    CFD modeling and performance evaluation of multipass solar air heaters

    This article investigates the impacts of flow configurations on the thermal performance of a solar heater system. Recycled aluminum cans (RACs) have been utilized as turbulators with a double pass single duct solar air collector. The CFD software of COMSOL Multiphysics V5.3a is used to model three designs: Cocurrent (model A), countercurrent (model B), and U-shape (model C). The numerical results reveal that the U-shape design offers a greater thermal performance of 5.4% and 6.5%, respectively, compared with the cocurrent and countercurrent flow models. Furthermore, an outdoor experiment is performed based on the numerical modeling of flow configurations. The experimental setup is examined for three configurations of model C, namely, solar air heater (SAH) without RAC model C-I (plain model), SAH with in-line RAC layout (model C-II), and SAH with staggered RAC layout (model C-III). We found the double pass single duct solar air collector (model C) design is in a good agreement with the experimental data, and model C-III has a better thermal efficiency of 60.2%, compared to those of model C-II, 53.1%, and model C-I, 49.4%

    Efficient implementation of mining waste regulations and future tailings related qualifications

    Tailings dams are usually operated by mining companies or consultancies with experience of tailings facilities and remain under the supervision of state mining authorities. However, the safety of tailings dams is often not the priority of mining safety legislation and may often not be considered in any great detail. Legislation applicable to tailings management facilities varies in the different EU Member States and it usually includes environmental protection legislation, waste legislation, water legislation, and construction laws. The relatively recent mining related accidents, Baia Mare/Romania in 2000 and Aznalcóllar/Spain in 1998 and the pollution they caused have attracted the attention of the public to the environmental and safety hazards of mining activities. As a response to these accidents the European Commission launched a proposal for a new directive "on the management of waste from the extractive industries" on 2.6.2003. It is believed that a common set of rules at EU level will establish a level playing field in terms of minimum administrative control and supervision in the extractive industry sector. The purpose of this paper is to present some ideas and suggestions as to how new mining regulations could be implemented and maintained

    Whilst the liver possesses the ability to repair and restore sections of damaged tissue following acute injury, prolonged exposure to engineered nanomaterials (ENM) may induce repetitive injury leading to chronic liver disease. Screening ENM cytotoxicity using 3D liver models has recently been performed, but a significant challenge has been the application of such in vitro models for evaluating ENM associated genotoxicity; a vital component of regulatory human health risk assessment. This review considers the benefits, limitations, and adaptations of specific in vitro approaches to assess DNA damage in the liver, whilst identifying critical advancements required to support a multitude of biochemical endpoints, focusing on nano(geno)toxicology (e.g., secondary genotoxicity, DNA damage, and repair following prolonged or repeated exposures)

    Theoretical Analysis of Quantum Ghost Imaging Through Turbulence

    Atmospheric turbulence generally affects the resolution and visibility of an image in long-distance imaging. In a recent quantum ghost imaging experiment [P. B. Dixon et al., Phys. Rev. A 83, 051803 (2011)], it was found that the effect of the turbulence can nevertheless be mitigated under certain conditions. This paper gives a detailed theoretical analysis to the setup and results reported in the experiment.     CFD analysis of a one-pass photovoltaic/thermal air system with and without offset strip fins

    The focus on managing PV panel temperature has undergone a remarkable development in the last two decades. Specifically, in countries with moderate weather temperature and high insolation, the problem of keeping the PV cell temperature in an optimal range has been managed by use of PV/T collectors. In this work, a single pass PV/T collector using laminar air flow has been assessed. Two PV/T collector designs are utilised, one with and one without offset strip fins. COMSOL Multiphysics v5.3a has been used for the analysis of the thermal and electrical performances. Two assumptions were implemented in order to reduce the computational time from 95 hours to 7 hours, namely ignoring radiative effects between the fins and the wall channels, and representing thin layers as 2D boundaries, whilst ensuring a high level of conformity (4%),. Monocrystalline silicon PV cells were used with a power temperature coefficient of 0.41%. A validation against work in the literature was made, showing a good consistency. The objective of this work is to verify the performance of the air PV/T collector with offset strip fins compared to an unfinned air PV/T collector. The results reveal that the use of offset strip fins has a noticeable impact on both the electrical and thermal efficiencies of the system. In addition, the maximum combined efficiency (ηC o ) for the finned PV/T system is 84.7% while the unfinned PV/T system is 51.2%

