antiferromagnets with surfaces that preserve the symmetry of the

The Lattice and Simplex Structure of States on Pseudo Effect Algebras
We study states, measures, and signed measures on pseudo effect algebras with
some kind of the Riesz Decomposition Property, (RDP). We show that the set of
all Jordan signed measures is always an Abelian Dedekind complete -group.
Therefore, the state space of the pseudo effect algebra with (RDP) is either
empty or a nonempty Choquet simplex or even a Bauer simplex. This will allow
represent states on pseudo effect algebras by standard integrals
Mycotoxin occurrence in commodities, feeds and feed ingredients sourced in the Middle East and Africa
Between February and October 2009, 324 grain, feed and feed commodity samples were sourced directly at animal farms or feed production sites in Middle East and Africa and tested for the presence of A- and B-trichothecenes, zearalenone, fumonisins, aflatoxins and ochratoxin A, or for selected groups of mycotoxins only. Samples were analyzed after clean-up by immunoaffinity or solid-phase extraction followed by HPLC with derivatization where appropriate and fluorescence, UV or mass spectrometric detection. The percentage of positive samples of B-trichothecenes ranged from 0 to 87% of tested samples. The prevalence of fumonisins in the different countries was >50% in most cases. Zearalenone was present in tested commodities from all countries except three. The presence of aflatoxin in analyzed samples varied from 0 to 94%. Ochratoxin A was present in 67% of samples in Sudan and in 100% of Nigerian samples. No A-trichothecenes were found in this survey
Structural Information in Two-Dimensional Patterns: Entropy Convergence and Excess Entropy
We develop information-theoretic measures of spatial structure and pattern in
more than one dimension. As is well known, the entropy density of a
two-dimensional configuration can be efficiently and accurately estimated via a
converging sequence of conditional entropies. We show that the manner in which
these conditional entropies converge to their asymptotic value serves as a
measure of global correlation and structure for spatial systems in any
dimension. We compare and contrast entropy-convergence with mutual-information
and structure-factor techniques for quantifying and detecting spatial

Effect of maternal oxytocin on umbilical venous and arterial blood flows during physiological-based cord clamping in preterm lambs
Background Delayed umbilical cord clamping (UCC) after birth is thought to cause placental to infant blood transfusion, but the mechanisms are unknown. It has been suggested that uterine contractions force blood out of the placenta and into the infant during delayed cord clamping. We have investigated the effect of uterine contractions, induced by maternal oxytocin administration, on umbilical artery (UA) and venous (UV) blood flows before and after ventilation onset to determine whether uterine contractions cause placental transfusion in preterm lambs.Methods and findingsAt similar to 128 days of gestation, UA and UV blood flows, pulmonary arterial blood flow (PBF) and carotid arterial (CA) pressures and blood flows were measured in three groups of fetal sheep during delayed UCC; maternal oxytocin following mifepristone, mifepristone alone, and saline controls. A review of Monte Carlo simulations of polymers with PERM
In this review, we describe applications of the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth
method (PERM), a sequential Monte Carlo algorithm with resampling, to various
problems in polymer physics. PERM produces samples according to any given
prescribed weight distribution, by growing configurations step by step with
controlled bias, and correcting "bad" configurations by "population control".
The latter is implemented, in contrast to other population based algorithms
like e.g. genetic algorithms, by depth-first recursion which avoids storing all
members of the population at the same time in computer memory. The problems we
discuss all concern single polymers (with one exception), but under various
conditions: Homopolymers in good solvents and at the point, semi-stiff
polymers, polymers in confining geometries, stretched polymers undergoing a
forced globule-linear transition, star polymers, bottle brushes, lattice
animals as a model for randomly branched polymers, DNA melting, and finally --
as the only system at low temperatures, lattice heteropolymers as simple models
for protein folding. PERM is for some of these problems the method of choice,
but it can also fail. We discuss how to recognize when a result is reliable,
and we discuss also some types of bias that can be crucial in guiding the

Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using Lepton + Jets Events with Lifetime b-tagging
We present a measurement of the top quark pair () production cross
section () in collisions at TeV
using 230 pb of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab
Tevatron Collider. We select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon),
missing transverse energy, and jets in the final state. We employ
lifetime-based b-jet identification techniques to further enhance the
purity of the selected sample. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we
measure pb, in

Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using Kinematic Characteristics of Lepton + Jets Events
We present a measurement of the top quark pair ttbar production cross section
in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV using 230 pb**{-1}
of data collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We
select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon), large missing
transverse energy, and at least four jets, and extract the ttbar content of the
sample based on the kinematic characteristics of the events. For a top quark
mass of 175 GeV, we measure sigma(ttbar) = 6.7 {+1.4-1.3} (stat) {+1.6- 1.1}
(syst) +/-0.4 (lumi) pb, in good agreement with the standard model prediction.Comment: submitted to Phys.Rev.Let
Measurement of the Isolated Photon Cross Section in p-pbar Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
The cross section for the inclusive production of isolated photons has been
measured in p anti-p collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV with the D0 detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span transverse momenta 23 to 300 GeV
and have pseudorapidity |eta|<0.9. The cross section is compared with the
results from two next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The
theoretical predictions agree with the measurement within uncertainties.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys.Lett.
