    A hallmark of human language is that we combine lexical building blocks retrieved from memory in endless new ways. This combinatorial aspect of language is referred to as unification. Here we focus on the neurobiological infrastructure for syntactic and semantic unification. Unification is characterized by a high-speed temporal profile including both prediction and integration of retrieved lexical elements. A meta-analysis of a large number of neuroimaging studies reveals a clear dorsal/ventral gradient in both left inferior frontal cortex and left posterior temporal cortex, with dorsal foci for syntactic processing and ventral foci for semantic processing. Next to core areas for unification, additional networks need to be recruited to realize language-driven communication to its full extent. One example is the Theory-of-Mind network, which enables inferences of the intended message (speaker meaning) from the coded meaning of the linguistic utterance.     Effects of E‐textbook Instructor Annotations on Learner Performance

    With additional features and increasing cost advantages, e-textbooks are becoming a viable alternative to paper textbooks. One important feature offered by enhanced e-textbooks (e-textbooks with interactive functionality) is the ability for instructors to annotate passages with additional insights. This paper describes a pilot study that examines the effects of instructor e-textbook annotations on student learning as measured by multiple-choice and open-ended test items. Fifty-two college students in a business course were randomly assigned either a paper or an electronic version of a textbook chapter. Results show that the e-textbook group outperformed the paper textbook group on the open-ended test item, while both groups performed equally on the multiple-choice subject test. These results suggest that the instructional affordances that an interactive e-textbook provides may lead to higher-level learning

    Phenomenological Implications of a Magnetic 5th Force

    A 5th force coupling to baryon number BB has been proposed to account for the correlations between the acceleration differences Δaij\Delta a_{ij} of the samples studied in the E\"{o}tv\"{o}s experiment, and the corresponding differences in the baryon-to-mass ratios Δ(B/μ)ij\Delta(B/\mu)_{ij}. To date the E\"{o}tv\"{o}s results have not been supported by modern experiments. Here we investigate the phenomenological implications of a possible magnetic analog B5\vec{\mathscr{B}}_5 of the conventional 5th force electric field, E5\vec{\mathscr{E}}_5, arising from the Earth's rotation. We demonstrate that, in the presence of couplings proportional to B5\vec{\mathscr{B}}_5, both the magnitude and direction of a possible 5th force field could be quite different from what would otherwise be expected and warrants further investigation.Comment: 31 pages, 1 figure, ws-ijmpa.cls, minor changes, final version to appear in International Journal of Modern Physics

    Theory of mind in utterance interpretation: the case from clinical pragmatics

    The cognitive basis of utterance interpretation is an area that continues to provoke intense theoretical debate among pragmatists. That utterance interpretation involves some type of mind-reading or theory of mind (ToM) is indisputable. However, theorists are divided on the exact nature of this ToM-based mechanism. In this paper, it is argued that the only type of ToM-based mechanism that can adequately represent the cognitive basis of utterance interpretation is one which reflects the rational, intentional, holistic character of interpretation. Such a ToM-based mechanism is supported on conceptual and empirical grounds. Empirical support for this view derives from the study of children and adults with pragmatic disorders. Specifically, three types of clinical case are considered. In the first case, evidence is advanced which indicates that individuals with pragmatic disorders exhibit deficits in reasoning and the use of inferences. These deficits compromise the ability of children and adults with pragmatic disorders to comply with the rational dimension of utterance interpretation

    Satisfaction and Experience with a Supervised Home-Based Real-Time Videoconferencing Telerehabilitation Exercise Program in People with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

    Telerehabilitation, consisting of supervised home-based exercise training via real-time videoconferencing, is an alternative method to deliver pulmonary rehabilitation with potential to improve access. The aims were to determine the level of satisfaction and experience of an eight-week supervised home-based telerehabilitation exercise program using real-time videoconferencing in people with COPD. Quantitative measures were the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire-8 (CSQ-8) and a purpose-designed satisfaction survey. A qualitative component was conducted using semi-structured interviews. Nineteen participants (mean (SD) age 73 (8) years, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) 60 (23) % predicted) showed a high level of satisfaction in the CSQ-8 score and 100% of participants reported a high level of satisfaction with the quality of exercise sessions delivered using real-time videoconferencing in participant satisfaction survey. Eleven participants undertook semi-structured interviews. Key themes in four areas relating to the telerehabilitation service emerged: positive virtual interaction through technology; health benefits; and satisfaction with the convenience and use of equipment. Participants were highly satisfied with the telerehabilitation exercise program delivered via videoconferencing.

