A two-axis laser boresight system for a shuttle experiment
A two-axis gimballed laser pointing mechanism is being developed for the Lidar In-space Technology Experiment (LITE) to be flown on the National Space Transportation System (NSTS) Space Shuttle in February 1993. Signal Transmission Across Tile Assemblies: 3D Static Tiles Simulate Active Self-Assembly by 2D Signal-Passing Tiles
The 2-Handed Assembly Model (2HAM) is a tile-based self-assembly model in
which, typically beginning from single tiles, arbitrarily large aggregations of
static tiles combine in pairs to form structures. The Signal-passing Tile
Assembly Model (STAM) is an extension of the 2HAM in which the tiles are
dynamically changing components which are able to alter their binding domains
as they bind together. For our first result, we demonstrate useful techniques
and transformations for converting an arbitrarily complex STAM tile set
into an STAM tile set where every tile has a constant, low amount of
complexity, in terms of the number and types of ``signals'' they can send, with
a trade off in scale factor.
Using these simplifications, we prove that for each temperature
there exists a 3D tile set in the 2HAM which is intrinsically universal for the
class of all 2D STAM systems at temperature (where the STAM does
not make use of the STAM's power of glue deactivation and assembly breaking, as
the tile components of the 2HAM are static and unable to change or break
bonds). This means that there is a single tile set in the 3D 2HAM which
can, for an arbitrarily complex STAM system , be configured with a
single input configuration which causes to exactly simulate at a scale
factor dependent upon . Furthermore, this simulation uses only two planes of
the third dimension. This implies that there exists a 3D tile set at
temperature in the 2HAM which is intrinsically universal for the class of
all 2D STAM systems at temperature . Moreover, we show that for each
temperature there exists an STAM tile set which is intrinsically
universal for the class of all 2D STAM systems at temperature ,

Extensions of tempered representations
Let be irreducible tempered representations of an affine Hecke
algebra H with positive parameters. We compute the higher extension groups
explicitly in terms of the representations of analytic
R-groups corresponding to and . The result has immediate
applications to the computation of the Euler-Poincar\'e pairing ,
the alternating sum of the dimensions of the Ext-groups. The resulting formula
for is equal to Arthur's formula for the elliptic pairing of
tempered characters in the setting of reductive p-adic groups. Our proof
applies equally well to affine Hecke algebras and to reductive groups over
non-archimedean local fields of arbitrary characteristic. This sheds new light
on the formula of Arthur and gives a new proof of Kazhdan's orthogonality

Psychotherapy Augmentation through Preconscious Priming.
OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that repeated preconscious (masked) priming of personalized positive cognitions could augment cognitive change and facilitate achievement of patients' goals following a therapy.
METHODS: Twenty social phobic patients (13 women) completed a 36-weeks study beginning by 12 weeks of group behavioral therapy. After the therapy, they received 6 weeks of preconscious priming and 6 weeks of a control procedure in a randomized cross-over design. The Priming condition involved listening twice daily with a passive attitude to a recording of individualized formulations of appropriate cognitions and attitudes masked by music. The Control condition involved listening to an indistinguishable recording where the formulations had been replaced by random numbers. Changes in social cognitions were measured by the Social Interaction Self Statements Test (SISST).
RESULTS: Patients improved following therapy. The Priming procedure was associated with increased positive cognitions and decreased negative cognitions on the SISST while the Control procedure was not. The Priming procedure induced more cognitive change when applied immediately after the group therapy.
