    Sustainable Grazing on Saline Land in Western Australia - Multidisciplinary Research Linking Producers and Scientists

    Dryland salinity is one of the most critical environmental issues challenging Western Australian farmers. Currently 10% of the cropping zone (1.8 million ha) is salt-affected and this is predicted to increase dramatically in the next 50 years (NLWRA, 2001). Animals grazing saline pasture systems represent the most likely large-scale opportunity for economic return from saline land in the short to medium term. To date, few farmers have invested in large-scale revegetation of saline land as the economic return from grazing has not been perceived to cover costs. Furthermore other benefits of saltland pasture systems, such as biodiversity, water use and improved quality of animal products have not been quantified

    AimsTo investigate the change in glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), hypoglycaemia awareness and diabetes-related distress in people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) using FreeStyle Libre (FSL) over a 2-year follow-up period.MethodsFSL user data from U.K wide hospitals collected during routine clinical care were analysed. People living with T1D were categorised into four groups based on the duration of follow-up. Group I ( 2 years, n = 642). The t-test was used to compare the baseline and follow-up HbA1c, GOLD score (a measure of hypoglycaemia awareness) and diabetes-related distress scale (DDS score) (quality of life measure).ResultsThe study consisted of 16,834 people, with follow-up data available for 8,629 participants. The change in HbA1c, GOLD and DDS score from baseline within the follow-up sub-groups (group I vs group II vs group III vs group IV) was HbA1c (−6 vs −6 vs −4 vs −4 mmol/mol; p < 0.001) (−0.55 vs −0.55 vs −0.37 vs −0.37 %), GOLD score (−0.31 vs −0.45 vs −0.26 vs −0.42; p < 0.0001 group I, II, IV and p  0.07 group III), and DDS score(−0.59 vs −0.58 vs −0.63 vs −0.50; p < 0.001), respectively.ConclusionsIn people with T1D, FSL use resulted in a sustained improvement in HbA1c, hypoglycaemia awareness and diabetes-related distress for over two years

    Is null-point reconnection important for solar flux emergence?

    The role of null-point reconnection in a 3D numerical MHD model of solar emerging flux is investigated. The model consists of a twisted magnetic flux tube rising through a stratified convection zone and atmosphere to interact and reconnect with a horizontal overlying magnetic field in the atmosphere. Null points appear as the reconnection begins and persist throughout the rest of the emergence, where they can be found mostly in the model photosphere and transition region, forming two loose clusters on either side of the emerging flux tube. Up to 26 nulls are present at any one time, and tracking in time shows that there is a total of 305 overall, despite the initial simplicity of the magnetic field configuration. We find evidence for the reality of the nulls in terms of their methods of creation and destruction, their balance of signs, their long lifetimes, and their geometrical stability. We then show that due to the low parallel electric fields associated with the nulls, null-point reconnection is not the main type of magnetic reconnection involved in the interaction of the newly emerged flux with the overlying field. However, the large number of nulls implies that the topological structure of the magnetic field must be very complex and the importance of reconnection along separators or separatrix surfaces for flux emergence cannot be ruled out.Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures.     Language matters. Addressing the use of language in the care of people with diabetes: position statement of the English Advisory Group

    The language used by healthcare professionals can have a profound impact on how people living with diabetes, and those who care for them, experience their condition and feel about living with it day-to-day. At its best, good use of language, both verbal and written, can lower anxiety, build confidence, educate and help to improve self-care. Conversely, poor communication can be stigmatizing, hurtful and undermining of self-care and can have a detrimental effect on clinical outcomes. The language used in the care of those with diabetes has the power to reinforce negative stereotypes, but it also has the power to promote positive ones. The use of language is controversial and has many perspectives. The development of this position statement aimed to take account of these as well as the current evidence base. A working group, representing people with diabetes and key organizations with an interest in the care of people with diabetes, was established to review the use of language. The work of this group has culminated in this position statement for England. It follows the contribution of Australia and the USA to this important international debate. The group has set out practical examples of language that will encourage positive interactions with those living with diabetes and subsequently promote positive outcomes. These examples are based on a review of the evidence and are supported by a simple set of principles