    Mass transport by buoyant bubbles in galaxy clusters

    We investigate the effect of three important processes by which AGN-blown bubbles transport material: drift, wake transport and entrainment. The first of these, drift, occurs because a buoyant bubble pushes aside the adjacent material, giving rise to a net upward displacement of the fluid behind the bubble. For a spherical bubble, the mass of upwardly displaced material is roughly equal to half the mass displaced by the bubble, and should be ~ 10^{7-9} solar masses depending on the local ICM and bubble parameters. We show that in classical cool core clusters, the upward displacement by drift may be a key process in explaining the presence of filaments behind bubbles. A bubble also carries a parcel of material in a region at its rear, known as the wake. The mass of the wake is comparable to the drift mass and increases the average density of the bubble, trapping it closer to the cluster centre and reducing the amount of heating it can do during its ascent. Moreover, material dropping out of the wake will also contribute to the trailing filaments. Mass transport by the bubble wake can effectively prevent the build-up of cool material in the central galaxy, even if AGN heating does not balance ICM cooling.     A Chandra Study of Temperature Substructures in Intermediate-Redshift Galaxy Clusters

    By analyzing the gas temperature maps created from the Chandra archive data, we reveal the prevailing existence of temperature substructures on ~100 kpc scales in the central regions of nine intermediate-redshift (z~0.1) galaxy clusters, which resemble those found in the Virgo and Coma Clusters. Each substructure contains a clump of hot plasma whose temperature is about 2-3 keV higher than the environment, corresponding to an excess thermal energy of ~1E58-1E60 erg per clump. Since if there were no significant non-gravitational heating sources, these substructures would have perished in 1E8-1E9 yrs due to thermal conduction and turbulent flows, whose velocity is found to range from about 200 to 400 km/s, we conclude that the substructures cannot be created and sustained by inhomogeneous radiative cooling. We also eliminate the possibilities that the temperature substructures are caused by supernova explosions, or by the non-thermal X-ray emission due to the inverse-Comptonization of the CMB photons. By calculating the rising time of AGN-induced buoyant bubbles, we speculate that the intermittent AGN outbursts (~ 1E60 erg per burst) may have played a crucial role in the forming of the high temperature substructures.     Adrenergic gene polymorphisms and cardiovascular risk in the NHLBI-sponsored Women's Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Adrenergic gene polymorphisms are associated with cardiovascular and metabolic phenotypes. We investigated the influence of adrenergic gene polymorphisms on cardiovascular risk in women with suspected myocardial ischemia.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We genotyped 628 women referred for coronary angiography for eight polymorphisms in the α<sub>1A</sub>-, β<sub>1</sub>-, β<sub>2</sub>- and β<sub>3</sub>-adrenergic receptors (<it>ADRA1A</it>, <it>ADRB1, ADRB2</it>, <it>ADRB3</it>, respectively), and their signaling proteins, G-protein β 3 subunit (<it>GNB3</it>) and G-protein α subunit (<it>GNAS</it>). We compared the incidence of death, myocardial infarction, stroke, or heart failure between genotype groups in all women and women without obstructive coronary stenoses.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>After a median of 5.8 years of follow-up, 115 women had an event. Patients with the <it>ADRB1 </it>Gly389 polymorphism were at higher risk for the composite outcome due to higher rates of myocardial infarction (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 3.63, 95% confidence interval [95%CI] 1.17–11.28; Gly/Gly vs. Arg/Arg HR 4.14, 95%CI 0.88–19.6). The risk associated with <it>ADRB1 </it>Gly389 was limited to those without obstructive CAD (n = 400, P<sub>interaction </sub>= 0.03), albeit marginally significant in this subset (HR 1.71, 95%CI 0.91–3.19). Additionally, women without obstructive CAD carrying the <it>ADRB3 </it>Arg64 variant were at higher risk for the composite endpoint (HR 2.10, 95%CI 1.05–4.24) due to subtle increases in risk for all of the individual endpoints. No genetic associations were present in women with obstructive CAD.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In this exploratory analysis, common coding polymorphisms in the β<sub>1</sub>- and β<sub>3</sub>-adrenergic receptors increased cardiovascular risk in women referred for diagnostic angiography, and could improve risk assessment, particularly for women without evidence of obstructive CAD.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00000554.</p