    Spin chains with dynamical lattice supersymmetry

    Spin chains with exact supersymmetry on finite one-dimensional lattices are considered. The supercharges are nilpotent operators on the lattice of dynamical nature: they change the number of sites. A local criterion for the nilpotency on periodic lattices is formulated. Any of its solutions leads to a supersymmetric spin chain. It is shown that a class of special solutions at arbitrary spin gives the lattice equivalents of the N=(2,2) superconformal minimal models. The case of spin one is investigated in detail: in particular, it is shown that the Fateev-Zamolodchikov chain and its off-critical extension admits a lattice supersymmetry for all its coupling constants. Its supersymmetry singlets are thoroughly analysed, and a relation between their components and the weighted enumeration of alternating sign matrices is conjectured.Comment: Revised version, 52 pages, 2 figure

    Identification of a novel loss-of-function PHEX mutation, Ala720Ser, in a sporadic case of adult-onset hypophosphatemic osteomalacia

    Adults presenting with sporadic hypophosphatemia and elevations in circulating fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) concentrations are usually investigated for an acquired disorder of FGF23 excess such as tumor induced osteomalacia (TIO). However, in some cases the underlying tumor is not detected, and such patients may harbor other causes of FGF23 excess. Indeed, coding-region and 3’UTR mutations of phosphate-regulating neutral endopeptidase (PHEX), which encodes a cell-surface protein that regulates circulating FGF23 concentrations, can lead to alterations in phosphate homeostasis, which are not detected until adulthood. Here, we report an adult female who presented with hypophosphatemic osteomalacia and raised serum FGF23 concentrations. The patient and her parents, who were her only first-degree relatives, had no history of rickets. The patient was thus suspected of having TIO. However, no tumor had been identified following extensive localization studies. Mutational analysis of the PHEX coding-region and 3’UTR was undertaken, and this revealed the patient to be heterozygous for a novel germline PHEX mutation (c.2158G>T; p.Ala720Ser). In vitro studies involving the expression of WT and mutant PHEX proteins in HEK293 cells demonstrated the Ala720Ser mutation to impair trafficking of PHEX, with 80% cell surface expression for WT PHEX (p<0.05). Thus, our studies have identified a pathogenic PHEX mutation in a sporadic case of adult-onset hypophosphatemic osteomalacia, and these findings highlight a role for PHEX gene analysis in some cases of suspected TIO, particularly when no tumor has been identified

    Simulation Training in U.K. General Aviation: An Undervalued Aid to Reducing Loss of Control Accidents

    Analysis of data from 1,007 U.K. general aviation (GA) accidents demonstrates the predominant cause of accidents is loss of control, exacerbated by a lack of recent flying experience. These are long-standing problems that can be targeted effectively with simulation training. Discussion on training strategies in commercial aviation reinforces the logic of introducing simulation training for the GA pilot. Conclusions drawn affirm the notion that GA safety would benefit from implementation of regulated simulation training

    An exploration of the use of simple statistics to measure consensus and stability in Delphi studies

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The criteria for stopping Delphi studies are often subjective. This study aimed to examine whether consensus and stability in the Delphi process can be ascertained by descriptive evaluation of trends in participants' views.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A three round email-based Delphi required participants (n = 12) to verify their level of agreement with 8 statements, write comments on each if they considered it necessary and rank the statements for importance. Each statement was analysed quantitatively by the percentage of agreement ratings, importance rankings and the amount of comments made for each statement, and qualitatively using thematic analysis. Importance rankings between rounds were compared by calculating Kappa values to observe trends in how the process impacts on subject's views.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Evolution of consensus was shown by increase in agreement percentages, convergence of range with standard deviations of importance ratings, and a decrease in the number of comments made. Stability was demonstrated by a trend of increasing Kappa values.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Following the original use of Delphi in social sciences, Delphi is suggested to be an effective way to gain and measure group consensus in healthcare. However, the proposed analytical process should be followed to ensure maximum validity of results in Delphi methodology for improved evidence of consensual decision-making.</p

    A secretome profile indicative of oleate-induced proliferation of HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma cells

    Increased fatty acid (FA) is often observed in highly proliferative tumors. FAs have been shown to modulate the secretion of proteins from tumor cells, contributing to tumor survival. However, the secreted factors affected by FA have not been systematically explored. Here, we found that treatment of oleate, a monounsaturated omega-9 FA, promoted the proliferation of HepG2 cells. To examine the secreted factors associated with oleate-induced cell proliferation, we performed a comprehensive secretome profiling of oleate-treated and untreated HepG2 cells. A comparison of the secretomes identified 349 differentially secreted proteins (DSPs; 145 upregulated and 192 downregulated) in oleate-treated samples, compared to untreated samples. The functional enrichment and network analyses of the DSPs revealed that the 145 upregulated secreted proteins by oleate treatment were mainly associated with cell proliferation-related processes, such as lipid metabolism, inflammatory response, and ER stress. Based on the network models of the DSPs, we selected six DSPs (MIF, THBS1, PDIA3, APOA1, FASN, and EEF2) that can represent such processes related to cell proliferation.
