The Russian Village, Urban Infrastructure Issues, and the Vertically Integrated Agriculture Model

    Get PDF
Russia’s population total has been in decline since 1992 and this is most evident in the villages of Russia. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the large farm collectives, many villages’ raison d\u27être ceased to exist. Today people continue to leave the villages for what they consider to be the better economic promise of the larger cities. There are serious societal and infrastructure issues related to the village exodus to the larger municipalities. In this paper, a vertically integrated agriculture model is examined as one step towards a more vibrant village economy. A vertically integrated model based upon potatoes is proffered, but this same model could work in many areas of agricultural production

The American Debt Crisis and the Effect on World Capital Markets

    Get PDF
This is a research of the literature concerning American sovereign debt and possible effects on world capital markets. The American sovereign debt components were analyzed in the context of their present and future implications to worldwide capital markets. The American political situation was examined with possible outcomes of governmental service reduction and/or tax increases for debt reduction. The American political situation was also examined for possible outcomes of American business tax regulatory reforms that could entice businesses to inject capital into the economy spurring possible economic growth and capital formation. Together, these findings suggest that, in the short term, the lack of political will in America concerning the sovereign debt issue will continue to have negative effects on world capital markets and long term inactivity could lead to more serious issues

Implications to the Traditional Higher Education Model in a Time of New Economic and Demographic Realities

    Get PDF
In the world’s developed countries the tendency is to a decreasing or stagnant, aging population. Traditional higher education has occurred early in life with little retraining in adulthood. The current demographic and economic realities demand a change in the role of traditional higher education as it must be more flexible and portable. Higher education must play a central role in the lifelong learning process as new technologies become available. Changes will occur with or without the approval of the established higher education hierarchy as businesses and governments demand quicker, cheaper, and better delivery methods to the current system. Technology is changing at such a rapid pace that the current higher education system must retool as well

Positivity Ratio: Predicting Sleep Outcomes Across The Adult Lifespan

    Get PDF
Although sleep has been linked to changes in positive and negative affect across the lifespan, the prediction of sleep from affect has not been explored completely. As such, the main objective of this study was to examine the association between affect and sleep across the adult lifespan, using a novel gauge of affect, the positivity ratio. Both subjective and objective assessments of sleep were used in analyses. This study was an archival analysis of data collected as a part of the Midlife in the United States Study (MIDUS-II), with participants ranging from 34 to 83 years of age. Results revealed the positivity ratio to be a significant predictor of self-reported sleep quality and global sleep, but not of objective sleep measures. Additionally, the positivity ratio was found to increase with age and appears to predict better global sleep and sleep quality across all age groups. Implications of the findings are discussed

A comparison between the current models of mid-latitude spread F and data from the Arecibo Observatory

    Get PDF
The current models of mid-latitude F sub s are studied. The assumptions and derivations of the Reid model, the Scannapieco model, and the Perkins model are presented in detail. Incoherent-scatter data of the density profiles and velocity profiles were obtained in order that the models could be evaluated on the basis of experimental data. Initial studies indicated that the Perkins model was most representative of the data from Arecibo, so a detailed comparison of the predictions of the Perkins model and the data was made. Two of four nights studied are nights with F sub s. The Perkins model is derived in a frame of reference moving with the velocity of the neutral wind; the model is transformed to the rest frame to facilitate comparison with data. Several data handling techniques are introduced. In particular, an integration interval that remains constant in length, but follows the vertical motion of the peak of the F layer is used to obtain the field integrated quantities of the Perkins model

Comparing resiliency in early and late-life bereavement.

Bereavement is the state of dealing with a significant loss (M.S. Stroebe, Hansson, Schut, & Stroebe, 2008). Although evidence suggests that there are differences in the bereavement and coping styles of older and younger adults, few studies have been done focusing solely on the differences. The lack of research on this topic merits further study. The purpose of this project was to examine the differences in negative emotions, affective complexity, and repressive coping, between bereaved younger and older adults. We hypothesized that bereaved older adults would report fewer negative emotions, have greater emotional complexity, and use repressive coping more than their younger counterparts. Participants were 51 older adults and 110 younger adults recruited throughout the Louisville community, all of who were bereaved less than a year. We compared reactions to grief in both groups by administering the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and Marlow-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (MC), among other measures. We found only partial support for differences in affective complexity, and the results supported the hypothesis that older adults would be more likely to use repressive coping. In other respects, older and younger adults appeared to respond very similarly to bereavement, which may be quite consistent across the lifespan. Future research might examine how affective complexity may be advantageous to the bereavement process, particularly for older adults

FROM SUNRISE TO SUNSET: A LIFESPAN APPROACH TO UNDERSTANDING THE MENTAL HEALTH OF A SUBSET OF AMERICAN FARMERS

    Get PDF
Prior research has indicated higher risk of suicide for farmers and identified depression and anxiety as mental health concerns, though the majority of research was conducted in the 1980s-1990s. In today’s economic, social, and political climate, farmers are exposed to situations and stressors reminiscent of the 1980s Farm Crisis. An added risk is the aging workforce of farmers, as age-related conditions can make farming even riskier. This study investigated the mental health of a subset of American farmers by exploring farm-related stressors, coping mechanisms, and mental health outcomes. Dispositional mindfulness was explored as a specific coping mechanism. Participants (N = 158) were recruited through in-person and online surveys. All participants were farmers in the United States at the time of the study, with the majority farming in the state of Kentucky (48.7%). Participants were predominantly female (55.4%), White (98.1%), married (77.1%), and multi-generation farmers (69.2%). Participants completed measures of farm stress, general stress, depressive and anxious symptoms, coping, resilience, and dispositional mindfulness. Hierarchical linear regressions and moderation analyses were used to examine study aims. Results showed that farmers in this sample experience rates of depressive symptoms 1.5 times to 4.5 times higher than the national population, as well as rates of anxiety symptoms 1.5 times higher than the national population. Results also revealed that farmers with higher levels of farm stress are at a higher risk for anxious and depressive symptomology. Age appeared to be a protective factor, as older farmers reported the lowest levels of farm stress. Being a female was associated with higher farm stress. Regarding coping, over half of farmers endorsed using “planning” as the top strategy for coping with farm-related stressors. Farmers higher in dispositional mindfulness had better mental health ratings and lower farm stress. Further results and implications of the findings are discussed