CONCLUSION: An effect of priming was observed on social phobia related cognitions in the expected direction. This self administered addition to a therapy could be seen as an augmentation strategy
Extending the Canada-France brown Dwarfs Survey to the near-infrared: first ultracool brown dwarfs from CFBDSIR
We present the first results of the ongoing Canada-France Brown Dwarfs
Survey-InfraRed, hereafter CFBDSIR, a Near InfraRed extension to the optical
wide-field survey CFBDS. Our final objectives are to constrain ultracool
atmosphere physics by finding a statistically significant sample of objects
cooler than 650K and to explore the ultracool brown dwarf mass function
building on a well defined sample of such objects. Candidates are identified in
CFHT/WIRCam J and CFHT/MegaCam z' images using optimised psf-fitting, and we
follow them up with pointed near infrared imaging with SOFI at NTT. We finally
obtain low resolution spectroscopy of the coolest candidates to characterise
their atmospheric physics. We have so far analysed and followed up all
candidates on the first 66 square degrees of the 335 square degrees survey. We
identified 55 T-dwarfs candidates with z'-J > 3:5 and have confirmed six of
them as T-dwarfs, including 3 that are strong later-than-T8 candidates, based
on their far-red and NIR colours. We also present here the NIR spectra of one
of these ultracool dwarfs, CFBDSIR1458+1013 which confirms it as one of the
coolest brown dwarf known, possibly in the 550-600K temperature range. From the
completed survey we expect to discover 10 to 15 dwarfs later than T8, more than
doubling the known number of such objects. This will enable detailed studies of
their extreme atmospheric properties and provide a stronger statistical base
for studies of their luminosity function.Comment: A&A, Accepte
Self-assembled monolayers of bisphosphonates: Influence of side chain steric hindrance
Bisphosphonates form self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) spontaneously on stainless steel, silicon, and titanium oxidized surfaces. We used contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray reflectivity analysis to study the formation of SAMs on a model surface of ultraflat titanium (rms=0.2 nm). The results were extended to standard materials (mechanically polished titanium, stainless steel, and silicon) and showed that water-soluble bisphosphonic perfluoropolyether can easily form SAMs, with 100% surface coverage and a layer thickness of less than 3 nm. Hydrophobic (water contact angle >110° on stainless steel or titanium) and lipophobic (methylene iodide contact angle >105° on titanium) properties are discussed in terms of industrial applications
Extrasolar planets and brown dwarfs around A--F type stars. VIII. A giant planet orbiting the young star HD113337
In the frame of the search for extrasolar planets and brown dwarfs around
early-type main-sequence stars, we present the detection of a giant planet
around the young F-type star HD113337. We estimated the age of the system to be
150 +100/-50 Myr. Interestingly, an IR excess attributed to a cold debris disk
was previously detected on this star. The SOPHIE spectrograph on the 1.93m
telescope at Observatoire de Haute-Provence was used to obtain ~300 spectra
over 6 years. We used our SAFIR tool, dedicated to the spectra analysis of A
and F stars, to derive the radial velocity variations. The data reveal a 324.0
+1.7/-3.3 days period that we attribute to a giant planet with a minimum mass
of 2.83 +- 0.24 Mjup in an eccentric orbit with e=0.46 +- 0.04. A long-term
quadratic drift, that we assign to be probably of stellar origin, is
superimposed to the Keplerian solution.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Fast preparation route to high-performances textured Sr-doped Ca 3 Co 4 O 9 thermoelectric materials through precursor powder modification
This work presents a short and very efficientmethod to produce high performance textured Ca3Co4O9thermoelectric materials through initial powders modifica-tion. Microstructure has shown good grain orientation, andlow porosity while slightly lower grain sizes were obtained insamples prepared from attrition milled powders. All samplesshow the high density of around 96% of the theoretical value.These similar characteristics are reflected in, approximately,the same electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient valuesfor both types of samples. However, in spite of similar powerfactor (PF) at low temperatures, it is slightly higher at hightemperature for the attrition milled samples. On the otherhand, the processing time reduction (from 38 to 2 h) whenusing attrition milled precursors, leads to lower mechanicalproperties in these samples. All these data clearly point out tothe similar characteristics of both kinds of samples, with adrastic processing time decrease when using attrition milledprecursors, which is of the main economic importance whenconsidering their industrial production
On the generalized Davenport constant and the Noether number
Known results on the generalized Davenport constant related to zero-sum
sequences over a finite abelian group are extended to the generalized Noether
number related to the rings of polynomial invariants of an arbitrary finite
group. An improved general upper bound is given on the degrees of polynomial
invariants of a non-cyclic finite group which cut out the zero vector.Comment: 14 page