    Buoyancy-induced time delays in Babcock-Leighton flux-transport dynamo models

    The Sun is a magnetic star whose cyclic activity is thought to be linked to internal dynamo mechanisms. A combination of numerical modelling with various levels of complexity is an efficient and accurate tool to investigate such intricate dynamical processes. We investigate the role of the magnetic buoyancy process in 2D Babcock-Leighton dynamo models, by modelling more accurately the surface source term for poloidal field. Methods. To do so, we reintroduce in mean-field models the results of full 3D MHD calculations of the non-linear evolution of a rising flux tube in a convective shell. More specifically, the Babcock-Leighton source term is modified to take into account the delay introduced by the rise time of the toroidal structures from the base of the convection zone to the solar surface. We find that the time delays introduced in the equations produce large temporal modulation of the cycle amplitude even when strong and thus rapidly rising flux tubes are considered. Aperiodic modulations of the solar cycle appear after a sequence of period doubling bifurcations typical of non-linear systems. The strong effects introduced even by small delays is found to be due to the dependence of the delays on the magnetic field strength at the base of the convection zone, the modulation being much less when time delays remain constant. We do not find any significant influence on the cycle period except when the delays are made artificially strong. A possible new origin of the solar cycle variability is here revealed. This modulated activity and the resulting butterfly diagram are then more compatible with observations than what the standard Babcock-Leighton model produces.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    We study the effect of photospheric footpoint motions on magnetic field structures containing magnetic nulls. The footpoint motions are prescribed on the photospheric boundary as a velocity field which entangles the magnetic field. We investigate the propagation of the injected energy, the conversion of energy, emergence of current layers and other consequences of the non-trivial magnetic field topology in this situation. These boundary motions lead initially to an increase in magnetic and kinetic energy. Following this, the energy input from the photosphere is partially dissipated and partially transported out of the domain through the Poynting flux. The presence of separatrix layers and magnetic null-points fundamentally alters the propagation behavior of disturbances from the photosphere into the corona. Depending on the field line topology close to the photosphere, the energy is either trapped or free to propagate into the corona.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figure

    Physical exercise is an important component in the management of type 1 diabetes across the lifespan. Yet, acute exercise increases the risk of dysglycaemia, and the direction of glycaemic excursions depends, to some extent, on the intensity and duration of the type of exercise. Understandably, fear of hypoglycaemia is one of the strongest barriers to incorporating exercise into daily life. Risk of hypoglycaemia during and after exercise can be lowered when insulin‐dose adjustments are made and/or additional carbohydrates are consumed. Glycaemic management during exercise has been made easier with continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitoring (isCGM) systems; however, because of the complexity of CGM and isCGM systems, both individuals with type 1 diabetes and their healthcare professionals may struggle with the interpretation of given information to maximise the technological potential for effective use around exercise (ie, before, during and after). This position statement highlights the recent advancements in CGM and isCGM technology, with a focus on the evidence base for their efficacy to sense glucose around exercise and adaptations in the use of these emerging tools, and updates the guidance for exercise in adults, children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes

    Molecular Formula Prediction for Chemical Filtering of 3D OrbiSIMS Datasets

    Modern mass spectrometry techniques produce a wealth of spectral data, and although this is an advantage in terms of the richness of the information available, the volume and complexity of data can prevent a thorough interpretation to reach useful conclusions. Application of molecular formula prediction (MFP) to produce annotated lists of ions that have been filtered by their elemental composition and considering structural double bond equivalence are widely used on high resolving power mass spectrometry datasets. However, this has not been applied to secondary ion mass spectrometry data. Here, we apply this data interpretation approach to 3D OrbiSIMS datasets, testing it for a series of increasingly complex samples. In an organic on inorganic sample, we successfully annotated the organic contaminant overlayer separately from the substrate. In a more challenging purely organic human serum sample we filtered out both proteins and lipids based on elemental compositions, 226 different lipids were identified and validated using existing databases, and we assigned amino acid sequences of abundant serum proteins including albumin, fibronectin, and transferrin. Finally, we tested the approach on depth profile data from layered carbonaceous engine deposits and annotated previously unidentified lubricating oil species. Application of an unsupervised machine learning method on filtered ions after performing MFP from this sample uniquely separated depth profiles of species, which were not observed when performing the method on the entire dataset. Overall, the chemical filtering approach using MFP has great potential in enabling full interpretation of complex 3D OrbiSIMS datasets from a plethora of material types
