    Encapsulated green magnetic nanoparticles for the removal of toxic Pb2+ and Cd2+ from water: Development, characterization and application

    Current research is based on an innovative approach of the fabrication of encapsulated sustainable, green, phytogenic magnetic nanoparticles (PMNPs), to inhibit the generation of secondary pollutants (Iron/Fe degrees) during water treatment applications. These novel bio-magnetic membrane capsules (BMMCs) were prepared using twostep titration gel crosslink method, with polyvinyl alcohol and sodium alginate matrix as the model encapsulating materials to eliminate potentially toxic metals (Pb2+ and Cd2+) from water. The development of BMMCs was characterized by FTIR, XRD, XPS, SEM, VSM, TGA and EDX techniques. The effects of various operating parameters, adsorbent dose, contact time, solution pH, temperature, initial concentration of metals cations and co-existing ions were studied. The hysteresis loops have illustrated an excellent super-paramagnetic nature, demonstrating the smooth encapsulation of PMNPs without losing their magnetic properties. The maximum monolayer adsorptive capacities estimated at pH 6.5 by the Langmuir isotherm model were 548 and 610.67 mg/g for Pb2+ and Cd2+, respectively. The novel BMMCs did not only control oxidation of PMNPs but also sustained the adsorptive removal over a wide range of pH (3-8), and the electrostatic interaction and ion-exchange were the core adsorption mechanisms. The BMMCs could easily be regenerated using 25% HNO3 as an eluent for successful usage in seven repeated cycles. Therefore, the BMMCs as a material can be used as an excellent sorbent or composite material to remove toxic metals Pb2+ and Cd2+, showing strong potential for improving water and wastewater treatment technologies

    Phosphorus recovery from wastewater and sludge

    Wastewater and sludge are potential resource of phosphorus (P) for fertilizer production. One method of recovering phosphorus is via chemical precipitation. In the study, phosphorus was recovered from wastewater and sludge. First, hydrolysis was carried out to release the phosphorus in the sludge by the addition of 1.0M acid (sulfuric acid) or base (sodium hydroxide) solution mixed for three hours at 200 rpm. The hydrolyzed sludge was filtered, and the pH of the solution was adjusted to 9.0. Precipitation for both wastewater and hydrolyzed sludge solution was carried out using magnesium chloride hexahydrate (MgCl2•6H2O) and ammonium chloride (NH4Cl). The mixture was stirred for an hour for crystallization. Precipitates were allowed to settle for 24 hours before it was filtered and dried in an oven at 55-58oC for 24 hours. The dried sample was grinded and characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), x-ray fluorenscence (XRF), and scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy(SEM-EDX)

    Use of thiopurines in inflammatory bowel disease : an update

    Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), once considered a disease of the Western hemisphere, has emerged as a global disease. As the disease prevalence is on a steady rise, management of IBD has come under the spotlight. 5-Aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, immunosuppressive agents and biologics are the backbone of treatment of IBD. With the advent of biologics and small molecules, the need for surgery and hospitalization has decreased. However, economic viability and acceptability is an important determinant of local prescription patterns. Nearly one-third of the patients in West receive biologics as the first/initial therapy. The scenario is different in developing countries where biologics are used only in a small proportion of patients with IBD. Increased risk of reactivation of tuberculosis and high cost of the therapy are limitations to their use. Thiopurines hence become critical for optimal management of patients with IBD in these regions. However, approximately one-third of patients are intolerant or develop adverse effects with their use. This has led to suboptimal use of thiopurines in clinical practice. This review article discusses the clinical aspects of thiopurine use in patients with IBD with the aim of optimizing their use to full therapeutic potential.Peer reviewe

    The authors write their own thoughts and business plan based on their personal experiences and researches, which they would like to implement in real action in future. The main goal of the thesis is to create a business plan to establish a fusion café bar in Helsinki, Finland. The fusion café will serve breakfast, bakeries, light snacks as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The thesis is based on the theories such as history and trend of café bar in Finland which helps the authors to understand the potential result of opening a café bar in future. Entrepreneurship gave an idea about how to open a business, important qualities an entrepreneur requires as well as the entrepreneurship opportunities in Finland. Legal issues helped to know about the methods and sources of documentation of the company profile along with the necessary instructions about Finnish labor law and regulations. The business plan in the theory part taught about the importance of creating a business plan for any company and how it is prepared in relation with business canvas model and SWOT analysis. The business canvas model demonstrated the key factors of company while SWOT analysis helped to understand the strength, weakness, opportunities and threats in compare to other companies. In the research and development part of thesis, both qualitative and quantitative methods were used in order to acquire necessary information about the interest of potential customers, managing and operating strategies. A structured interview with the restaurant manager of Nordic Kitchen was taken. The interview helped the authors to get more ideas while planning and opening a new business. Similarly, survey was conducted among several people in order to get an idea about their interest and habits on visiting café and bar, most common media to reach them and what new things they are looking for. The outcome of the thesis helped the author to get a deep understanding about how to create an effective and reliable business plan with the help of business model canvas and SWOT analysis. Interview and survey gave a broad idea about how to be an entrepreneur and what the potential customers are looking for

    A Study on removal of Methylene Blue dye by photo catalysis integrated with nanofiltration using statistical and experimental approaches

    In this work, the removal of Methylene Blue dye from the synthetic textile effluent has been investigated using a hybrid system (photocatalysis and nanofiltration). The Commercial ZnO powder was used as a catalyst in the photocatalytic operation. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the various operating parameters such as pH, catalyst loading and time duration and this optimization has enhanced the decolorization efficiencies. The results were compared and contrasted with the individual as well as the combined systems at optimized conditions. The results indicate that the photocatalysis process alone has resulted in 33% of dye decolorization and 26.5% of total organic carbon (TOC) removal, while the individual ceramic nanoflitration system has yielded 43% of decolorization and 35.03% TOC removal. About 94% of the dye were decolorized, and 70% of TOC was removed in 94.23 minutes of operation by the hybrid system at optimized initial operating conditions

    Abstract Increase in anthropogenic activities proliferated the consumption of resources such as phosphorus; and increase the adverse environmental impacts especially eutrophication on water resources such as lakes. Nutrient recovery from domestic wastewaters to produce a fertiliser has been explored to address these challenges in the context of a sustainable circular nutrient economy. Life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed to holistically assess the impacts of integrating a nutrient recovery system on wastewater and water resource management using Laguna de Bay, Philippines as the geographical boundary. The inventory was developed based on the results of the emerging nutrient recovery reactor operations and the application of the recovered fertiliser on the agricultural crops. The LCA results for the proposed scenario showed environmental benefits of about 83.6% freshwater eutrophication, 102.5% terrestrial ecotoxicity, 26.9% water consumption, 100.7% mineral resource scarcity, while the global warming potential is 95.4% higher than the baseline scenario. Results imply policy review for septage management, system optimisation, and evaluation of alternative methods of wastewater management, in terms of life cycle thinking and sustainability across the globe
